I'm having my daughter's 2nd Birthday party on Saturday after her nap at 2:30pm. I realize that a 2:30 party is past lunch, but before dinner, but I can't have a party without lots of food. So if I have appetizers out before it starts what time would you put out the rest of the food (presumably dinner)? I don't want people to be leaving before I put out everything... and I need time to put out the cake. Would you just serve all food together???

I'd serve it all together. People will eat when they're hungry! This way you don't have to worry about when to do the cake...you can do it an hour or two after the party starts.

How long is the party schedule? I'm with you in that I can't do a party without lots of food but I probably wouldn't do a full dinner for an early afternoon party. I would just go heavy on the apps and have it all out at the start so that you can bring the cake out and hour or two after it starts, depending how long the party is supposed to continue.

I think you have to put it all out together but I agree I would just do heavy appetizers. Assuming a 2 hour party, people will start leaving around 4:30. So you'd want to do the cake around 4? It would seem silly to have food out when they arrive at 2:30, set out more food at 3:30 and then do the cake at 4. Just have it all out at 2:30 and refill if needed around 3:30

If you don't put it out beforehand, no more than one hour after the party begins. My preference would be to put the food out and present the cake at the 1 hour mark.
