Today is a brag. For the past week LO has been sleeping 12 hours straight, it's been so wonderful! For ages we'd get good long stretches and a 4or5 am feed but she's dropped the feed. I wake up every morning shocked that she's still sleeping and totally engorged, but it's SOOO worth it.

Raaaah. He was doing 7-8 hr stretches which was fab but for the last week he has been waking every 3 hrs. He is 12 wks so in think it was a growth spurt. He did a 4.5 hr stretch last night so I am really hoping we are getting back to normal.
I think we may swaddle wean soon. I'm scared. Is everyone still swaddling? I know @allison swaddle weaned E ! Any advice ?

LO has been finally sleeping better after hitting a horrible sleep regression last week. Back to the usual 1 wake-up, with the occasional 2, and she's still a great napper (one 1 hr, one 3 hour, one 1.5 hour). Last night was bad though, because she had her 3 month shots and was feeling icky all day. Hoping she feels better today!
@oliviaoblivia: That is awesome!!

@oliviaoblivia: awesome! Row had 10+ hours the other night but last night woke up bc I didn't attach the snuza right so it went off at 2. Always sucks when you wake your own baby! Hope she's finding her way to consistently sleep longer!

We usually have a good 7 to 9 hour stretch if we keep on schedule. Still have one wake up usually between 5 and 6. Naps have gotten better too. She loves lounging in her crib when she is tired.
@coacheswife123: Good luck with the swaddle weaning. I think we were lucky cause Abi kinda did it on her own awhile ago cause she would always break out. So we did the gradual arms out and then just wrapped it around her with her legs free. She never liked the sleep sack and now she hates having anything tucked around her.
ETA We have found Abi on her tummy a couple times in the last few days after a nap. It scares the poo outta me!! She sleeps on her side, she will not sleep on her back so I am not sure how to keep her from doing it I am gonna really try hard to get her adjusted to her back to sleep.

@pinkb: I've heard of people attaching a tennis ball to people's backs to keep them from rolling onto it. Maybe that would work on her tummy? No idea if it's safe though. If she can move her head, she's probably fine.
D has been sleeping in 12 hours stretches too, although we do 3 feeds within those 12 hours. He usually wakes for 1 or 2, then we wake him for the other. But he usually goes right back to sleep (not today though). He's sleeping less during the day, but still probably 3 40 minute naps. He's still around 15 hours total.

Ok, here is our swaddle weaning story:
So E started out in one A+A swaddle at night. He started getting his arms out of it, so we went to a double swaddle. Then he started getting out of THAT, so we went to a Halo swaddle. I had to use a Snappi to pin up the bottom so his legs were also swaddled. Only had to do this for a few nights, though. So after his legs were unswaddled, we didn't change anything for several weeks, then he started getting an arm out of the Halo! Somehow, he'd get his left arm out from the bottom of the swaddle part and the swaddle material would be up by his face. No bueno. So I then wrapped the swaddle part tightly around his middle. I didn't do one-arm-out at first, for some reason. I guess I forgot that was an option. Anyway, he did NOT sleep well for several nights. I tried swaddling one arm, but I guess the damage had been done because that didn't improve things so I went back to both arms out. After a week or so, he went back to STTN. A few nights ago, I started not tightening up the swaddle, so it's just loose like a regular sleep sack (we don't have another or I'd just switch him to a regular one). He didn't seem to notice anything was different at all, yay.
Whew. That was long. @coacheswife123: J already has arms out in his swaddle, right? I bet it wouldn't be too hard to wean him if you wanted to.
pear / 1895 posts
We have been REALLY lucky that E has always been a good night sleeper. Apart from the first week home when I had to wake him after 4 hours, he's always slept at least 6 hours for the first leg. I don't put him down until 10pm because he doesn't do the thing where the earlier you put them down, the longer he sleeps. He sleeps the same amount of time, regardless of when he goes down. So I'd rather put him down at 10 than have to wake up at 3am. So he sleeps 10pm to 7 or 8am. Then wakes up, nurses, and goes back to sleep for another hour.
I don't keep up with his naps so I have no idea if he has a pattern or how many hours he gets during the day. Should I be?
GOLD / grapefruit / 4007 posts
@allison: yes ! We always start him with one arm out bad he always gets the other out at some point ! I think we will start putting him down with both arms out soon
pineapple / 12053 posts
@allison: i tried to do one arm out for a nap the other day. i rocked her completely to sleep and when i went to put her down, her arm shot up and she started bawling. i decided to give up on swaddle weaning for now.
pear / 1895 posts
@birdofafeather: Aw, haha. I left this out, but I didn't decide to wean Eli until I noticed that he really likes to sleep with his arms up above his head. I realized then that was probably the reason he was constantly trying to get his arm out of the swaddle.
Also, he's started self-soothing by sucking on his index finger. He wakes up several times a night (I hear him sucking) but goes back to sleep.
Both of these things probably greatly improved our chances of being successful.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I don't swaddle anymore unless he's in the crib (which I put him in for naps occasionally). He always fusses in the morning when he's a little awake if he's swaddled. Without it...he's pretty much fine. I think he'd be ok in the crib too, but I haven't tried it yet. So for now, I'm only using the swaddle when it seems like he needs to be calmed.

