I took a week of vacation pay before my EDD benefits kicked in. The rest of my leave was unpaid by my employer.

I get 3 months paid and 2 unpaid. I can apply any unused vacation time to the beginning or end of my leave (which will start the day I go into labor).

I had 6 weeks of short term disability, and 1 week paid 'sick leave'. After that they starting balancing vacation days with unpaid days to make sure I didn't owe any money (because of paycheck deductions for insurance etc). I couldn't afford to use up a single vacation hour (have way too much going on this year), so I was only able to take 7 weeks

@Pirouette: Nope, you're not misinterpreting! The only good thing about my job (that I'm leaving!) is our sick and vacation time: 5 years and up you get 60 sick days. We get 20 vacation days a year and you can carry over 10 from the previous year, so I had 30/6 weeks.

I was required to take all of my vacation time and they gave us a week as a gift, and the rest was 100% unpaid. We also do not have the option of short term disability.

@Pirouette: I've been taking unpaid days off since being back. My company's PTO goes July 1 - June 30. I used a week of PTO, then got my STD, then took 6 more weeks of PTO. I stayed home for 13 weeks and the ones that were not covered by PTO or STD were unpaid.

I have been back to work since September 2012 and I have taken unpaid days when I needed to take time off (aka: when my daycare kid got sick and then got me sick....)

I am taking six weeks STD, but the first week I have to use my 5 sick days. I get paid full pay for those 6 weeks since I have been with the company for 5 years. I then have to take my three weeks of vacation during FMLA time and the last three weeks are unpaid.

100% unpaid here for 'maternity leave', but I get 6 weeks of short-term disability at 50%.

My organization isn't required to participate in FMLA (not enough employees), but I am allowed to take 12 weeks unpaid, and I have to use all my vacation and any sick days I have left. So I will have at least two weeks paid, and the other ten will be unpaid. My mat. leave will end on Jan. 1, so I will have vacation/sick time for next year if LO/myself are sick.

I just went through this process and am still confused by it. I had six weeks of disability, four of which were paid at 60% of my salary. After that I had another six weeks through FMLA, but I had to use my accrued PTO to cover it. I had not quite enough, so there are three days or so at the end that I'm not being paid for. If I hadn't had that much PTO, I wouldn't have been paid for that time at all.

Ours is covered by FMLA and STD, I guess?

Depending on how long you've worked here... You take accrued sick/vacation first. Then anywhere from 5-7 weeks at 2/3 pay and another 5-7 weeks at 1/2 pay. Total is 12 weeks though.

Oh I thought I knew the answer to this but I guess I don't. I know that we get 6-8 weeks maternity leave depending on the type of birth that I thought was paid 100% but now I'm unsure. On top of that you can take the 6 weeks of FMLA which is unpaid, but you can only be out a total of 3 months consecutively so even if you get a c-section and have 8 weeks of maternity, the total you can be out on FMLA after that is 4 weeks.

That doesnt' factor in if you go on STD or LTD which are both options as well. One female in my office was out on LTD for a full year when she had her son before they were finally able to terminate her. She was clearly not planning on coming back at all but just collecting a paycheck for as long as possible so I know they coudln't wait to can her for good.

I took the 12 weeks I was entitled to under FMLA. My employer doesn't offer STD or separate maternity leave pay. I was required to use all my sick time (I had 5 weeks) and most of my vacation time (I would have been able to hold over 5 days of vacation if I had wanted to, but chose to use it all, I had 3.5 weeks). So in total I got paid for 8.5 weeks and took 3.5 weeks unpaid. At the start of this calendar year, my employer added 4 weeks paid maternity leave to their policy So next baby, I'll get 4 weeks paid at 100%, be able to use sick leave until 6 weeks total, and vacation for the rest of the time. I should only have to take a week or so unpaid!

I also have no accrued PTO. At my old job I was allowed to roll over year after year, so after being there 7 years and not taking hardly any sick time, I had 4 *months* of sick time accrued. Now I am only allowed to rollover 40 HOURS Jan 1st so will have 5 days of PTO accrued by May when I have the baby (cause we took a vacation in February). So my entire leave will be unpaid save for 1 week.

I didn't read all of the responses, but here's what my company did.

My old job required that, if we wanted to any sort of compensation while on leave, we had to use all of our vacation time. If we had any short term disability insurance, we would start receiving that money (60% of my salary) after the vacation time was used up. Since my company gave us 20 days of sick time, I used all of that, but I couldn't use any vacation because I had my daughter in January and didn't have any accrued.

But, DH and I saved up as much money as we could prior to have DD, so that it wouldn't affect us too much when I didn't have income for 4 weeks.
