My friend recently had a daughter she named Aria. It's a beautiful name. She picked it out 3-4 years ago when it wasn't that common.
After she named her daughter, she found out that that the name had became really popular this year. I told her it may be partly because Aria is the name of the main character in Pretty Little Liars, which she had never heard of.

DS's name is Gavin. When he was born it was just in the top 100 (78 for his birth year) so not SUPER popular for a boys name. Now around the top 50.
The boys name we have picked out this go round is around the top 50 but pretty much always had been.
Still no idea for a girls name, but we want sometime at least out of the top 100 in the recent past years.

Super popular, her name is Olivia but I was not deterred. Maybe I will be sorry once she starts school and everyone is named Olivia and she tells me she hates her name. Hope not! We mostly call her Lily which is also pretty popular.

I have only heard of one other person's name that is my DS's name. Our DD's name (which has not been announced!) is a name off a TV show, but I have never heard of anyone named it! Hopefully it will stay that way

No kids, but I've seen lots of Addisons popping up since Grey's Anatomy. I think TV is a popular baby name source, whether people want to admit it or not.

No kids yet either. I agree with @Rachel about tv. My mom said she heard my name on a soap opera. I really like the names Quinn , FInn, and Aria but I don't think I will use them now because of tv.

Mavrick isn't very popular. Especially in Qc because it's a pretty English name. I love uncommon names. Too bad for Aria. It's a beautiful name but PLL defintiely will be the source of arias in the upcoming years.

My daughter's name was popular in the 1800s! In all the baby name books I've seen, her name is verrrrrrrrrrrrry low on the popularity side.

Elliot is ranked #301 for 2010. I personally do not know of anyone with his name, and I don't think there are any popular television characters with the name either. When thinking of baby names, I tried to avoid popular ones.

@yin: My friend named her daughter "Eliot" - after the 19th-century female writer, George Eliot (she used a male name to ensure her writing was taken seriously). But there is also a female character named Eliot on the show "Scrubs." According to my friend, she knows THREE girl Eliots! I've only met one boy Elliot.

Our daughters name is popular - top 10, but I love it! I like to think that popular names are popular because they are great names. My husband and I both have pretty common names and never felt bothered by it. My sister on the other hand has a name with a unique spelling and she has spent her entire life telling people how to spell it. I have no qualms about the name we picked.

Our number one choice (depending on the source you use), is like number 437, so I don't imagine her having very many friends with the same name.
Last week at my last appointment, my doctor asked if we had a name for her yet, and she said that it was a great name, and NOT the same name as the last ten patients in her office. I think we chose well!

Our little man is Lyle -- not in the top 1000 -- and that is one of the main reasons we chose it! We really really wanted an uncommon name that was still actually a name. We didn't find out until after we decided on the name about the "Lyle Lyle Crocodile" books ... but we love that too! Our girl name is not in the top 1000 either, but we are keeping it a secret for SURE!
My friend named her son Liam ... and that day in her hospital there were FOUR Liam's born - including her ROOMMATE. How crazy??

My son's name (Kishan) is #3827 on Babycenter... it's Hindi, and my husband is Tamil, so we don't have any friends/relatives with that name.. we wanted something unique!

Sadly the name we picked seems to have gotten pretty popular, if it's not in the top 10 it's likely in the top 20. We picked it a few years back when it didn't seem to be quite so popular. We know a baby born 2 months before with the same name, and one a month after that not only has the same first, but also the same middle name! At the end of the day we love his name, hopefully DS will also, and that's really all the matters. I think popular names are popular because they truly are great names.

Charlotte is pretty popular this year, and it's totally my call on that one. The hubs wanted to name her straight up Charlie, but I wanted her to have a "girlier" option, just in case she gets a professional job someday and needs to be taken seriously. I wanted Charlene, but hubs didn't like it. So Charlotte it is!

DD#1's name is pretty old school... so it's definitely not common among her peers. When I was pregnant and when she was a baby, old ladies just loved her name. I'm pretty sure it was somewhat popular in the 1950s era.
DD#2 has a more modern name, but it's not too popular. This fall I was a little sad when I found out it's the name of the main girl in Suburbatory (new tv show).... hoping it doesn't catch on too much.

We have picked the name Calder for our little guy, and it is not popular. I still usually have to say it twice and then spell it when people ask, but that would probably be the case with all except the most popular names. DH has a super common name and was very against using very popular names for our kids, he hated being one of 3 or 4 in school and also at every job he's had with the same name. But every time we thought of a name we liked, we'd check and of course it was spiking in popularity! We're trying to find names that aren't super popular but that are traditional names. Currently we are at a stand-still on boy names. We just can't agree on one! As for girl names, the one we like is #103. It seems to be going down, though which is good.

@shellio: i knew a girl who wanted to name her son calder, but seeing his face when he was born, she switched the first and middle names, so calder became the middle name.

Not preg yet, but our first pick for a girl name is Heidi, which really isn't super popular (401 on Babycenter), but I've always loved. We're stuck with Derrick for a boy since my husband is a II, but I don't know many little Derricks or Dereks running around. We plan on calling him Tripp since he'll be Derrick III and my husband is already saddled with "Little Derrick" in his family (poor guy).

Our soon to be son's name is Sidney (#760 on babycenter). We love it because it is a family name regardless of the number. That being said, my name is consistently in the top 20 every year (and was number 1 the year I was born) - and I've always hated having a super common name.

The girl name I'm leaning towards is in the top 10 on Babycenter and ranks #17 in the US. But we live abroad and it's nowhere as popular here.
The boy name I like is ranked #934! It's an old name, but not unusual ... I'm still talking DH into it =)

@tequiero21: That's neat, I have heard that from a few people (that their baby didn't really look like the name they had picked out) but I always feel like the name sort of adapts to the baby. I have friends and family that have named their babies something I definitely would not have chosen (to put it nicely) but after a while, the name just represents the wonderful child and you forget what you thought about it before.

The names we've picked out are on opposite sides of the board. Some of them are very unusual, I've never heard of someone with that name and they aren't even on the top 1000.
On the other hand, we also love Sofia and Isabella, which are extremely popular.
I don't really care though, because we live overseas and the names aren't common at all here.
