Honestly before speaking to some Bee Mamas, I had not clue a doula existed. Nor did I know about home births. I knew there were birthing houses (for woman who want to give non-hospital natural births) but in your house and a doula... nope. Had no clue.

Yes I had a doula and if you ask me, it was the best $800 baby-allocated dollars we spent. My husband still thinks otherwise, but then, he's not the one who had to be coached through pushing a watermelon out a hole the size of a straw.

Absolutely! I may be biased though, as I'm currently in school to get my doula certification myself.

I had a hospital birth attended by two midwives and an OB. I didn't need one, but had the birth not been attended by midwives, I would have gotten one.

I am absolutely hiring one for the birth of my next child... I intended on pain management through epidural and it all went terribly awry (3 failures). I believe most insurance covers a portion of the doula fee. You can call your company and ask.

I don't think so, unfortunately I have worked with most of the doulas in my city through working in NICU and they all really annoyed me at some point (and now they are all banned from the NICU for the inappropriate suggestions that they felt it their role to make). In my hospital we work really closely with LDR and Maternity though, so I am more than comfortable with the environment and staff.
