Does anyone else use the Fresh 20 meal planning service? Meal planning/grocery shopping are a huge challenge for DH and I every week.
Pros? Cons?

I have so many questions about this service. I've been lusting after it for a while.
I'd love to hear from people that do/have use(d) it!

I do!
I use the Classic Plan. (Sorry this is really long).
Pros:
- Healthy ingredients, mostly whole foods. I'm trying to lose weight and I haven't done any special meal plan except for portion control. I lost 15 lbs in 2 months. My husband doesn't need to lose weight at all, so he just eats larger portions and is satisfied.
- Cheap membership fee. I bought it during black Friday and got half off for the year.
- We have really expanded our cooking skills. DH was awful in the kitchen, but now he can pull together a meal on his own. We also enjoy the time we spend cooking in the kitchen together. We turn on music and spend 10-20 mins (depending on the meal) hanging out and cooking. There are also plenty of times we make the meals on our own.
- There is a list of things to do ahead - marinades, chop veggies, etc. We do this on Sunday and it really helps to cut down prep time.
Cons:
- This isn't really a con for me, but if you are really picky it might be challenging to adapt. There is a wide variety of cuisines, ingredients, and flavors. The classic plan has one veggie meal (usually on Friday) one seafood dish, and one or two other proteins used in multiple recipes.
- We eat a lot of organic food, so we spend about $80-$100 a week on the food. This covers (for us) five nights of dinners for 2 adults and around 4 days of leftovers for lunch the next day.
We also buy other groceries (for breakfast, drinks, treats, "pantry items", etc.
- Sometimes 5 meals a week can be hard to make. We will often make the fifth meal to freeze. And we don't use the meal plan maybe one week every 6 weeks - if we are really busy or have plans to eat out a lot.
- It's low on carbs. There is pasta and bread every once in a while, but I LOVE bread. I'll usually bake a loaf, or buy rolls for DH to eat on the side.
Other:
- If you buy a year at a time, you get access to the archives, so if you don't love the meal plans for the week you can find another one you like more.
- I print mine out every week and file them in a binder which is essentially creating a cookbook for me for future reference.
- Most the meals are really good. There we love maybe 40% of the meals, like 50%, don't really like 10%.
Let me know if you have any specific questions!

@TemperanceBrennan: Awesome run down! Thank you! So most of the meals take 10-20 minutes to prepare? I think this will really help us because when I meal plan, I accidentally choose things that are a little too hard for my husband to prepare, and when he meal plans he has trouble thinking of variety so we eat tacos over and over

I just signed up to get a feel meal plan, too. Gotta see what they send me.
ETA: I've tried Once A Month Mom back when it was a free service. It's now a paid service, so I haven't been back. I tried it for a month, but didn't keep up on it because it was a ton of cooking for a weekend. (Like to the point that you don't want to cook for a good 2 weeks) Some of the meals were great, but some of the meals weren't. Also, most of the food was freezer meals, which filled up my freezer and sometimes didn't thaw out as planned. I created a thread about it. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/anyone-follow-once-a-month-mom
I did take the idea of making large batches of soup and freezing leftover in individual servings so we can have an assortment of freezer soups. Most soups froze really well.
I'm not sure how things have changed now that it's a paid service.

@bluestriped bee: We used to use another one, E-meals, and it was grooooooss! One of the recipes, I kid you not, was quesadillas made with whole wheat tortillas, cheese, roast beef deli meat, horseradish sauce, and mashed sweet potatoes. With au jus for dipping. Maybe that sounds good to some people, but I thought it was so weird. My husband was like "WTF is this? Cancel that meal thing." lol

@grizz: The time it takes really varies throughout the week. It seems like Thursdays are usually an easier day sometimes as short as five minutes if everything is prepped. Mondays usually take more time because you often cook a protein to use for multiple meals. I'd say that 10-25 mins is a good estimate, but sometimes more for cooking times.
DH and I have really different cooking styles - he measures everything exactly while I'll fly by the seat of my pants. He sometimes wants reassurance that things are cooked through or when he can move onto the next steps, but he's gotten a lot better at being independent.
Also, one thing I forgot to mention was that they are really aware of what's in season and plan meals accordingly. Heartier stews and comfort food in winter. Lighter, crisp meals in summer. Also, DH loves that most of the meals in the summer can be grilled outside.

@grizz: Oh, I'll have to skip on e-meals. Thanks for the heads up.

@TemperanceBrennan: I got the three sample menus and they look great! We are trying out the gluten free menu this week.

@grizz: What did you think? I'm thinking about signing up to get our meals in hand for the week. Indecision about what to eat kills us and then we eat chips and salsa.
papaya / 10473 posts
@Espion: We LOVE it! We thought the first week was pretty expensive, then we went over our receipt. What cost us a ton was that I bought more than I needed of a few things, but they will be pantry staples (quinoa, grapeseed oil, a few different vinegars) and re-stocking other items cost us too. Not Fresh 20 related. We are on the family plan and take the leftovers for lunch. We didn't like one meal out of the 5 - it was a soup with all the veggies + quinoa from the week, and it was just ok.

@grizz: Do you find in general that it saves you money? I feel like I spend a fortune on groceries, and I do a pretty good job of sticking to my Ziplist recipe shopping list. And is it definitely enough for leftovers every day? Cuz if I could stop buying lunch meat and stuff for lunches, that would cut down on our grocery bill quite a bit.

