I'm a lawyer and while I generally like my job/line of work, there are days - like today - when I am totally over it. Frankly, even when I really like it, its not as is I wake up in the morning super excited (or excited at all) to go to work. As I daydream about a more fulfilling career, I'm wondering if anyone loves their job so much that they wake up excited to go ever morning...or is everyone else just plugging along too?

Well, I really like my job, but no - it's way too early in the morning to be excited to go. It's kind of like the gym. I don't want to go, but I'm happy I'm there afterwards.

However, I don't know exactly how he feels, but I work with a man who is about 87? I think. He is so with it! I once asked him why he still works and he told me that he genuinely loves his job.

@Grace: agreed! I really like my job (a nurse) but I'm not excited to go. In the mornings I wish I could be paid to be a SAHM, but in the evenings I'm happy to have the job I do (even if I'm exhausted some nights!). Somedays I want "something better" but I have yet to figure out what that would be!

@.twist.: I've worked with attorneys in their 80s who clearly have the means to retire but don't. They LOVE it. So foreign to me.....

I do! I'm not currently working (SAHM) but I will be again soon. Both of my jobs (doula and aid worker) are very fulfilling. I love my jobs.

@Madison43: That is the same situation with this man. He's well within his means to retire yet... keeps truckin. I'm currently hoping for early retirement. Like tomorrow. So... if my lottery ticket would buy itself and win today that would be fantastic.
ETA: I just got back to work though and like being working... So.. clearly I'm completely fickle and undecided and wish I knew what I wanted out of life. le sigh. HAH

No.. It pays the bills, I enjoy it to a certain degree, I believe I am here for a purpose, but my life fulfillment def does not come from my job.

I do love my job (elementary teacher) but there is no job in the world that I'd be excited about getting up in the morning for.

Most days yes. There are even days where I am excited to get to work so I can do some things or follow up where I was from yesterday Etc. Sure there are some down or boring days or times but I don't mind too much. Just wish there was more flexibility for going home or working from home when things were slow.

I don't even like being a lawyer, let alone love it. But I think that is pretty common in our profession

I SAH and blog now and feel fulfilled but I also did working in program/event management in the nonprofit field. I didn't love everything about my job but usually enjoyed going in to work and doing what I did!

I did, and i think thats one of the reasons i have struggled with leaving my job to sah, even though it is what i wanted. I felt like i made a difference every single day, and that made all the other stuff worth it. I think eventually i will feel that way again about being home (sometimes i do) and hope to feel that way again when i go back to work when my kiddos are older.

I love my job! It has its moments for sure, but there have only been a handful of days when I felt like it would be more fulfilling to stay home and in bed.

I don't feel that way about my current job - though I have felt like that in my tenure here -- but I am switching to a new job next month and hope I'll feel this way again!

In my ideal world there would be no waking up early in the morning, but other than that...I truly enjoy my job most of the time and am often excited by the items on my day's to do list. I'm an engineer who does a fair bit of project management.

By the work itself, not really, it's a lot of analysis. But I really like it because it's problem solving more than anything.

I've never thought to see my job as something to provide fulfillment. It's just something to do, so I can live the life I want. As long as I don't 100% DREAD going to work every day, everyone has bad days

I do! I love my job and it's something I'm very passionate about. There are rough days of course, but I couldn't imagine doing anything else and hope to work for a long, long time. I have the perfect work/home balance for me (I wohm PT), so the combination of that and having a job I enjoy, really makes a significant difference in my life.

I feel extremely fulfilled as a full time parent, and I'm already regretting committing to part time preschool in the fall. Before her, I loved my research job. Contributing to the expansion of human knowledge felt really important to me.
I'm trying to make a bit of a career shift now, and figuring out what would really fulfill me has been very important. I don't want to go through life spending most of my time doing something I'm not passionate about. I feel extremely lucky to have the privilege to feel that way.

Mostly yes! I don't make as much as I want and I don't like the commute, but I really enjoy what I do and I like the people with whom I work.

I'm a dietitian - every once in awhile I'll feel like I really got to someone and helped them out, but most of the time my job is lame and and I'm bored!

@Mrs. Lion: Depends on what you want to do with it! I think private practice RD's (ie. counseling/education) probably get the most fulfillment, I work in the acute care setting and most of the time patients couldn't care less about what I have to say

So jealous of you that really love your jobs ... But I'm not going to lie, it makes me feel a teensy bit better than most of you are meh about your careers too!

i would want to do public outreach type stuff....i think i have pretty much decided that it wont be worth the time or money for the degree to work with a non-profit, when i can do similar outreach related to my teaching degree instead. I am really fascinated with food and nutrition though -
@Mae: that's why I wanted to ask everyone. If I directed the question to just practicing attorneys, it would be a universal no.

@Madison43: I'm a lawyer, but was able to move in house and then work 3 days after #2. I wouldn't say I love, but I appreciate it so much more now! I do transactional work, so not sure if that matters!

@Madison43: I'm an attorney in a niche field and I really enjoy my job but I'm not sure I would use the term "fulfilled." I'm not sure if any job would reach that level for me.

most days I am happy to have a job, especially a non-stressful job. Are there mornings I wish I was in yoga pants hanging out at home and running errands? totally.

Oh and I'm an attorney too. So to answer your question, no I am not fulfilled but I am also not as miserable as I was in private practice

I like my job--but don't know that I'd EVER be 100% fulfilled. I think that I'd always feel like something was missing/I could be doing more.

Definitely not. My job is ridiculously boring, I only do it because it pays well and I'm not really sure what my other options are right now... I've been working in this field for 9 years so it's difficult to imagine doing anything else.

I have been an NICU nurse for 8 years and I still love my job and think it is amazing, and feel lucky to have ended up where I am!
, then it's ok in my book.
