So I think we're going to be scheduling my retrieval here pretty soon. I am a little stressed because it's looking like my retrieval will be either Sunday or Monday. Sunday is good, because my husband will have the day off; Monday is bad because - although he can get a late IN to work - my husband's job is not the kind where you can just leave or take the day off. (He does lighting for TV gigs.) Too much to explain, but he really can't take the day off, and that's just how it is.
So my question is... how bad is it after the retrieval? Did you guys' doctors require release to a person, or could you have potentially taken a cab home?
And let's all hope that retrieval is scheduled for Sunday.

@ShayNanigans: Sort of randomly jumping into this board...hope that's okay! I was in the same boat and was FIIIIINE after the retrieval. It was days 2-5 when I got really bloated and hurt, but even then, I was still able to work, etc. GL!

@ShayNanigans: My dr said someone had to be there to drive me home, so I'm not sure if a cab would have sufficed. But I live in a town where cabs/public transportation isn't common. I would have been fine on my own except for the drive home. I think I slept the rest of the day. (The procedure isn't that exhausting, but all the emotional stuff leading up to that point had just drained me!) good luck with your retrieval!

@ShayNanigans: I agree that I would not have been able to drive myself home. My RE is fine with having patients take a cab home. When I was there for my transfer the girl in the bed next to me was calling a cab company to come get her. Just as long as you have a ride home you will be fine. Once you get home you just sleep all day.

@ShayNanigans: we were required to have a person there to bring me home and stay with me overnight. I hope it gets scheduled for Sunday so you don't have to worry about it!
ETA: I also just slept all day from the anesthesia, but I felt ok otherwise.

@bluestriped bee: Glad you like your coordinator and the ball is rolling with testing. Stims will be here before you know it!

@thisisme: Yaaaayyyy for 9 eggs! Great job
And the PIO shots are totally totally worth it. Not gonna lie, they suck in the moment. And I'm still sore and haven't done one in almost 2 weeks. (Not trying to scare, I just know I appreciated the full disclosure going into it. I've posted about it a few times, I can dig those up if you want).
But if it helps with a sticky pregnancy, it is all worth it. I promise

@ShayNanigans: Same as most...I physically felt fine right after, just tired. My RE said I had to have someone with me. I do live in NYC but I didn't ask about a cab. Fortunately my husbands job is super flexible so he took the day off and waited on me Not necessary but still fun
GOOD LUCK!!!

@ShayNanigans: It's different for everyone of course, but I was completely fine after we got home from both our retrievals. It was a bit painful going over bumps in the car, but otherwise I was not in much pain at all, and was pretty clear-headed for the rest of the day. My clinic requires the person taking you home to be a person known to you, and they must be there when you arrive and stay during the whole procedure, so a cab wouldn't have been ok with mine.

@ShayNanigans: good luck!!! To look on the bright side, that means if you make it to a 5-day blastocyst transfer, that will be on Friday or Saturday, so you'll have free weekend day or two to relax after the transfer (if you work M-F that is).

@thisisme: Great news on the 9 eggs and good luck for that phone call tomorrow! The PIO shots were not too bad for me- maybe you'll get lucky like I was and they won't be too terrible for you!

@thisisme: congrats! Hope u get a fantastic fertilization report! Pio isn't so bad once u get used to it. And of course, totally worth it when u have your baby at the end of it.
@ShayNanigans: I honestly can't remember if I needed someone to drive me home. I know my mom was with me for the transfer.... My hubby may or may not have driven me home, sorry, no help, I know. I want to say I was fine and probably could have driven home. But crossing fingers it's on Sunday and u won't have to worry about it.

So glad... we are now scheduled for retrieval on Sunday, so my husband can stay through, and drive us home. Excited and nervous - I am happy the stim part is over!

I apologize for all the questions... clearly I am new to this. Did many/any of you do a trial transfer ahead of actual transfer day?

