Looking for a doula in the Boston area for July... I've gotten several excellent recommendations, but they're for experienced doulas that charge at least a grand. I'm totally willing to help someone who is just starting out and would charge less by hiring them for our delivery... I'm not planning on a completely natural childbirth, just looking for someone who can help me get as far along as I can.

Contact DONA and they will give you a full list of certified doulas in your area, especially ones in training that need births and will work for free or at a very discounted rate.

You've probably already found a doula by now, but I had to give a shout-out to the doula I used in December 2011: http://www.happydoula.com/
Keela was my doula, but I've met her partner Brett and she's great too. They are on the North Shore, but I'm pretty sure they take clients in Boston. It was $800 which is steep, but Keela is also a certified massage therapist and that was huge when I was in labor. I think I would have paid $800 just for her to massage my feet.

I have tentatively reserved a doula student for a very low rate, but I'm seriously considering "upgrading" to an experienced doula instead because I do want those services like massage therapy during labor. I'm going to contact her to see if she's got availability around my due date. Thanks again!!!

@mrs. wagon: If I had thought of using a doula student, I probably would have done that! Deciding to spend another $800 was NOT an easy decision. But I'm really glad we used Keela. She was super laid back, without being too (pardon the expression) hippy-dippy.
I was also worried the hospital would look at me funny when I told them I was using a doula, but I think they are used to it in the Boston area. Also, I think the nurses were glad because it means they have to do a lot less and I had someone else to bug with a lot of my questions!

@mrs. wagon: Where did you find a doula student? I am also in Boston and just starting to think about this. My husband definitely won't go for it if it's super expensive.

@skipra: I emailed the DONA website and asked for a list, and emailed everyone in my area asking the questions listed on the website and their rate. I interviewed whoever was under $400 and available for my date. It was actually pretty easy to find someone! I think I interviewed 3 all together.

@pointybird: that's exactly my hope... not hippy-dippy (I'm not anti-natural so will probably get some sort of pain meds at some point), and not having to bug nurses with crazy questions and requests so they can do their job!!

@mrs. wagon: I wanted to TRY for a natural childbirth, but I was very clear that if I asked for drugs, I should get drugs! The doula was very supportive and wasn't judgmental at all.
