I thought there might be a "Travel" board... But I guess car seats is appropriate. We are flying with our 2 year old in a month, he has been on a few flights but always as a lap baby. There seem to be all kinds of concessions for lap babies - you can check a car seat, gate check stroller, carry on extra bag for diaper bag. But I can't find anything about checking car seats for a paying passenger. We are still not decided about whether we will bring his car seat on the plane with us, but if not, will we be allowed to check it as an additional bag? We are flying Frontier and we each have one checked bag, I believe, but I'm afraid we will have to use them all. Thanks!

I think youcan check it! It's a car seat no matter what age the passenger is they should accept it.

Just an FYI, when you check a car seat, it then has an unknown history, so it's really not recommended!
I don't know what rules the airline has in place for checking a car seat for a purchased seat.

We're flying on Sunday with our 2 year old and her carseat (10 hour flight. Ah!). We're going to take it on the plane and install it in her seat.
If you're going to check, do it at the gate instead of at the counter. That minimizes the baggage handlers handling it and minimizes the risk of damage. I think most airlines will do a carseat and stroller at the gate.

If you're buying a seat anyway, why not just install the seat for the flight? Increased safety and you don't run the risk of damaging it while it's checked. Most seats' warranties are voided once checked - even if there's no damage.

@loveisstrange: Wow, good luck!! Our flight is like 1.5 hours and I think my DH already has nightmares about it
@Weagle: That's the direction we are leaning, looking like we will end up taking it on board. My concern was giving him less space to move around but I guess he rides in the car seat without too much trouble for 1.5 hour car rides.

@Weagle: Yeah, that's what I was thinking too - your LO will be comfortable in a seat they're used to, it's safer if you run into any turbulence or have a not so smooth landing, and there's no concern about baggage handlers throwing it around and causing internal damage to the seat. Just use it on the plane!

@shellio: so, we did our flight on Sunday. 100% recommend taking the car seat. She was much more comfortable in it and less fussy than when she sat in a normal seat.

At 2 and for a short flight where you don't need to feed a meal, I'd use the seat on the plane.

@loveisstrange: @looch: Thanks! I want to take the car seat but don't think DH is sold... our 6 month old will be with us too so that complicates the logistics of bringing it.
