What detergent do you all use for your babies' clothes? I have been using Dreft. I bought a new bottle of it today and left it on a painted ledge leading up to our stairs. I left the house for the evening and saw that it had a leak and the detergent caused the paint to peel off the ledge! 
That can't be good! What is in the detergent that is causing paint to peel? I will look into this, just curious what you all use.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, water left on a ledge can make paint peel!

I'm sensitive to scents and have ridiculously sensitive skin, so I have always used free and clear detergent. I usually use arm and hammer free and clear for everyone's clothes and seventh generation ultra power plus for kiddo's cloth diapers.

@bushelandapeck: same.....a friend of mine used dreft and her 6 mo baby got a horrible rash from it. Her dermatologist said dreft's perfumes wete to blame and recommended free & clear degertents instead. So when i became a mom we switched straight to all free & clear.

I'm no scientist, but wouldn't we want detergent to get paint out of clothes? I would imagine all detergents have something that would break down paints, wood stain, etc faster than water. I highly doubt dreft has anything worse than all the other detergents mentioned, besides perfume/scent. And if that hasn't bothered your baby thus far I wouldn't worry.

I'm allergic to some detergents, so we all use All Free and Clear. I get kind of grossed out by strong smelling detergents.

detergents are going to have chemicals. I think the best you can try to do is avoid added scents and fragrances. I'm sure you can go the totally homemade route but there are chemicals there too and a sacrifice in efficacy to some degree.
The ingredients in the major manufacturers detergents are pretty much the same, minus not using dyes and perfumes for the "free and whatever" types. And avoid dryer sheets. -

I use both tide free and clear powder (less than the listed amount since I have soft water) and Charlie's soap with no problems.
I'm another one who can't stand scents (so no softener or dryer sheets either). I figure the less additives and such, the better!

Atm we are just using a random one that I like. When we have a little baby we just switch to any free and clear. So far so good.

I use Tide Free and Gentle. I hate scented detergent generally, and find Dreft to be ridiculously overly scented for small babies. I washed my clothes with it when I visited my sister and my clothes still smell like Dreft! Even after washing in my own detergent several times.
personal preference, but I prefer fragrance free for us all.

All free and clear for everyone -- I have sensitive skin and can't use scented laundry detergents. And like other people have said, I'm not surprised the dreft made the paint peel, it's just the chemical makeup of detergent (especially undiluted without all the water in a washing machine!). I'm sure my free and clear would do the same thing. If dreft has been working for your family, I wouldn't worry overmuch about it.

We use Tide HE Cold Wash (liquid) for clothes and Tide powder for cloth diapers and cloth pull-ups. No one in our house has sensitivities, but we've used these from Day 1 with both boys. We have hard water, as does most of the country to some degree, so plant-based or gentler detergents would require an additive.

I use Young Living detergent for kids/baby stuff, and then All Free and Clear, or Costco Free and Clear (whichever is on sale when I need it!) for the rest of the stuff!

I have been using the All Free and Clear but I do sprinkle in a few of the Dreft scent booster things for the babies things. I can control how much or little I put in and it gives it a little scent. I use Tide for my hubbies work clothes as we need the extra power that gives.
