@bluestriped bee: oof, I'm sorry! IVF definitely seems like an exercise in patience sometimes. I hope you like the new doctor!

Had my first monitoring appointment today. Things seem to be progressing. After three nights of stims, I've got 9 follicles cooking between 10-17. I didn't really expect them to grow so fast.

@ShayNanigans: That is fast! Are they going to have you take Ganirelix?

  3. ShayNanigans

    cherry / 245 posts

@spaniellove: Yes - I haven't received a follow-up call yet, but I have to assume the Ganirelix will start soon. I was kind of hoping for 15, but 9 is not bad at all.

@ShayNanigans: I bet your 9 are great quality!

@bluestriped bee: I'm so sorry about this delay to get started.. I was so beyond ready after our three failed IUIs that I would've diiiiiieeeeed of impatience with that. Can you tell your current practice that you're thinking of leaving due to the delay? Can they put you on the wait list if anyone cancels an appt? Or can you ask for a phone consultation instead, if that would be any quicker?

ok you ladies weren't kidding about that ganirelix shot. Right at the point of injection, I was all "this isn't so bad!"

Then I about fell over from the burning.

My husband made a remark about how I would have a hard time being diabetic, since I am not really enjoying all these shots. He got some major side-eye on that one.

@ShayNanigans: haha I was exactly the same way for the ganirelix! Just a warning, the generic HCG burns too. I did Ovidrel for my IUIs and that was fine, but the Novarel... ouch!

@thisisme: how's it going? Almost egg retrieval time!!

  9. ShayNanigans

    cherry / 245 posts

@Shutterbug: Oh man - yeah, the Ovidrel was no problem. Somehow, I spaced when doing the med order. The generic costs the same as Ovidrel for me - I should have just gotten the Ovidrel!

@ShayNanigans: 9 so far is a great number!!! All through my monitoring they only saw 9 but on egg retrieval day they were able to get 15. You just never know what can be hiding in there!

@ShayNanigans: @spaniellove: @momazon: So the nurse (that I'm not particular fond of) called me today. She said we can do another IUI or start the diagnostic tests for the IVF before the Dr comes back in office. (Oh, yeah, my dr just gave birth so she is on mat leave.)

My nurse said that we can get the diagnostic tests required to start IVF and if everything looks normal, we can start the bcp pills in March before the dr comes back. So maybe IVF will start in April!!

Oh, if I go to IVF with my current dr, I will no longer have to speak to my current nurse. I will now be talking to my dr's IVF coordinator. That makes me feel much better.

So it looks like my timelines will be moving up if I stay with my dr and office.

So would you stay or would you still look at other clinics? I think knowing I don't have to work with this nurse again makes me feel better. I'm still with the same dr. I don't have anything against her and her medical experience. It's just the fact that she's hard to get appointments with her because she is always away.

I'm leaning towards staying with my clinic now that my IVF timelines are moving up.

@bluestriped bee: That's wonderful to hear that they can do that for you in the meantime! I don't think it hurts to do the testing since you'll need that no matter what. You could always get a consult somewhere else while you're doing that because IVF is a big financial/physical/emotional investment and it's good to get multiple opinions on your treatment. It would have been nice if they'd scheduled a face-to-face with any doctor or an IVF coordinator before starting this process because it shouldn't be done over the phone.

Update: IVF coordinator called me. Today is a perfect day for me to come in for my Day 3 bloodwork, ultrasound, virology testing and saline infused sonogram.

Then DH will need to come in for blood work and a sperm analysis sometime this week!

After that, we will have all of our testing done. All I can hope is that all the results are normal and I should be able to start bcp and maybe start buying my meds once they give me a list.

@spaniellove: Oh, good idea! I'll keep the appointment with the other clinic then.

    Thanks!!

@bluestriped bee: That would be awesome! And if not maybe you can schedule a meeting so he/she can go over the process with you. That's what we did at the end of our IUI - she did a powerpoint for us, went over all our stats, meds, etc, talked about injections.

  19. BSB

hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts

@spaniellove: The only thing I'm worried about is the IVF coordinator wouldn't be able to tell me my exact process because the Dr will have to see my results first. Maybe after the dr reviews my upcoming tests, I can come in and have the IVF coordinator explain my process.

