I'm sure that this varies from city to city - but I'm wondering - what is the average cost of day care? I just did a little math and if we upgrade my son from half days (8am to 12) to a longer schedule (8am to 330) then his day care costs will be nearly 25% of my salary. Before any tax or retirement.

This seems so crazy to me. I have a good job (I'm a CPA). Is this normal? Luckily, I also have my husband's income to consider and we have wonderful grandparents in town who help out with childcare, but I just can't wrap my brain around the fact that this may be a reasonable percentage of my income to spend on childcare.

I know there is something out there that suggests that housing should be about 25% of your take home pay (HA! We live in Los Angeles). I wonder where childcare comes into that scheme.

Any thoughts? Am I being had by my daycare? or am I naive?
