...from someone other than a dealership, what payment method did you use/accept? Cash? Cashier's check?
If you used a cashier's check, did you meet the buyer/seller at the bank that issued the cashier's check so the seller could see the transaction?

We met at the seller's bank so he could deposit the cashier's check right away (it wasn't the same as our bank). He was also in the middle of moving, so I think it was more for his convenience than because he thought we might try anything shady, though.

The buyer and I both banked at the same CU so we met there and I had to sign some paperwork for the CU to sign the title over to them (since the buyer was getting an auto loan).

both times we've sold used cars, we accepted cash only and met in a public place. cars were $10K and $5K ish!

I've sold and bought used vehicles; I bought one and paid with a personal check (We had the seller call our bank to verify funds); when I sold the same car a few years later I accepted cash.

DH just sold his truck on Craigslist for 11k and we required cash. We went straight to the bank to deposit it after they closed the deal.

I voted cash but I've done both - have bought and sold a car with cash, and have also bought a car using a bankers draft (which I assume is similar to a cashiers check) - they didn't come to my bank. These were all transactions below £4k though, which I don't think is anywhere near $10k.

We've done both. We've only paid with cash when we bought, but my husband has gone to the bank with a buyer to make sure it's legit.

We paid with a cashiers check and did not meet at a bank, but I did bring a copy of my loan paper work since that was how we paid for the vehicle. I sold my junky car at the same time for cash, but only for $1,000.

We met at the bank and had the money directly transferred from our acount to theirs. we had the same bank. we have only sold cars for cash, but none have been sold for more than $1000 I don't think.