@ShayNanigans: Yay, glad your retrieval will fall on Sunday so your husband can be with you the whole time! I did a mock embryo transfer prior to starting IVF so my RE could get a good feel for the "lay of the land." I had not done IUI with him prior to starting IVF so I think he wanted to see if there was anything tricky about my cervix. My sister did several IUIs with her RE so he didn't find it necessary to do a mock transfer because he was more familiar with all of her bits, haha.

@ShayNanigans: My RE did a mock transfer right after the egg retrieval when I was sedated.

**Apologies for blowing up this thread**
In a joke that only you guys may understand... now that I am done with stims, I now have leftover Follistim in my fridge, and boxes of Menopur on my kitchen counter. Sad panda - I bought too much!
My body ended up needing only tiny doses (150 of each, then down to 100) which... how could I have known!? And I even thought I was doing well, because I bought less than what my doctor prescribed. Who knew I should have bought MUCH less!
(sigh)
Oh, well.

@ShayNanigans: we still have meds in the refrigerator too. And a whole bunch of syringes and alcohol swabs left over too. For some reason I feel superstitious about getting rid of it?

@ShayNanigans: we did a trial transfer during the BCP weeks of our first ivf cycle.

@ShayNanigans: Will your pharmacy take back any meds? One of mine will take back unopened meds bought from them, not sure if it applies only to unrefrigerated meds. I ordered way too many vials for my first cycle (my nurse didn't give me advice to only order limited amounts at a time, so I filled the whole prescription and ended up buying $2000 I didn't use!). At least it made the second fresh cycle feel "cheaper" since I already had a head start on the purchases!

@ShayNanigans: I did not do a trial transfer for my ivf cycle. Did you do your trigger shot tonight? Good luck on Sunday!

We had our retrieval yesterday, and it wasn't too bad! I'm sore today, but not horrible.
12 retrieved, 8 fertilized, 6 are live and in charge today. It looks like we'll definitely make it to transfer, but I am crossing my fingers that we'll have leftovers to freeze. This is the last cycle our insurance will pay for so... if there are no leftovers, that will scare me a bit!
Thank you everyone for your tips and advice - it was invaluable!

@ShayNanigans: great update! Are you planning on transferring 1 or 2?
cherry / 245 posts
@Shutterbug: I think we're going to do two! It has been so tough to get pregnant + the fact that we want two kids = transferring two (if our RE agrees.)

@ShayNanigans: For for 6 growing embies. are you doing a 3 day or a 5 day transfer?
honeydew / 7463 posts
@ShayNanigans: Congrats on 6 embies! And I think transferring two is a good call. Keep us updated on transfer day!

Congrats on the great fert report! Can't wait to hear when you decide to transfer!

@ShayNanigans: Yay!!! Congrats on the 6 embies. When do you transfer?

Pretty good! We just got back from our transfer and I'm starting 2 days of bed rest. We transferred 1 embryo and froze 4. Hopefully that was the right choice for us!

@ShayNanigans: awesome news! When do you transfer? Are you doing the PIO shots too? (I need someone to commiserate with!)
cherry / 245 posts
@thisisme: Wishing you good luck!!! And so far, I have not had to go on the PIO shots; just Endometrin for now. So glad you had embryos to freeze!
My doctor just called. Our six embryos are all still alive and growing, so I am glad about that. We'll be doing a 5-day transfer on Friday!

@thisisme: Congrats on your transfer! Wishing you lots of sticky vibes! 4 frozen embryos is awesome!
@ShayNanigans: Great news about your 5 day transfer! Glad your 6 are doing well!

@twodoghouse: Is it weird that I don't feel anything at all? Transfer was totally painless!
honeydew / 7230 posts
@thisisme: That's great! My transfer was painful because I had to have a very full bladder and there were two nurses pushing on my abdomen. But about halfway through the valium kicked in (I don't think I took it early enough) and then I was loopy the whole rest of the day. I can't remember any other pain or discomfort once the valium wore off!
apricot / 305 posts
@twodoghouse: I took a Valium an hour before, and I was fine. I'm really glad I haven't felt too loopy! My bladder was full, but I'm so used to holding it all day teaching that it wasn't too bad!
