Anyone else use The Fresh 20?

@swurlygurl: Yes, they give you substitutions for fish - last night was shrimp and they said you could sub for chicken cut into bite-size pieces. I've found I spend so much less money just because we aren't going to the store as often and eating take-out.

@swurlygurl: I can't speak for the gluten-free plan, but I have the classic version, and there is a limited the amount of starchy carbs anyway. This week uses 4 pitas for Chicken Gyros and panko bread crumbs for quinoa cakes, but that's it for gluten (I think). The classic version usually has rice as a starch/side and pasta/bread only occasionally.

ETA: In regards to cutting your grocery bill, sometimes the meal plan will indicate a hard to buy amount meat, so you can save some money by cutting down on the portions. Like this week's list had 1.5 lbs shrimp, but I just bought a 1 lb bag. Also, sometimes it's hard for me to find the "healthier" meat option. This week's list had chicken chorizo sausage, but they only had pork (which happened to be cheaper).

@TemperanceBrennan: Lol! I love the phrase "adult toddler". He loved the chicken last night and he ate the peas (which he isn't normally a fan of) so hopefully we are off to a good start.

As for substitutions, instead of chorizo I just got regular pork sausage. Our store only had the spicy chorizo and I don't want to feed that to DS, even though he would love it I don't want to deal with the dirty diapers the next day!

@swurlygurl: last week it had instructions for a chicken substitute for the fish! I am also not strict about some of the gluten free items. Like, gluten free tomato paste. I just bought regular. It has a lot of beans and quinoa, so I'm not buying a ton of expensive gluten replacements. It's pretty basic stuff!

I"m thinking that this might be something that would be good to try. I think summer meals are a little easier since grilled meat and veggies are a standard but this will help us end the "what do you want for dinner" discussion every night and might actually allow us to eat as a family instead of feeding DS when we get home and then not starting our dinner until after we put him to bed.

@TemperanceBrennan: That is good to hear then! I don't mind eating the occasional starch, but it has almost crippled my cooking lately - I can't think of anything that doesn't involve pasta, rice, bread or tortillas - I need to branch out!

@grizz: That's good - Yeah, I just need ideas to not use pasta EVERY night. I used to be creative in the kitchen ... I think L just stole all my energy

I wish there was a Groupon RIGHT now

@swurlygurl: I just bit the bullet and did a 3 mo subscription and eat GF. I have downloaded the 3 weekly menus that were available and I would say that most meals have rice or quinoa on the side or as part of the dish. Or they include a corn tortilla. We are trying to cut down on carbs so I might just make more veggies or a salad instead of some pieces.

@MUI831: @grizz: @TemperanceBrennan: Well you guys are either good influences or bad influences! I just bought the year-long GF membership. I was going to go with Classic, but figure that the other 2 nights will involve the starchy carbs, and if I need to add more calories while BFing I can easily add in pasta or bread to bulk it up.

I'm happy other people seem to like it as much as I do!

I emailed them a few weeks ago and asked them if they would ever think of an app (I was thinking a grocery list you could check off would be awesome), and they responded and said it was in the works and would likely come out this summer. Just and FYI!

@swurlygurl: Ha! I thought the same thing. I also liked how they also have called for GF bread too. I personally like to go with foods that are naturally GF so I'm sure I'll be making some meal substitution. But on the whole, I think it's a great thing to have! Maybe it'll get me to actually continue to meal plan!

@TemperanceBrennan: An app would be SO nice and convenient.

My favorite part so far, is the leftovers! I can have real food for lunch instead of pbj + pickle + handful of goldfish!

But good grief... I need to give my basil plants some steroids or something because SO MUCH basil. I might have to go buy another plant. No big deal though... I can never have enough basil! Pesto during the winter is the best

This thread got me curious and I purchased the dairy free plan, which is just a one time 16 week plan. We started this week and I love it! I was spending SO much time meal planning. I'd like to try the gluten free plan once LO outgrows her mspi.

@swurlygurl: how are you liking the GF membership? I have to eat GF.

@MrsH: haven't done it yet! I've been busy!

  19. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@MrsH: I'm only on week 1, but so far I love it! It looks like they call for some GF options (bread, pasta, canned goods, seasonings, flour, etc), but since I'm not actually GF I just buy the normal stuff. It also looks like a lot of quinoa, which I'm fine with! Someone in a review was complaining about the call for corn tortillas fairly often since they don't like the flavor, but that's not an issue for me. You definitely need all eaters in your household to NOT be picky eaters! A lot of new recipes to mess up

Bumping to see how everyone is likening it now. I'm thinking of doing something like this. How much prep time does it take?

  22. Boheme

    papaya / 10473 posts

@Mrs. Blue: We are 8 weeks in and LOVE it! Sundays I shop for about 30 min, and I do an hour or less of prep after LO goes to bed. Monday night dinner is usually the longest, but I can have it done in 30-ish minutes. The other nights, the prep work is super minimal. One night we had a Mexicali bake that took me less than 5 minutes to put together! We are super happy with the plan, and some of the dinners are our fav meals we've ever cooked.