We might be trying this next. Both Blue Apron and Plated flopped in some ways. Though, I might give Blue Apron another try because their customer service was better.

@littlebug: It's too early to call for us yet, but I think it will in the long run. DH just did the shopping for this week, so I'll check with him. There is definitely enough for lunch the next day! My grocery shopping/meal planning problem was wasted food, so it's super helpful in that respect. Plus we are eating close to no processed food!

I just started my first week of fresh 20! I love that it gives you things you can prep ahead of time. My problem is that by the time I get home from work I have maybe 20 minutes before dinner needs to be on the table so LO can eat. I'm hoping this saves us a little time. And I like that I will have leftovers for lunch.
This week did seem more expensive but I did have to restock my pantry with some essentials and I needed to buy things for LOs lunch. If it keeps me from having to go to the store in the middle of the week I'll take it!

I suppose I could just look this up myself, but what's the cost of subscribing to Fresh20?
papaya / 10473 posts
@IRunForFun: I got it on sale for $30 for a year, but I think they have different price points for different lengths of time.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@IRunForFun: I just paid $18 for a 3 month subscription. The only thing that stinks is you only get access to the archives with a one-year subscription. But I want to try it out before committing. I have seen them on Groupon though.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@grizz: @KT326: Wow $18 for 3 months and $30 for a full year is a big difference! Interesting...not sure it's something I'd consider just yet, but I'm looking into meal planning more for the fall when DH is back to school and things are hectic.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@IRunForFun: Yeah, I couldn't find a coupon or discount anywhere. If I do decide to go for a whole year I will definitely be waiting until I can find a deal! In the meantime I am going to be printing all my meal plans and putting them in a binder so I have them for the future.
papaya / 10473 posts
Ok, report from the second grocery trip - this week cost $78, and it will cover our lunches and dinners for 5 days. Not too shabby!
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@grizz: Nice! I think ours for this week was around $120, but I had to buy some staples too. Hopefully next week is better for us!
pear / 1998 posts
@KT326: I first bought it for $15/three months at first. It goes on sale on Black Friday, and I upgraded to the year plan. It was $26 for the year, I think. If you still like it then, keep an eye out!
ETA: I went overboard and downloaded/printed all the archives and put them in binders. I feel like I have meal plans for the rest of my life.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: Nice! The only thing stopping me from buying a whole year is that my husband is pretty picky. I'm hoping that just by me making it he will get used to it!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
I don't, but after seeing you post about it and checking it out, I think I might have to find room in the budget for it. I figure I'll be saving money in the long run, because there won't be random ingredients in my cart.
honeydew / 7586 posts
I did my meal prep for the first week today. Holy cow! I spent almost 2 hours chopping veggies.
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@KT326: this is why I haven't bought it. Anything green and my husband isn't a fan, he's 1000 times better than he used to be but there's no way.
pear / 1998 posts
@rahlyrah: It can be a lot sometimes, but just think how much time you saved for later in the week
@jetsa: @KT326: My husband *thinks* he's picky too. He claims he doesn't like tomatoes, mustard, celery, mushrooms, any onions except white, and foods he's never eaten before (rutabaga, parsnips, etc). But he eats food I make with those ingredients all the time, he just doesn't realize it. He's like an adult toddler sometimes.
papaya / 10473 posts
@rahlyrah: The rest of the week should be a snap though! I usually have one big prep night, and the other dinners are super quick. One last week (tilapia with pineapple salsa) literally took me 3 minutes to put together, then 10 minutes in the oven

@grizz: @TemperanceBrennan: Thanks so much for posting about this - we're on week two and I've already saved way more than the $18 subscription by bringing my lunch to work. And so much less food waste and wandering aimlessly at the grocery store!! Seriously it's great.
papaya / 10473 posts
@hummusgirl: What plan are you on? We're on the gluten free plan, and we really like it!

We are on the vegetarian plan and I really like it. We definitely eat better on the weeks we are doing it (we probably skip a week every 5th week).
We have enjoyed the vast majority of the meals and it's nice to feel like I'm exposing LO to so many new tastes and foods. Without it we had fallen into a pretty big rut.
It doesn't take that long to cook. I make the majority of the meals the night before and it still tastes great.

wow, this sounds really interesting! i'm looking into it. thanks for sharing!
papaya / 10473 posts
@birdofafeather: I've been posting pics of a few of the meals on IG, so you can get an idea of what they are. Last night was a vegan night, so I was a little skeptical my husband would eat it, but he loved it! And LO loved it too, and tried several new veggies in the process.
@merriment: I love that aspect too. I never would've thought to make a vegan minestrone, or that it would be so simple to make from scratch! We have already eaten a ton of new things.
persimmon / 1233 posts
We do the classic and it's good. LO loves pasta and I like being able to give him our food (sometimes). Would love to try GF and vegetarian sometime though!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@grizz: Do you think that the gluten free plan is making you spend more money by buying 'unusual' things, as opposed to the easy pastas and breads? If I gave in and bought it, I'd be tempted by the gluten free option - but only because I'm trying to limit our pasta/bread/etc intake to make better choices (not actually concerned about gluten, but those dang carbs are too easy and tasty!!!). I'd really need this to be a cheap weekly plan though - we're trying to cut down our grocery bill.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Also, for those that use it, is it easy to make substitutions? Like if there's a fish meal, but fish is crazy expensive this week, would it be no big deal to replace the fish with a chicken breast?
