My son returned to preschool after being on summer break with me and new baby. I am taking the yr off from teaching to stay home with my daughter. My son has been crying hysterically every morning for 2 weeks because he doesn't want me to leave. He refuses to get out of the car, he screams at me as we walk to his class. I have to pry his hands off me and it doesn't feel good when I leave. As a teacher I KNOW they are fine 5 mins after moms leave. But it's hard to see him feel this way. I know that he wants to stay home with us. He has the same classmates, just new teachers. Any suggestions on how to ease this transition? Or shall I just endure this as it is?

@Teachermama: my LO did this last fall. She made it hell at drop off after having the summer off. All i can say is it gets better but sometimes it gets a bit worse before it gets better.

@Teachermama: No advice but I've been enduring the same thing with my 2 year old who just started preschool 2 days a week last month. Hysterical, koala bear hanging on. SO HARD.
Finally about 4 weeks in and he only looked like he was going to cry when I left this morning, not actual sobbing, so I guess it's getting better.

My son does this, and it gets esp bad when he goes part time in the summer because I think that schedule confuses him. And it gets bad again when he adjusts back to going full time when I go back to work (also a teacher). It makes me feel terrible but he cheers up quickly and his teachers have a nice routine to help him transition. (He gets to keep one of his toy cars with him until AM snack, so his teacher gives him a big hug and then has him show his friends his car.) Last year, drop offs got better after two weeks or so; hopefully this year will too because it's hard.

We went through a period of this this last spring. Right around when DS was 3. Nothing had changed at daycare. I just quickly handed him to his main teacher and she would hug and cuddle him while he screamed. I got out of there as fast as possible. She'd always have him distracted and happy in s few minutes.
I don't know why he did this but after a couple weeks things went back to normal b

I saw a student screaming in the hallway today- "I'm scared." Clinging to his mom. Made me sad. I don't know what I would do if I was in that situation.

@gilmoregirl: I think we may need some kind of coping strategies. My son told me he stopped crying when he got to draw. I think I'll ask about having him draw when I leave.

Give him a task to do when he gets into the school, such as bringing the teacher a sticker, or something like that. It takes the focus away from the drop off.
This tip was given to me when my son was hysterical at drop offs by a much more experienced mother than me, and it worked!

@looch: I love that idea. Easing the transition to the teacher's hands in a positive way. Right now it's screaming and the teacher has to hold on to him so he doesn't chase after me.