@Mrs. Blue: we are 3 weeks in and having a very positive experience as well! I saw it mentioned on HB in another thread, mentioned it to DH and after looking through the site we signed up for the classic meal plan. Just like @grizz said, there have already been several meals that are some of the best things we've ever cooked. We usually spent 45ish minutes at the grocery store on Sundays. My DH does almost all of the meal prep and cooking because dinner time is usually the start of my LO's witching period. He said the first meal is usually the longest, but he does a lot of chopping for Sunday/Monday meals on Sunday afternoons. It has really been the kick we needed to eat healthier. I lost 5 pounds the first week (I'm breastfeeding so I'm sure that was part of it, but still!). It has also helped use cut down on food waste because you use a lot of the same ingedients and leftovers in all the meals. Overall it's really been great, especially as people that tried meal planning but would fail after a week or two.

Just signed up after reading all these great reviews - Paypal payments makes impulse shopping way too easy! Hoping this helps us cook more healthy foods / have more variety / I hate meal planning!

I'm so jealous of all of you. I'd love this but my dh is too picky. I'm hoping if/when they run a sale I can pick it up and maybe he'll come around

  26. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@Mrs. Blue: LOVE IT! It doesn't take me any longer to shop than normal (less actually, because I KNOW what I'm buying!)
As for prep time, I don't really spend *that* much time prepping. I'm pretty comfortable in the kitchen, so I can read a recipe and prep real quick. While dinner is cooking I just read the next night's dinner and prep special things then (cook beans, rice, marinade meat, etc) - I prefer to not spend a bunch of time on Sunday prepping for the week.
(ETA: Probably spend 30 minutes on average in the kitchen. Dinner might take an hour to cook, but I don't have to be in the kitchen the whole time)

@jetsa: Yeah, it really only works for people willing to try EVERYTHING! I would also say that this meal plan has given me multiple favorite things I've ever cooked, but it's also given us a couple meals that were NOT favorites. Neither of us are too picky though, so we choke them down. And, funnily enough, we've both never hated the same meal, so the person who didn't hate it gets the leftovers.

My favorite favorite favorite part is the leftovers - I get lunch the next day! I'm having to take a couple-week break because I'm working extended hours at work so DH has to cook and can only manage spaghetti and sandwiches (seriously...), and I am SO SAD about not having lunch

@swurlygurl: We skipped this week because of the holiday/travel, and I'm pretty sad about not having leftovers! I finished off the Asian chicken lettuce cups yesterday, so today I'm on my own

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@jetsa: So sad! Grilled squash sounds delicious!
One night we had to make mint green beans - DH just looked at me like 'WTF, mint and green beans?!' Normally I wouldn't have made it, but I'm making myself try everything, and it was surprisingly really good! I would totally make it again

  30. jetsa

@swurlygurl: that does sound odd, my DH wouldn't even try it based on the name. He can be like a 2 year old if I don't know there's veggies in it I might try it he is getting better though it only took 30 years!

I am in the middle of the 3 month subscription and think it's pretty hit or miss. Maybe I'm a lot pickier than I thought but there are at least 2 meals in the week that we wouldn't eat. That probably works out ok since we probably only need it for 3-4 meals. That being said, I'm going to print them all out and have them in a book to refer to for future meal planning.

I am doing the gluten free version and haven't been too impressed with some of the meals. Plus, I feel like every week has at least 2 meals where you are supposed to doctor up a can of beans that that's not my jam.

I also think this would be better in the winter than the summer since I love just grilled meat and veggies in the summer but tend to need more ideas in the winter.

Just had our first Fresh 20 meal - Carnitas Tacos with Lime Roasted Corn, it was SO good! I loved doing the prep on Sunday so today was super easy to prepare when we got home. Hoping the rest of this week is just as good.

I'm really curious about this. My hesitation is with the vegetarian menu. We eat mostly meat-free, but we don't eat soy (so, no tofu). I'm worried that the recipes will include lots of meat-replacements like that. Anyone on the vegetarian plan and can chime in?

Also, will your toddlers also eat the meals? We feed our kid the same foods we eat, but he can't eat things like salad (too hard to chew with no molars). I don't want to have to make him separate food.

  36. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@allison: I can't speak to the vegetarian part, but L will eat all of it! I'm able to deconstruct the meals that she can't eat to put in a bowl for her (like a salad meal I would just give her the individual parts without lettuce). But, she's also not a picky eater and prefers to eat a variety of foods (good for this meal plan, BAD for quick breakfast!)

I just got the free meal plan sample for the Classic. DH is hesitant, and is very unsure about buying all this food on our grocery run tomorrow and we may not stick with it. Plus I'm incredibly picky, like eating disorder picky, so he doesn't have high hopes although I'm willing to try. At this point meal prep and eating healthy is something I want so badly but can't quite work it into my crazy life.

  39. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@Danizaur: Remember that it's enough for 4 portions, so you can cut the quantities in half if you don't want leftovers and don't have to feed a toddler!

@allison: My friend is on the vegetarian plan, and I don't recall reading any soy recipes when she posts what she's cooking in our moms group. I don't think I recall a lot of salads either... maybe one a week?

@MrsTiger: We are a week behind the current week, so I'll have that menu next week. I've seen a lot of positive reviews on it so I'm excited!
