A very belated thanks to everyone for all the good wishes! I am trying to distract myself from some of the "concerns" by looking at cute baby boy clothes (since one of the few things we will actually need to buy this time around).

Congrats to all the other mamas with good scans/gender reveals the last couple of days! It's hard to believe we are hitting the halfway mark!

@kayakgirl73: We haven't made much progress on names either. Hoping that now we know it's a boy, we can focus in more! We are also going to be transitioning my daughter to a big girl bed/update her room in the next few weeks, I think. I am a little nervous about it but definitely think she needs as much time as possible to transition before the baby comes. I don't think we are going to get a double stroller-- they will be 3 years apart and we hardly ever use our stroller with DD at this point anyway.

@raspberries: So sorry about your dog-- that is just awful. I can only imagine how hard that must be.

Thanks ladies! I've already scheduled my 24wk appt. with a recommended practice. Its 3 Doc's who all share, but as I only want a female doc I will only see 2 of them. Hope they are nice!

I can't wait to see how the second half of the month baby sexes are, and if we even out!

Just realized I haven't booked a birthing class, and all the ones I want start week after next! Gah! Thankfully there are still spots open, but I texted DH that we are booking this *tonight* so I don't forget again. It's something that's really important to me, so I'd be really upset if we missed our window.

Also, I haven't heard back from that doula I wanted, despite having sent a couple of emails. I decided to try one more time, because she really does seem perfect. So I messaged her on FB through their page, in addition to sending one more email. And she got back to me very promptly! She said she had replied and hadn't heard back from me, and didn't want to seem pushy. I'm not sure how an email from her could have gotten lost, but I'm willing to accept that, and we're setting up a meeting very soon! Things are getting real over here!

@Mrs. Microscope: Congrats on the baby girl!!! That does stink about the doctor though! A similar thing happened to me with my first. Around 30 weeks he told me he was cutting back and would no longer be delivering but that he could still care for me pre and postnatally or he could refer me to someone else. I decided to mull it over and while I was thinking about it he called back and said never mind, I'm going to continue delivering past your due date so you're ok. Frustrating to have to find someone new when you had your mind made up!

DH and I may have decided to not stay team green this time! We feel like we want to experience it both ways just in case we decide not to have a 3rd so we'll see. I'll get my doctor to write it on a note next week and we'll go from there.

My OB clinic just called with some bad news. They did not want to wait until my Monday appointment to spring it on me.

I have complete placenta previa, so I'm pretty much guaranteed to have a C-section. I didn't want to have a C-section, and certainly did not do much reading up on it. I was hoping to have as natural a birth as possible. Also, now I have to Google placenta previa. And everyone knows that Googling medical terms is such a great idea. Anyway …

My pregnancy will also be considered a higher risk pregnancy. I'm straddling the line between upset and numb right now, but I’m not freaking out because I’m trying to think of this as logically as possible. DH is at work, so I don't want to spring the news on him until he gets home. There’s no point in him stressing out about it while he’s there.

Also, since I am having a C-section, I need to reconsider having my mother come stay with us for a few weeks. Originally I didn't want her to come, partially because it would have been a package deal with my dad and he's super stressful to be around. I've talked to my dad again pretty recently, and he said he wouldn't mind having my mom fly here by herself to stay with me for a bit. (I know he would mind, but he’s saying he doesn’t mind.) It's a looooong flight with at least one layover (NJ to Okinawa), so I also worry about my mom making that trek alone. Do I really need her to be here for support and helping out after the C-section? Will she be more of a hindrance than anything? DH is in the military, so he’ll only have 10 days of paternity leave unless he uses some leave days (which I’m not exactly sure how many he has left). Gah! What to do?! Any advice?

@Mizhi: My friend had placenta previa. She's due in May and apparently, it's common for the placenta to move off your cervix at some point. Hers was persistent, though, so she scheduled a c-section for 36 weeks in April. Well, at her 30 week appointment, her placenta had finally moved. So don't give up hope just yet!

