"How rich would you be if you invested instead of having a wedding?"

Eh, a wedding I like any luxury item IMO. If you can really afford it and would "miss" that money, don't spend it. The same could be said about e-rings, cars we buy, eating out, clothes, hair cuts and color, etc. There could easily be a calculator of how much you would have if you didn't spend on this or that.

We pretty much made it all back and came out more or less even!

@PurplePumps: yep, or how "rich" you could be if you invested instead of having kids

@Anya: no kidding, especially for those with IF spending thousands and tens of thousands to even get pregnant in the first place. Sorry kid, there went your college fund.

We put in about 40% ($20K) of our wedding cost and my parents paid for the rest. I have no regrets, as it was one of the best days ever! Never again will I have all my closest friends and family together in one place. Luckily we recouped our $20K back in gifts!

    That was a depressing number...

Not very. We spent less than $500 on getting married.

@yoursilverlining: also, who is to say that people would've actually invested that money?

Though my parents paid for the wedding, we got the same amount in gifts. No regrets!

Our wedding cost a fortune, it was amazing! I had the time of my life. We also had the honeymoon of a lifetime. When I was elbow deep in MOTN wakeups, blowouts and poop everywhere, those memories were instrumental in keeping me going. Wouldn't swap them for the world!

That said, I also enjoy a Fendi handbag so maybe my values are different:)

I would be 1,500 "richer" but my dad paid for our wedding (8k--we got married on the beach) and it's only been a year and a half.

we could have had a nice little nest egg, BUT we got married in 2008 so we could have lost most of it because of the stock market tanked after that

That is a little depressing! However, I couldn't imagine not having our wedding, and we tried to keep it a budget wedding. I also included the cost of our honeymoon, which I would never want to give up. That trip was awesome!

@bunnylove08: well really you would have made a fortune if you were reinvesting the dividends etc because you would have been buying at the low point and the market has rebounded and then some since then!

@plantains: haha yes according to the site it would have been over 20K ... oh c'est la vie

Meh--we only spent about $1000 in the first place--it was small and simple and we only had about 20 guests, but it was lovely!! $1000 well spent, I say!!

No regrets. It was pricey, but we have a bunch of relatives pitch in so no one person spent it all. My in-laws threw in the most and I do wish they could have invested the money for themselves, but they wouldn't hear it.
