My baby just turned 9 months old and no teeth yet. Ever since he was like 2 months old, we thought he was drooling so much because he was about to get teeth, but none yet! Lately he's been grabbing at his ears a lot too (no other signs of eat infection or anything like that) which the ped said could also be a sign of teething but... nothing. Older brother got his first teeth by 7 months or so. Anyone experienced teeth coming in on the late side?

yes, this runs in my husband's family (late to come in and late to lose baby teeth) and my first two both got their first teeth at 12 months. no doctors or dentists have been concerned!

My kids and I all got teeth on the later side. No concerns from doctors or dentists here. Now that my kids are older they're very concerned about being late to lose their baby teeth. More a social status issue than a medical issue.

@nwm: @Corduroy: interesting for both of you it seems to be a family trait! Glad it hasn't been a concern. I wonder if it's an issue if the siblings seem to be different ages for first teeth...?

My son got his first tooth just after nine months! He has all of them now at almost five lol. My daughter, meanwhile, got her first at around six months.

Mine were each a bit different. My son was latest - he got just one (not the pair like usual!) at 9m and didn’t get the second until maybe 11m. But he actually lost his first tooth younger than my oldest who got hers earlier so 🤷♀️
We’ve been told late teeth is good because less exposure to bottles/nursing at night but I don’t know how true that is.

My 3 kids got their first teeth at 9 mo, 11 mo, and 8 mo, respectively. My oldest is 5.5 now and none are wiggly yet! I've heard that late teethers are late to lose baby teeth too. We'll see!

@MoonMoon: my first was around 12 months? My 2nd was 17 months and if she was still tooth-free by 18 we would've had to do bloodwork to see if there was a problem. 9 months sounds early to me!
My ped says the teeth move a lot before erupting, so signs of teething sometimes happen with no teeth to show for it.

My son had no teeth until 13 months!! FWIW, He now is way far ahead physicality, intellectually and speech-wise. There is a big range of normal, no worries!

@MrsSCB: @nwm: ok that's good to know siblings can be totally different in ages and it doesn't mean anything either way! I don't know why I assumed he'd get his tooth around the same age as his brother.
@bhbee: I've heard that too about late teeth not being bad! With our first the dentist gave me so much grief about nursing him to sleep at nights, I was clueless that breastmilk could cause cavities just like any other drink at bedtime... So if DS2 wants to take his time getting teeth, I'm ok with that!
@kayla0416: for your middle child who got teeth at 11 months old, was there a lot of teething symptoms beforehand, or pretty similar to the others?
@Clementine12: @pachamama: wow your stories make me feel better about the range of normal. Even though our Dr isn't worried, I made the mistake of searching online and that wasn't the best idea, obviously!

DS1 had his first two teeth just around his first birthday. He’s now 7 and has only lost a couple of baby teeth.
DS2 was even later - by age 2 he only had 6 teeth. By age 3 he finally had a full set. It was never flagged by his pediatrician or dentist.
It does seem to be a family trait. I’ve been told I was a late teether. -
My kids were/are both on the normal timeline, but my sister didn’t get her first tooth until 18 MONTHS!
(And mine came in at a “normal” time) She is 31, and has all of her teeth now, so no issues -
My oldest was like this. I don’t think she got her first tooth until around 11 months. Now shes 7 and has yet to lose any teeth and is so impatient. Her younger siblings both had their first teeth around 6 months.

My BIL and SIL are both dentists. When I've asked them any questions about my kids teeth (late to come in, late to come out, double rows of shark teeth), their response has always been pretty blase. There is just such a wide range of normal with teeth that professionals don't seem to worry much unless we're talking about pain, excessive wear, or cavities.
But yeah...my kids were average to late teethers, and have all been very slow to loose their teeth. My oldest, going into fourth grade now, lost her first tooth toward the end of second grade (so she was almost eight), and has only lost eight teeth at this point (going into fourth grade). My middle, going into second grade, has lost only her two front teeth (and lost them just shy of turning 7, and only then because she had big time shark-teeth going on, so we helped them along with a lot of wiggling). She's currently got four wigglies the dentist expects won't be in her mouth anymore by Christmas. The almost-five-year-old has no sign of any loose teeth, but we definitely know kids her age who have wiggly teeth or have lost a tooth already.

@PinkElephant: thank you for this! I needed a reminder about the wide range of normal. What are shark teeth? Is that when the new tooth erupts before the old tooth has fallen out?
Update: baby just turned 10 months old and the first tooth broke through about a week ago.
(And mine came in at a “normal” time) She is 31, and has all of her teeth now, so no issues
