I am visiting a friend this weekend who just had her second baby girl. I want to bring something practical but personal. In addition, i will probably bring her a food item and a small pack of diapers. I also think I should get something for the older kid as "big sister" kind of present.

I like personalized presents, though they sometimes take more time to order. A friend got my daughter a melamine dining plate with her name on it. I got a friend's baby a blanket with his name on it.
How old is the older sister? Any idea what she likes? It is sweet of you to think of her and I'm sure doing something for her will be appreciated, even if it's something small.

i just went through this exactly. i ended up asking her if there was anything she needed two of and she suggested a sound machine. they had one for the baby but now older sister was waking in the night when she heard the baby cry. so i thought that was a great solution and bought them one from target that they seem to be loving.
i brought the older sister a big colouring/reusable sticker book with toddler crayons and it was a hit!

I recently went to a birthday party for a three year old girl with a two week old baby sister. I gave them matching PJs.

I loved getting a blanket for K, because L has soooo many, and no one got any for K.
People were actually really great at getting big Sis presents for L - I think she got an equal number of gifts! She got books (she loves books), and work got her a baby doll and a stroller which she is obsessed with. She also got a lot of toys and matching clothes.

@californiadreams: I think 3T should be fine. Even if she's small, PJs are always tight and it's nice to get more wear out of them.
I got them at Carter's on clearance and spent like $10 for both!!

I think gift cards are the most useful thing for people having a second child, but it's one of the more awkward things to ask for. And since people tend to wait until end of pregnancy/birth to give gifts for a 2nd baby, they probably have all the big stuff and need random things that got forgotten along the way. Stickers/activity books are good for keeping a big sister entertained, or if she has a baby doll you could get accessories for it (like a feeding set, diapers set, etc so she can imitate mom w/the baby)

I love personalized things for the second baby - bibs, burp cloths, etc. I felt like DS2 had so many hand me downs, he deserved some of his "own" things.

I think one of the best gifts I received for my second daughter was Tylenol, gripe water, advil, and diaper cream. Can never have too much of that stuff on hand.
