Could it be separation anxiety? Does he have issues when you leave him other times, or is it only sleep related? Could he have an ear infection? Maybe laying down is painful?

@Foodnerd81: same. We just went through one at 14 months. I never know what causes it but it always stops as suddenly as it starts. But it sucks, so I feel for you.

@Mrs. Champagne: Glad he seems ok otherwise! Hope he works through this phase quickly!

At 3.5 months, he always cries/screams when putting down for naps, but not bedtime. If it lasts more than 10 minutes, I get him up and try the nap 30 min to an hour later. I hope this ends sometime.

@Mrs. Champagne: too late to edit but realized I wrote 28 months- she is almost 18 months. Doesn't really change anything to my point though.

We went through something similar for a few days around 10 months. We don't have a video monitor so it was hard to tell what was going on at first, but I managed to sneak in her room undetected a couple of times and realised that she was screaming as she was burrowing down in her cot and snuggling her lovey. I had thought she was standing up and screaming, but nope, she was just getting comfortable for the night - I think it was just her way of releasing excess energy before going to sleep for the night. It passed after a few days and now she is back to chatting to herself, with a little intermittent fuss here and there as she goes off to sleep. She is 11.5 months now.