Baby A is sleeping from 10pm to 8:30am. It's awesome. Last week she dropped her 5am feed, which was great and sad. Now I leave for work before she wakes up so no cuddle time in the morning. Her naps are suffering at day care, but getting a bit better. In other day care news, baby A has her first cold! Poor thing.
We're still swaddling at night. She hasn't rolled back to front yet. I think we'll work on swaddle weaning when she starts showing signs of that.

L slept through the night twice this week - from 730 pm to 630 am! He usually only wakes up once a night now.
We have not started to swaddle wean yet but I think we will soon. I don't swaddle him for naps. He is doing very well at day care!

So we were gifted a hand-me-down crib and mattress several months before E was born. For some reason I didn't think twice about the mattress, even though I've researched to death every baby product we've bought. I read something today about how it's best to get used baby things because they've already off-gassed, but the one exception is a crib mattress because they apparently get worse with age, toxicity-wise. Sooo... I just ordered a tiny $400 organic mattress. This one: http://www.nooksleep.com/products-16-pebble-pure.html
I kind of feel like a bad mom for letting him sleep on this mattress for almost 3 months! It's like 10 years old

D typically sleeps about 8:30-6, and I have to wake him at 6. On weekends, when I don't have to wake him, he sleeps till 7 or 7:30.
He sleeps in a long sleeve onesie and sleep sack. We went to arms- out swaddle around 5 weeks, because he would get really angry trying to break out of it in the middle of the night. Once we left his arms out, he STTN. I think we switched to the sleep sack swaddle around 8 or 9 weeks when he started moving around so much that his legs came out of the swaddle. And we switched to the regular sleep sack one night because he spit up all over the swaddle sack and we only had that one. He did fine in it, so we stuck with it.
I go back and forth about wanting to start trying to put him down without nursing him to sleep. He doesn't need it - we've put him down a few times just by rocking him (or Hubs gives him a bottle), so part of me is ok with continuing it cuz I know he can fall asleep without it, and I love that quiet time with him.
Just took this thus morning after putting him back down after his first feed.

