@mrbee: aren't you guys traveling right now? Could it be from something like a reaction to a different detergent used on the sheets?

I just got over hives from walking pneumonia. My only symptom was a cough and hives. I also got them from laundry detergent (but they didn't typically go away). It really could be anything.

My daughter had a similar issue with hives last year-they would come and go with no real warning or indication as to what caused them. They were big and red all over her legs and arms. I was worried about an allergy as it went on for what I thought was way too long.

We went to see an allergist who did still perform the skin test, but said that the most common cause of hives in children is some type of infection somewhere in the body. He did a swab for strep but said that it would potentially be anywhere in the body and prescribed an antibiotic. I was hesitant to actually use it because I don't them, but my daughter was too itchy that we did. And the hives went away and haven't been seen since.

I am sure that everyone's experience is different, but that was ours. I hope that your little man gets an answer and some relief!

When I was in college I had a random, very scary case of hives for a year. I would start with small ones on my arms or legs and within hours and some cases, minutes be completely swollen and hivey. Couldn't find a dr that could diagnose. Finally saw a fabulous allergist who put me on steroids and gave me an epi pen and I never had another episode again.

I would always take Benadryl as preventative, would help the swelling and itchiness of the hives.

@mrbee: gah, hope you guys find what it is and it's an easy fix! poor thing.
