We are keeping the crib as long as possible but I'm ready to get rid of the changing table and put up some book shelves. I feel like we are going to have a transition room for a while. Not a nursery, but not a big girl room either.
If you did, what did/does yours look like?
(she isn't potty trained, I just don't use the table anymore)

Once I got pregnant with E we started transitioning her room. She is also still in a crib but we got rid of the changing pad that was on her dresser, as well as the glider/ottoman. We replaced that corner with a small bookshelf and a little chair.

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking but I have similar interests and questions. We have a 10 month old but are also expecting a baby in March. Our son will be 17 months when the baby arrives. We'll be moving into a new house in the next couple of months and they'll each have their own rooms but I don't know if I should get a toddler bed for our older sons room or which direction to go.
For those of you with kids close in age, how did you handle it?

Yeah, I guess we technically did!
We never had a changing table, but we did do small "upgrades" to her room when we turned her crib into a toddler bed. We allowed her to have toys in her room, which we hadn't before.
Now she's got a big kid room! I think the slower transition helped her not feel like she was being bombarded with changes.

We didn't really change anything - we turned the crib into a bed and that was that. Maybe a few more toys ?

We just removed the changing table top off of our dresser (it's one of those convertible things) and rearranged some of his stuff to make it more accessible to him and also safer. We haven't bought anything different, however.

We pretty much transitioned to a big girl room right away. She was crawling out of her crib so we got a twin mattress and just decided to do new furniture and keep the nursery stuff together for baby #2 (which was conceived about 3 months later.)

@mediagirl: @autumnlove: thread jacking... But how do you change diapers without a change pad? We moved our off the dresser but still use it on the floor.

We started from a fresh slate last year...we have a full sized bed and my old bedroom set, it is considered "youth" furniture, so it's a bit smaller in scale. We have the desk/hutch set up and I use the desk portion as a bookshelf because we don't have a lot of wall space.
The biggest thing for me to let go of was actual decor. I should take a photo of how my son has styled one of his dressers...he uses it to park his collection of cars and I have had to kind of step back and let him do his thing, where I would have put cute accessories.

@sslm: what type of flooring do you have? We have carpet so she just lays down on the ground and I change her directly on the carpet.

@sslm: Ah, my 2.5 year old is potty trained but we still use the pad for diapers for LO 2!

@linzeelou: would you be willing to keep your son in a crib even after the new baby comes or do you need it for the new baby? I don't have two but I think I would have left our daughter in her crib and bought another ($100 ikea) crib for the new baby. I'm all about keeping her contained as long as possible.

I've been trying to decide how much effort I want to put into doing this. LO doesn't really play in her room, though I'm getting to the point where toys need to be there instead of the living room. However, when #2 starts sleeping fairly well we will have them in the same room. So, is it worth it to make it a more "transitional" room? Any ideas?

We put LO's big girl bed in her room (in addition to her crib), and got her a chest of drawers (the dresser/changing table and glder went to the nursery for LO2). Once we moved the crib out, we moved a book shelf in.
Our plan was to keep LO1 in her crib as long as she was happy. We started reading books in her big girl bed and soon enough she transitioned herself. We kept the crib in there for a month or so, then took it out and put it in the nursery.

We haven't really transitioned LO's room at all. We transitioned her crib to a toddler bed about 4/5 months ago. We used a dresser as her changing table, and still use it every day. She prefers to get dressed on the changing pad even at 28 months. It also keeps her from running away while getting dressed. We also still have the glider in there and use it frequently at bedtime. The only transition we will make is when she outgrows her toddler bed, the changing pad off the dresser and the glider.

D and I lived with my parents during that time, and since his crib was basically in the guest room, he just switched to the big bed from the crib when he was ready and we took the changing pad off the dresser. He didn't have a lot of toys at that point.

@mediagirl: we have hardwood. She has an area rug in her room but I'm still scared she'll pee all over it!!! Haha.

Following this thread! LO is 18 months now, I'm due with #2 in December, and we're moving in two weeks. We've already sold his dresser and changing table because we don't have room for them in the moving trailer. So we're basically starting from scratch! Not sure what exactly we'll do.
He's currently still in his crib, but I will need to transition him out of it (to a floor bed?) before the baby is here. Maybe I should go ahead and turn the crib into a toddler bed when we move??
Then maybe just get a dresser for his clothes and let that be it. Hmm.

@sslm: hahahaha. Maybe consider a changing pad - like one of the ones you carry in a diaper bag for the floor? That would save your rug if she peed!

@mediagirl: I'm not sure what to do! The plan was to designate one room as the nursery with a crib and then have another room for my son. However, maybe since he'll only be 17 months we should consider keeping him in a crib and not a floor bed or toddler bed. Hmm....I might have to dig through some old posts and see when most people transition from crib to bed.
@AUTUMNLOVE: So how long did you or do you plan to leave LO1 in the crib? He'll be walking soon so it would be nice to be able to keep him contained as long as possible.
