@LadyDi: It's a Facebook group that's really popular in my area, you join based on your neighborhood and people offer up free things and you comment on the stuff you want. It's perfect for people with young kids who go through equipment and clothing so quickly. Check it out, you may have one in your area too, it's technically nationwide I think.

We got the Step 2 Whisper Ride push car. We live in the city so it's a fun summer alternative to a stroller.

I actually can't remember. But for her 1-year-old Christmas, she got a play kitchen.
I think I'm going to get DD2 a Nod Chair like her sister's.

I can't remember, but I know it was something small. Most likely, it was a couple of books. We haven't given her huge gifts for any holiday or birthday yet (she'll be 2 next month), but I do buy her small gifts through out the year. She gets plenty of gifts from grandparents. I also keep my eye out on our local buy nothing and we have scored an activity table, a play kitchen, several ride on toys, a tricycle, and a lot of other amazing items.

Thank you, girls, for sharing all of these idea!!
@2littlepumpkins: So funny you can't remember! And I can't believe that my precious little, super prayed for, IVF baby girl is going to be one already, either!
@muffinsmuffins: I like the personalized idea. I'm getting her a personalized birthday plate that she can use each year for her birthday. But I wanted to get her a present she will enjoy.
@Charm54: I've also considering getting her "nothing" since the party itself will cost quite a bit of money. I'm also giving suggestions to my parents and inlaws for gift ideas.
@caterw: I like the idea of a present that will last for a while.
@Kemma: I have a couple of hape items and they seem like really good quality. I like the idea of a kitchen, I would just need to find a spot for it. Cozy coupe is a cute idea, too.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: what is a learning tower? and what hape toy did you get? Can you send me a link?
@birdofafeather: I've never heard of a rody before!

@agold: here's the Hape LO has https://www.amazon.com/Hape-Little-Rider-Wooden-Kids/dp/B00IHZZOCO , there's also an adorable one in green. When LO uses it outside he tucks straw from the plant beds under the seat.
A learning tower is a kid-safe step stool that allows them to be at kitchen counter height. I ended up getting Little Partners brand, but there are others out there plus a bunch of DIY guides. Now, LO will be able to see everything I am doing without having to get picked up and eventually he will be able to help in the kitchen.

We have a tradition of getting a waldorf doll (a baby kind, not the bigger kid kind) for first birthdays. something special that they grow into.
we also are getting my baby a cloth ball that you can put a balloon into and then inflate- he loves chasing balls around.
oh- and a potty
My daughter got a soccer ball for her first birthday and it was a BIG hit.
we put the following items on our wishlist:
a ride on toy truck: http://a.co/hrRMy6g
wooden animal figurines
a mattress for his twin bed (we won't move him for awhile, but we'd like to get it all set up soon!)
we have way too many toys around here, so our new strategy is replacing some of the cheaper stuff with heirloom quality stuff. both sets of grandparents like to buy gifts, my inlaws do so pathologically, so this is an attempt to be able to donate our old toys and replace them with nicer stuff.
we have tried asking for experience gifts and they ended up getting us what we asked for (like a pass to the children's farm) AND several other toys.
ETA: my daughter picked out a Tegu block monster for him. We often give Tegu travel sets (the ones in the little felt pouch) as first birthday gifts- they are awesome little toy sets to throw in the diaper bag and pull out at a restaurant!

It was a bit of overkill, but my husband insisted on building her a swing set for her 1st birthday. I was going to just get her a small plastic climbing and sliding thing, but he figured we should go ahead and get something more permanent. It took a while before she was able to climb up the slide by herself, but she loved swinging right away.

@Silva: Those are all great ideas. What wooden animal toys do you get? I really love Ostheimer toys, but wasn't sure if those were right for a one year old.
@krispi: A swing set would be great if I had room for it!

@agold: yes those, or holtziger. but check the measurements. some of them (like the bunnies, baby animals, etc) are quite small. We have a few anamalz that are probably better for really little ones. they are super cute
