Has anyone gotten a cold sore while pregnant? I used to get them often before and I have a prescription for Valtrex to take for it. I'm going to call the Dr today, but I doubt I can take that now while I'm pregnant.
What else can I do to reduce and make my cold sore go away faster? Any special foods or drinks?

@MrsBrewer: keep it covered with something moisturizing, but other than that I think that's about all you can do. The Valtrex is best used before you actually see the cold sore so not sure if it's worth it.
I don't get cold sores but I get terrible aphthous ulcers! Both are most likely due to hormones and lowered immune response

Ask your OB if lysine is safe in pregnancy. I honestly don't know if it is pregnancy safe, but it is believed to help with prevention and shortening outbreaks.

@yellowbird: I think I'm just starting to notice the blistering, it was tender last night, so that's probably when it would have been the best time to take the Valtrex (if it would be safe). i Will definitely keep putting a a chapstick on (then promptly buy a new one once this darn thing is gone!)

@MrsBrewer: Could you put Aquaphor on it? I use that around my nose when I get sick because my skin gets so dry and chapped. After a couple of days, everything is as good as new. I get mine from the baby aisle (and I use the cheap Target brand too).

I had one at 9 weeks with both my pregnancies 
The doctor said Abreva was safe, but I chose to just wait it out. They did not want me to take Valtrex in the first trimester. I find ice helps keep it from getting too large.

@MrsBrewer: I use lysine when not pregnant, but a pharmacist said he didn't recommend continuing when pregnant.
My OB said famciclovir (which I take when I get an outbreak) is safe during pregnancy, although I tend to skip it unless the outbreak is awful. I don't know if that's the same as Valtrex, though.
I usually get one cold sore near the beginning of pregnancy, and then it seems like the pregnancy makes me immune to them for the rest of the time. At least so far (and it was true with DS's pregnancy).

Valtrex is safe during pregnancy. I don't think it matters what trimester. Taking it daily helps suppress any outbreaks. If you get one, the usual dose is 2 500mg pills per day for 3 days.

Ugh, stupid cold sores! Not pregnant but I started getting the tingling this weekend and have been using lysine balm like crazy. Still got a cold sore anyway. Trying to keep it at bay.
Good to know I shouldn't use lysine if I get pregnant.

@MrsBrewer: when I asked about valtrex for cold sores my midwife said it is the same medication used during pregnancy for genital herpes so even though it isn't tested in Canada for cold sores they consider it safe.

@As Time Goes By: Valtrex is for herpes of any kind, which includes cold sores then.