If you do have a c-section, I promise it's not the worst thing ever, especially if it's a scheduled one. My first was a scheduled c-section and honestly, it was a breeze. The worst part was getting the spinal tap because it mentally freaked me out. My recovery was not awful either. I'm having a repeat this time and I'm little nervous only because I'll have a toddler at home and I won't be able to lift him and he'll be too young to understand (20 months).

As for your mom, you know her personality best. My mom drives me nuts sometimes, but I was glad to have her because that first week can be pretty rough. My DH went back to work when LO was 5 days old and you're still sore/can't drive at that point. It's nice to have someone bring you baby and help you in and out of bed.

Hugs!! I know this can be overwhelming. Hopefully, you won't need a c-section at all, but if you do, they really aren't terrible. But I'm opting for another vs a VBAC, so I'm a little more scared of the other way

@Mizhi: Coming from a previous c-section mama, mine was a total breeze. I know every person is different but I wouldn't have needed my mom. Although I did have her around for 2 weeks because she is local, she cleaned my house which was awesome but didn't actually help me with baby care too much. She kinda was there in case I needed her and made herself busy cleaning the place for me (and let's face it, she just wanted the extra time around her grand baby!). Will your husband be home with you for any length of time?

I know that having previa is concerning in general, but I think you're in good hands! Hugs to you

@Mizhi: I don't have any advice but only hugs! hopefully it moves out of the way in time!

@Mizhi: my first was also a non-emergent c-section (failure to progress during an induction), and I am thankful that my inlaws were around to help (my mom came later due to a family emergency). My husband took about a week off, but it was nice having the extra hands to hold the baby if I needed a shower and my husband was out. Was it absolutely necessary? No. But it was really nice. Because you don't have another child to chase after (if I'm recalling correctly) you won't need help with that, but the more you can rest while people do things like, grab a burp rag, diaper, etc the faster you will recover.

  18. MrsADS

    nectarine / 2262 posts

@Mitzhi hugs!! At my u/s they said I had "low lying placenta", which isn't previa (where it covers the cervix) but it's too close to the cervix (mine was 1.2 cm away) and I think I read anything less than 2-3 cm from the cervix will need a c-section.

My doctor told me it's VERY common for the placenta to migrate up as the baby grows, so I hope that is the case for you as well!!

@MrsADS: Congrats!! That is the best news

@mizhi: I don't have much advice as this will be my first, but my mom is planning to come stay with us for the first few weeks. I'm a little nervous about it because my husband is also taking the two months off and they don't get along super well. But it means a lot to my mom since she lives far away - Atlanta, while we are just south of Seattle - and this is her first grandchild. We have a big enough house to have her stay, and I know she will be a lot of help with cleaning and cooking and babysitting a bit. It might be annoying at times to have her around, but it's important to me to have her involved at least! We'll see - fingers crossed!

Hi everyone! I've had the busiest week ever. Too many replies on too many pages to tag everyone- I'm sorry!

SO excited to see everyone finding out gender (except the team green types of course!) - we are having a boy explosion in my family so it's interesting to see so many girls on here!

I'm also sad to see so many bees having "issues" pop up during the anatomy scan! Hope all our results/follow ups will be positive like @MrsADS: were!

And raspberries (can't tag because it's on the other page) - I am so sorry about your dog. It's never easy to lose a pet and having it happen so suddenly and tragically is only harder. My heart has been heavy for you since I read that.

I have my anatomy scan scheduled for a week from today on my birthday. Which now, I'm nervous about after reading all this! But it's the only day we could do it where DH could come. We had our NT scan with DD1 on my birthday two years ago... crazy how time flies.

I also think I MAY be feeling some kicks. It's like I've gone from 60% sure, to 70% sure, etc. Now I'm 90%+ sure. So I guess seeing myself get more sure and them get more noticible, would mean they probably are kicks! I'm yearning for the real ones. It is one of the maybe 3 things I like about being pregnant!

Name game time! DH and I are trying to decide between these two:

    Penelope Danielle
    Veronica Danielle

Last name is super common, starts with M. The middle name is mine as well, and is the female version of my mother's maiden name.

which do you like and why? Thanks for the opinions!

