Anyone else use The Fresh 20?

We started the trial week yesterday with scallion meatballs. YUM! But, I think that DH and I must eat larger meals than most. By the time I had set aside half for other meals this week, put away the boys' portion for dinner tonight and served us, there was nothing left! There goes my plan for having lunches each day.

Has anyone tried the lunch ebook on their website?

@bisous: I know they've done half-off yearly subscriptions the past two years for black Friday. The timing is a little off, but you could do the 3-month subscription now, cancel, then buy the year subscription at the end of November.

@TemperanceBrennan: Genius! Great idea. As long as this week continues to go well, I am going to do just that. Thanks for the tip!

@bisous: It also seems like most people (me included) take a week or two "off" the meal plan each month. So even though there is 4 months until black Friday, you could probably get by with three months of plans.

@sunshineandsushi: I am with you! My husband saw all the meatballs before I divided it into meal 1 and 3 and the right portions and he was so excited. Hahaha and then I put his actual meal on the table and his response was "that's all!?" Then DD decided she loved the meatballs. So we have one left over after I sent two to school with her for lunch.

@Danizaur: @LindsayInNY: @sunshineandsushi: @bisous: And anyone else I missed: I just saw this on Fresh 20's FB page:

"We're excited to partner with Foodie.com to bring you four weeks of Summer Meal Plans. Download the Foodie app, available on iPad or iPhone via iTunes. The Fresh 20 Summer Meal Plans are free and available now!"

It looks like 4 weeks of free meal plans?

@sunshineandsushi: @bisous: Uh, yeah, us too. Sometimes the meals are rather tiny compared to what we usually eat. However, DH and I both need to lose quite a bit of weight, so it's nice that it helps us control our portions and realize better eating habits. DH has lost 30 pounds just by watching his food intake alone!

@swurlygurl: thanks for posting about the Foodie app -- I downloaded it!

I recently bought the dairy-free plan (DD has a mild dairy intolerance so I'm staying away from it) and am doing my first week of it this week. I made chicken chili verde last night and it was pretty good! Very easy, too. I think I'll be tired of Mexican-inspired dishes after Friday, though (gotta use that cilantro)... I hope other weeks are a little more varied in flavors. I loved having a pre-made shopping list, though, it basically halved my grocery shopping time.

@bisous: How did you like the mahi mahi? We skipped tonight and pushed our days forward. T was having a bad day and needed a bath and it was hard to squeeze in dinner.

So night 2 on Fresh 20: DH was getting impatient for me to get back from the gym so in addition to making the potatoes I asked him to make, he also did the fish and used both containers of my pesto!!!! One of them was for Thursday's meal. It's the thought that counts, I know. But I still told him he has to buy store made pesto for Thursday. And he has sworn off helping me cook these meals now, haha.

Just read through this entire thread and got DH on board - we're going to give it a try! We could use some creativity in the kitchen! If anyone else is interested, right now they're having a sale. 1 year for $35 (normally $54) - http://www.thefresh20.com/100days/

Does anyone have the kosher plan? Wondering how different this is from classic.

I was brought up Kosher, but now it's more out of habit than anything. I don't usually blend milk products with meat products (no meat lasagna, for instance), and neither DH nor I eat seafood, so I figure that would at least cut out the shellfish . Thanks!

Edit: just saw that the kosher meal plan is only 16 weeks, not a subscription like some of the others. So I guess the question still applies, if anyone bought it and felt it was worth it?

@Mrs. High Heels: That's good to know, thank you. We are nearly at the end of our 12 weeks run. I think you'll like it, some meals are amazing, some less so, but in general it's nice to try so many different kinds of food and eat clean.

@Mrs. High Heels: WOAH! Thanks Mrs.DealFinderMoneySaver!
I have been contemplating buying this and was going to wait until the end of the trial week, but now I might not wait! We can try it together and then discuss where to budget it in the YNAB thread.

@StrawberryBee: I wish I had advice on the kosher menu. I do know even in the classic menu they request a lot of "kosher" products. Good luck if you try it!

@blackbird: Have you tried the trial week yet? I think it's pretty good so far.

@travelgirl1: Do you think it's worth renewing? In this first week, I already see two meals I'm iffy about but will try the other three, but that's ok because I wasn't expecting to like every single meal anyway. I like that getting the annual gives you access to the entire archives. I can just pay for this one year, and print out the archived weeks to have on rotation.

@.twist.: Lol, yes let's do it together! I think I'm going to just stick it into the grocery budget as a one time transaction of $35 - not sure yet - where do you think would be best to place it? I really like that they give you a breakdown of costs in each of the weekly meals.

@StrawberryBee: Sorry, no advice about the kosher menu. The gluten-free plan has a lot of regular type items, but they just tell you to buy the gluten-free version of that item. I wonder if that's how they went about the kosher plan too.

@.twist.: Oh forgot to mention, the deal is only for 48 hours and I think it ends today! I found it on their FB page. They called it a "secret sale".

  27. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Mrs. High Heels: Yea, I thought I'd throw it in groceries, one time payment, too. I went to the cheapest grocery store around here (Superstore) and the estimated cost was actually really close. I also took into account that it's an american site (or at least I think it is??). So I added on an extra $30.00. Their estimate was $72.00 and I came in at $76.00! I was pretty impressed.

ETA: thanks for the heads up! I just did it. Came to about $39.00 with currency conversion.

    pomegranate / 3113 posts

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks for posting that! I was going to wait until Black Friday to see if they did the half-off sale again, but figured this was good enough. I plan to download all the archived weeks that sound good, plus the coming year's worth, and then probably not renew next year. I'll just put the weeks I like on my own rotation So I think the $ is worth it!

  29. travelgirl1

    cantaloupe / 6630 posts

@Mrs. High Heels: I think for the price, it is worth it. And we often try meals we think we might not like, just to force ourselves into new tastes and honestly, some of the ones that seemed iffy on paper are best on the plate. But I have to say LO is not a fan, I usually have to adjust things for her.

@.twist.: I am impressed, our budget never comes in close! I figured American groceries must be much cheaper!

  31. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@.twist.: I haven't! I only tried the one meal. But I went ahead and bought it. For $35, I will get SOME good recipes out of it, and that's plenty for me.

@travelgirl1: haha well, my next trip might not be in line? maybe I just got lucky. I try to buy the store brand as often as possible (Superstore is President's Choice), which I do find makes a difference in cost, even if it's only slightly. Also, I had to buy other groceries too, like lunch stuff and toiletries and that came to a lot more, but I highlighted all the Fresh 20 ingredients and it was almost dead on to their estimate.

  33. travelgirl1

    cantaloupe / 6630 posts

@.twist.: Yeah we try get Presidents Choice too.... I also feel like there is always some item I can't get anywhere, like tomatinas last week, nowhere had them!!! I will have to try highlighting the Fresh 20 stuff too, maybe I'm blaming them for something that is actually my weakness for slipping tasty treat stuff into the cart

  34. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@travelgirl1: haha! what the heck are tomatinas? Some of the items are a little harder to find for sure!

  35. travelgirl1

@.twist.: Right??? That's what I was thinking!!! I used regular tomatoes and called it a day

Was it tomatillos? There was a tomatillo salsa from the meal plan a while ago, and DH and I loved it so much it is our go-to homemade salsa. I'll have to look when I get home.
