Yes she can but she just learned maybe two months ago? She turned 3 at the end of August.

No, it's not something I'm concerned about. We have not worked with her on it and neither does daycare.

DS1 (3) cannot write his name. He has no interest in art/coloring/drawing, etc. I am not worried.

@BandDmommy: he has to sign in at daycare???
Our daycare is NAEYC certified and they work with the kids on all age appropriate items that is state required. I'm not sure if name writing is on the docket for this "school year". I know they have been working on writing letters at school. I'm honestly not worried.
I know a few of the pp, their kids are advanced when it comes to writing/coloring skills.

IF you want to work with him on it. There are websites where you can input his name and it will print out a traceable form like the A, B, Cs we see at school. But again, I really don't think it's a big deal that at 3 he can't write his name yet.

@BandDmommy: my LO's school hasn't even started working on writing yet (I don't think?) she just expressed an interest because she loves to draw/write/color. If she didn't express interest in learning she still wouldn't know. I wouldn't stress! He's only 3.

She tries, but she can't do it well. She can recite all the letters in order to me verbally. So she knows how to spell it. And school has had her practicing tracing it. But she just doesn't have the hand coordination yet to write it free hand. She'll be three in a couple weeks, I'm not worried at all.

nope! Just his first initial. He knows how to spell it, but can't write it yet, he turns 3 next week! I've never worked on it with him. He's always just been into drawing and copying/tracing things, etc. I wouldn't think of it as a missed or delayed milestone until Kindergarten!

Nope. Can't write any letters, and I've never worked on it (SAHM here). His teachers at school said it's very normal for boys to be slightly behind in fine motor skills like coloring and writing/tracing, and closer to 3.5/4 is when they start to do that stuff.

At 3, no my son couldn't write his name. At that age, they don't have the fine motor skills to properly hold a writing utensil anyway, so I decided not to work on it at home because I didn't want to create bad habits that needed to be broken later.

Nope - turned 3 in September. They practice tracing letters at school but not the name yet. However, he is still in the 2 year old class because he only recently potty trained. Maybe that's something they work on in the 3 year old class?

It's not required, but in the states where most of you are Kindergarten has become the new first grade, and so Kindergarten teachers don't really have the time to teach kids how to print their names.

My daughter is 3.5, and is very proud of herself to know how to read and write her H. The rest will come as she's ready.

Nope! I know they're practicing writing letters as they learn them in preschool but I don't think they're expected to be able to do it on their own at this point.

No. He can write a couple letters, but not legibly. I DO work on this with him at home, but he is not interested. He'd rather do numbers work than letter work. For example, he can already add and subtract, and count pretty high. He can recognize larger numbers too. But when it comes to letters, he knows the ABC's, the sounds the letters make, and that's about it.

Sort of. She has written it before, but only when I sit with her and help talk her through how to make each letter. She hasn’t done it on her own, without me verbally reminding her how to make each letter. LO is almost 3.5 years old.

We recently had preschool open-house night and while they are working on writing letters and names, only 1 child in the class can write his name on his own (and he's close to 4). Our daycare is NAEYC certified too, so it isn’t like they are a slacker daycare; they focus a lot on academics. There were a few parents there who were really pushing for kids to be able to write their names and the teachers and preschool director were really clear that it is NOT expected at this age.

@looch: I guess I meant that that is the age where it is appropriate to know how to do so, not necessarily learn how to do so. Regardless, I don't think it's a 3 year old milestone. a 5 year old milestone, yes....that's when kids enter kindergarten where i live.

@winniebee: Yes I would agree it's closer to a 5 year milestone. But as with everything, there's a range. There are kids in my son's class that can write evenly and small, correct capitalization. Then there's my son, who uses all lowercase in his name.

It kind of just happened one day, he all of a sudden was writing.

@looch: that's interesting (and good to know!) T is currently working on drawing animals (which all look the same to me....and which all look like blobs with sticks for legs )

Nope! He just started telling people when they ask what his name is.