@littlek: @Shutterbug: Thanks! Today is definitely a better day! I was so close to crying yesterday. It was a really emotional day yesterday for me with it hitting me that the IUI failed and IVF was next.

@spaniellove: We did already have a inital IVF talk with my dr and IVF financial person and she went through the costs already. I think it was last month or two months ago.

    @twodoghouse: Thanks!

@spaniellove: So the IVF coordinator just called me back to say that I won't be coming in for the saline infused sonogram but I still need to come in for bloodwork. (The sonogram needs to happen after day 5 after I'm done with AF.) Also, that she would like to speak to me about the process. Woohoo! You definitely know the process! Thank you! I'm excited about meeting her today!

Oh goodness, 14 larger follicles after 4 days of stims, and my estrogen is over 800. Slow down, body!!! I hope I'm not headed to overstimulation land.

    grapefruit / 4703 posts

@ShayNanigans: oh my! I think my estrogen peaked at about 800. Did they say anything about when your ER will be?

  27. ShayNanigans

    cherry / 245 posts

@Shutterbug: Not til Sunday! I am drinking Gatorade and salty snacks. They are dialing down my Follistim starting tonight. Hopefully, my estrogen calms down. I am getting a vision of my menopausal future though - with all these hormone-induced hot flashes!

@ShayNanigans: exciting!! You'll be fine. Also get a heating pad (for after the ER) if you don't already have one. I thought my hot water bottle would suffice, but the weight of it on my abdomen was too much. I made DH go buy me a heating pad and it was basically an extension of my body for the next two days, haha.

@ShayNanigans: @Shutterbug: I guess I'm super lucky with how I react to the Ganirelix... it's just a tad itchy for a few minutes afterwards. I think the menopur going in is much, much worse!

@bluestriped bee: I'm so glad things are moving along for you. It always helps to know you have a couple of options on the table!

@Shutterbug: I had my last monitoring appointment this morning. The doctor said my follicles look "fabulous!" We're triggering tonight at 9:45 for an ER Thurs. morning!

Has anyone used luprolide to trigger? I'm so happy it's another subcutaneous shot!

@bluestriped bee: That's great that you can get started with a lot of the additional testing needed while you wait! My clinic must work a bit differently-- we learned all about IVF and IUI and the financial commitments and required testing for both when we went in for our initial consultation. By the time of our last IUI, I'd had the time to ask all my crazy questions in advance. Did you have to do Day 3 testing and SA and HSG and infectious disease bloodwork before starting with your IUIs?

  32. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@thisisme: Haven't used Lupron as a trigger (only as a booster during the LP) but at least you won't have extra HCG in your system so you can test whenever you want! You are so close to retrieval!

  33. momazon

    kiwi / 613 posts

@thisisme: I haven't taken it as a trigger, but did take it for 10-ish days this cycle pre-stims. It gave me low-grade headaches all day-- hope it's not too rough for you! Good luck!!!

@momazon: Oh, when we met our RE, we just focused on IUIs. Back then, I didn't think I would ever be able to afford IVF. Boy, how things have changed. Also, my RE still says today that the IUIs should have worked. They don't know why all 3 has failed. So I don't think any of us thought IVF would be necessary.

As for tests, when I started my IUIs last year, yeah, we had to do day 3 bloodwork, u/s, HSG and SA. Since it's been a while, we had to repeat the tests.

So I had my day 3 bloodwork earlier today and I met my IVF coordinator. I really like her. It was a brief chat but I like her so far.

DH has to do his bloodwork and do the SA, and I have to get my SIS done next week, but it looks like we are a few steps closer to my IVF cycle. Let's hope my results look good and I can start take BCPs.

Just finished egg retrieval. They got 9 eggs! I'm so nervous to hear a fertilization report! And I thought I was getting away without doing PIO shots, but no such luck. We're supposed to start those tonight. Just the thought makes me want to cry! I need some encouragement that they will be worth it!

  37. twodoghouse

@thisisme: Yay for 9 eggs - that is a great number! The PIO shots are terrible, but SO SO SO worth it if it helps you get a sticky baby! Good luck and keep us updated!
