My first c-section was a regular one but the second time around was ai n a different hospital and they offered me a family centered c-section. This means they dropped the blue drapes so we could see them cut the cord and could see DS immediately after birth, they also allowed immediate skin to skin bonding time.
I'm happy I got to do this and it really improved the birth experience but I wonder why my old hospital didnt offer that. Did your hospital offer this?

My hospital did not offer anything like this but I am delivering at the same hospital this year, a few years later and my doctor said they have implemented more options like this. It might be becoming more common elsewhere too.

It is a fairly new practice that is becoming more mainstream. I didn't have a c-section but if I needed one then this would have been an option.

This is the standard at the hospital I has my c-section at. They didn't call it anything; just their standard procedures for c-sections.

My first was an emergency so LO was sent with the NICU team that were in the OR. My second was scheduled with no NICU team in place. My experience was different. They did not drop the drape (and I wouldn't have wanted it), but LO was given to DH and in turn he held her to me quickly, while they finished up the surgery. She was then cleaned up and moved to recovery and I joined her just as they were finishing her bath.
Same hospital, three years apart but I think the driving difference was emergency vs scheduled.

@Mrsbells: To get "baby friendly" designation our hospital does skin-to-skin contact after just a brief check by the NICU team after c-sections. They told my husband he could watch the whole thing if he wanted. They didn't drop the drape though. I would have declined anyway - the thought of it right now makes me almost want to pass out.

I asked but was told my hospital didn't do this, which I found frustrating because they're supposed to be very family centered, it's run by a midwife, and they're doing a lot of work to lower their c section rate. They did let me do skin to skin bonding as soon as he was checked and weighed, and I was able to watch a lot of the procedure in the reflection of the overhead lights, but I don't think that was deliberate.

@My Only Sunshine: you dont see the inside of your belly or anything you just see the baby right after being born. because you are still lying down flat, so its not like you can sit up and sit whats happening to your insides -
i'm asking my midwife about the potential for doing this tonight. It's fairly new here but i'm hoping that they can help me achieve this.

I had DS1 in 2013 and it wasn't offered. By 2015, when I had DS2, the hospital changed their entire baby policies. They no longer offer pacifiers, no longer utilize the nursery (everything is done in-room), and they offered a more family-centered c-section. The only real difference in the c-sec though was faster skin to skin contact. I would have thrown up or passed out (or both), if they had lowered that drape - I literally can't handle seeing ANY blood.

No, they held her up over the curtain after she was out and the cord was cut (DH was allowed to stand up to see, so he did) and then they took her over to get her breathing. After they got her all cleaned up they brought her to me and put her on my chest, so we got to do skin to skin while they were putting me back together

For my c-section they asked my husband if he wanted to watch (and he did!). I got to hold her for a brief moment, but then they took her since she was a month early and needed to be checked out. I got her back about an hour later.

My hospital didn't offer this 2 years ago, but I would have declined! Just like @My Only Sunshine: I would have either passed out or thrown up. No offense, daughter
On the other hand, they brought my husband back into the OR when I was already cut open, so he saw that and then he watched our daughter being born. I was shocked when he stood up! After they checked her out and stitched me back up, I got to hold her... It was probably only 30 min?

My hospital isn't doing it yet, we were going to trial it with me (as I am an NICU nurse there) and did the lower drape, etc, but my daughter was in distress immediately after birth and we weren't able to do skin to skin in the OR as she required resuscitation and ended up in NICU. I was a little sad about it, but a breathing baby was more important.

@Mrsbells: Never heard of this but that freaking cool! I'm having a repeat c-section in April and would LOVE this opinion. I told DH to please record this c-section for me. I want to see my sweet babe being born!

My hospital did not offer this, but I'm squeamish and probably would have declined the drape part. Immediate skin to skin sounds great especially in situations when the cesarean is completely elective and the baby is healthy.

@bubblegum: yeah its pretty cool. although they dont drop the drape until after the baby is already out and crying. They told me ahead of time that they wouldnt drop the drape if he wasnt breathing/crying. They would focus on trying to get him breathing first. So there is that split second where they tell you they are about to take the baby out, the we heard him crying and then they dropped the drape
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: yeah i really preferred it. With DD i didnt get to hold her til after she was weighed and cleaned up and already swaddled. but with DD they put him on my chest right away. -
@Mrsbells: Beyond cool! I didn't get to see DS until he was cleaned and bundled up and although I was so happy either way I would really like to see my baby ASAP!

Both my c-sections were scheduled and in the same hospital. I asked for immediate skin-to-skin both times, I got it after the initial newborn exam, while they were closing me up.
They never discussed whether they would drop the drape with us but the first time they didn't (they did warn DH when to look over it to get photos though) and the second time they did, so I saw my little guy with his head sticking out of my belly as they lifted him out. I really liked being able to do that!
