I apparently slept through it but DH said he heard the baby (11 months) start to cry and was thrashing around in his crib. So, he took him out and he continued to thrash around while his eyes were closed and was whimpering. It took awhile but DS finally settled down.
We were really busy yesterday and LO went to bed two hours later than normal (I know, I know...)
Anyway, does this sound like a night terror? It just seems really young.

My 13 month old seems to be getting these the past couple of nights at 2-3:30am. A couple of days ago, I picked him up from his crib, rocked him, and put him back down. He fell back asleep immediately. Last night, he had another one. I checked the monitor, he was still sleeping on his tummy and got quiet soon after.

DS often had night terrors even though he was "too young". It sounds like it could be - but I'm surprised you slept through it. With DS, night terror screaming is totally different from regular crying or screaming. It it gut wrenching and sounds horrific - but he is completely unresponsive and still asleep. The vast majority of the time, we can not wake him up or calm him down at all -- we just have to keep him safe and let him get through it. For us, that usually means putting him on the rug outside of his crib with nothing nearby, and just sitting there with him while he thrashes around on the floor. Very rarely, a bottle or sippy cup of milk will snap him out of it, but it has only worked once or twice.

I haven't witnessed a night terror firsthand, but my friend's son has them and had them as young as 7-9 months (I forget exactly how young, but well under 1.
Generally you can't wake a child who is experiencing a night terror - you just need to make sure they are safe and ride it out, unfortunately. Mrs. Blue posted about her child's, which might be helpful to you.

DS1 had night terrors from about 10m-18m. He would SCREAM his head off, eyes completely shut, but he wouldn't move - he would be stiff as a board.
That being said, it definitely could be night terrors. They're really scary/sad for the parent, but he'll be fine!

My daughter had a few night terrors when she started dropping her nap. They typically occur just a couple hours after they have gone to sleep for the night. She would sit up, thrash around, scream "no!" over and over again at the top of her lungs, and look right through us (her eyes would be open, but she was definitely still asleep).
We'd turn the light on and just sit next to her until she woke up (holding her made it WAY worse). As soon as she woke up it was alike a light switch- she was immediately calm, albeit a little confused. -
That does sound like a night terror. DS had one or two around that age, and DD had one at like 9 months. They're scary. I think I read that being off routine or too hot can be some triggers. For me, turning the light on and washing their face with cool water helped wake them.

Our oldest had night terrors quite a bit and it started before she was a year old. They finally stopped around 2 yrs old. With hers, her eyes were open and she would look at us, but she wasn't really focusing. The thrashing and screaming terrified us, and the more we tried to touch her, the worse she would get . Eventually we learned to just talk to her until she could snap out of it and then she would pass right back out.

That definitely could be a night terror. My LO started having them around 8 months (just around the time she started sleeping through the night) and still does occasionally at 20 mos. It is almost always on nights where her routine was off during the day, or she went to bed later than usual. I will say though, it is always clear when she is having one because the crying is like nothing else, and even when picked up she doesn't notice anything around her. For us, the only think that snaps her out of it (works most of the time) is a bottle/sippy combined with music and turning the lights on and off.
We often have a different experience, where E cries normally and thrashes around, and then goes quickly back to sleep. The doctor and I think that this is basically her version of sleepwalking and talking in her sleep, since it doesn't come with the terrifying wails of the night terrors. Perhaps this is what happened with your LO?

My LO has "bad dreams" where is trashes and wimpers/cries in his sleep and sometimes talks a little. He's 16 months and has about 8 words, mostly he says "woof woof" it's really funny but also confusing.
We have had two very different night terror episodes where he couldn't be soothed and the screaming was something I have never heard from him before. A bottle finally calmed him and he went right back to sleep.

Sounds like it, around that age too! DD had it, she would some times cry really loudly MOTN but not wake up. She has also screamed mommy
She sleeps with us so I heard it all! It peaked around this time but she hasn't had it in a long time (she's 18 mo).

Thank you everyone! He did spend some time at the park yesterday when it was starting to heat up. Going to keep things as relaxed as possible today.