  22. LauraBear

    cherry / 215 posts

@Mrs. Microscope: I love the nicknames for Penelope, but I prefer the actual name Veronica - I think it's a prettier, more professional name and would work better from childhood through adulthood. It also has some cute nicknames, like Vivi? Veronica is also less popular nowadays. Both sound great with Danielle! Just my 2 cents!

  23. Mrs. J

@Mrs. Microscope: I like Penelope better. I would never associate Vivi with Veronica (more like Ronnie, which I don't like). I think Vivian with Vivi.

@Mrs. Microscope: love Penelope! I also like Veronica, but like Penelope better. In fact, it would be a too contender for me, but my husband doesn't like it.

@Mrs. J: @mrs. microscope: I wouldn't have normally thought Vivi would be a nickname for Veronica but my good friend's daughter's name is Veronica and goes by Vivi. I do tend to associate Ronnie with Veronica because of the Archie comics, but I don't think that has to be the only nickname.

So I just got a wisdom tooth pulled today. Pretty awesome at 5 months pregnant I must say When I went to the dentist a few months ago, they said the top ones were about to come through (I don't have bottom ones). For the past week, my mouth has been killing me, so I assumed that's what it was. My mouth is tiny and they said I'd probably want it out pretty soon after it came through. I called the dentist office this morning to ask if they could check it out this afternoon and they were all "Yeah the doctor said he could take it out today if you're in the second trimester." Yikes, wasn't exactly prepared for that but I'm glad it's over now. I may feel differently when the numbness wears off

@lilteacherbee: oof! I hope they hooked you up with some baby-safe pain meds! No straws for about a week, but be sure to enjoy lots of milkshakes by spoon. Are they going to take the other one out soon too?

@LauraBear: @OhCaptain: @Mrs. J: @MrsStar: @lilteacherbee: thanks! DH and I love both names, but actually want to limit nicknames. I don't know, we aren't nickname people! I am leaning towards Penelope, DH wants to stay neutral until we see her. I am sure I am going to flip flop my choice until that moment, haha!

Thanks everyone for their replies! I'm more at peace with a C-section now, and Dh and I have decided against having my mom stay with us (for now). Hopefully the doctor will be able to clarify things more on Monday at my OB appointment and tell me my odds of the placenta migrating enough to try for a vaginal birth.

@Mrs. Microscope: I prefer Penelope, too. It sounds more refreshing to me than Veronica.

@Mizhi: Glad you're feeling better about the c-section and I hope that placenta moves for you! My first birth didn't go as planned either and I ended up with an unexpected c-section after my son wouldn't fit through my pelvic bone. The recovery wasn't fun but it wasn't horrible either. We had a constant stream of family staying with us for the first few weeks and I was definitely thankful for that, but mostly because they cooked and cleaned for us and I had someone else to talk to while my husband was at work.

@Mrs. Microscope: I prefer the name Veronica, especially if you don't intend to use nicknames. I really love the nn Vivi, like @LauraBear suggested. I wanted to name baby girl Vivienne aka Vivi but hubby vetoed.

Anyone have any issues with restless leg syndrome? I am and it's driving me nuts! I had the same problem with my DS as well. I totally thought RLS was a bogus condition until my first pregnancy when I experienced it. Apparently it's fairly common in pregnancy. There are worse symptoms to have, that's for certain, but it is definitely annoying!

22 weeks now woohoo! This baby is sitting super low and her kicks actually hurt at times It also seems she detests when I wear pants or a seatbelt in the car because she kicks non stop if there is something on her, her big sister used to the same thing. Also considering spending the money on a prenatal massage some time in the near future because my hips and legs are starting to hurt. (I have an old back/neck injury which seems to be flaring up urgh)
Hope every one is doing well!

I had my follow up OB appointment today. Baby is fine (Why they couldn't tell me that over the phone so I didn't worry for a week I don't know ...) I'll be seeing a MFM specialist as well as the regular OBs from now on and have an additional ultrasound at 32 weeks. The MFM specialist should be calling me in the next few days to schedule an appointment.