@oliviaoblivia: we're in the stage of getting a nice long stretch before a 3 or 4am feed--he slept through them twice, so i hope he's moving in the same direction as your LO!
@pinkb: so, so sweet. LO has rolled onto his side a couple of times, but he hasn't mastered it. i actually wish he would roll onto his side or tummy, because i think he sleeps better! you're so good about trying to get her to stay on her back.
grapefruit / 4235 posts
L is busting out of the swaddle on the regular. I was going to start swaddle weaning him last night (1 arm out) but called it off after he woke up at 11 and wouldn't stay down without a full swaddle. Going to try again Thursday.
pineapple / 12793 posts
We never really got into swaddling but I would swaddle her occasionally on nights when she was especially thrashy. She broke out of every swaddle blanket we had and would end up on her belly so we packed them up at around ten weeks.
pineapple / 12053 posts
yeah, R has started to bust out of the miracle blanket in the morning. she has this 30 minute routine where she starts kicking the end of the blanket and stretching until the flaps slide down off her arms and she's free. i video taped it yesterday to show DH because i accused him (jokingly) of freeing her one morning. he got to see it on the monitor this morning too! so she gets out of it on her own in the morning, but will not fall asleep without it. she's not rolling yet, so i'm gonna keep her in it until she proves otherwise.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4007 posts
We swaddle with one arm out! I think we may move to 2 soon.
I think we are finally (knock on wood) over that hellish growth spurt. I think his tummy problems were playing into that too because a growth spurt has never affected him like that in the sleep dept . He slept 9.5 hrs last night. Hoping for another night like that tonight !
pineapple / 12053 posts
Still swaddling but I've been putting one hand out and swaddled close to her mouth and she's been sucking on it for soothing and put herself down for a couple naps drowsy but sucking on her hand. Progress!
grapefruit / 4235 posts
I was swaddle weaning but L's in a growth spurt (that has to be it!) and has a cold so his sleep sucks bigtime. He's been waking 4-5 times a night since Sunday. Shoot me.
pear / 1510 posts
We're still swaddling at night. We never did for naps. She is trying really hard to roll onto her belly during the day, so I'm thinking we need to start swaddling with one arm out to start the weaning process. I'm scared. She slept from 9:30pm-8am last night and I don't wan to break that streak!
honeydew / 7091 posts
DD is 15 weeks, and we're still swaddling! I hadn't even thought about swaddle-weaning until Sunday, when a friend brought it up. I think until I see her start showing signs of rolling onto her stomach while she sleeps I'll leave her in it for now (unless her Dr yells at me at the 4 month appt... haha)
She sleeps from 8:00 - 6:30 during the week (I have to wake her up), and 8:00 - 7:30 on the weekends.
I could probably put her to bed earlier, but I don't really want to... haha. We don't get home til 5:30/6, and I like getting to play with my sweet girl at night!
I was worried that we were probably starting some bad habits of putting her to sleep though... Feed her at 7:30, change her diaper, put on jammies, swaddle, then Dad holds her while we watch TV/I clean the kitchen. She falls asleep in his arms and then we put her down. BUT, the last two nights we put her down completely awake, and she put herself to sleep! Such a good baby

17 weeks and the four month sleep regression has arrived. I was really hoping we'd just skip it. Nope! Livy has slept over five hours every night since she came home and 12+ for the past three weeks. Last night she was up twice and instead of sleeping in until 9 like usual, she was up at 6:30. This morning she was literally farting herself awake. DH and I were cracking up.
grapefruit / 4923 posts
@oliviaoblivia: i'm anticipating the regression coming our way in a few weeks. that's hilarious that she was farting herself awake--baby farts are so funny. what do you do when she gets up in the middle of the night?
pineapple / 12793 posts
@edelweiss: groan. Then boob.
Even is she is very awake, a boob calms her enough to go back to sleep. I'm hoping this doesn't change.
nectarine / 2771 posts
@oliviaoblivia: haha I love that!! so funny.
LO has been sleeping 9.5 hours (then eat and sleep for 3 more) consistently for the past two weeks and I think she's close to dropping the last feed. Hoping the 4 month regression doesn't hit us too hard because I'm already used to sleeping like a normal person again!! And we never swaddled her because she hated it so shes been in sleep sacks since she was a newborn.
honeydew / 7091 posts
It took us 3 hours to get her to sleep last night, where it usually only takes a couple minutes... I hope this isn't the beginning of the 4 month sleep regression!
pomelo / 5628 posts
We've been having a lot more trouble getting him to sleep. I would let him stay up if he wasn't fussy... He just to fuss just at bedtime but jow does it occasionally during the day too. His total sleep is about the same, but it's just not happening as easily.
pear / 1895 posts
We had a rough day yesterday that ended in Eli waking up at 11:30 screaming. He has literally never done that. I think he had gas or something, maybe. It stressed me out, though.
@oliviaoblivia: I'm telling myself there's no such thing as the 4 month sleep regression. I refuse to believe in it!
honeydew / 7504 posts
@allison: Aw, that's the worst! Dax has done that, too, a couple times. It's so sad! And scary!
honeydew / 7504 posts
@oliviaoblivia: Dude, baby farts are the best. Dax always looks so surprised and then pleased with himself. Like, "Woah, that came out of me?! Yeah, it did!"
pineapple / 12053 posts
we've been traveling a lot in the last week or so, so Row didn't sleep that well during the day for a couple days.
she's found her hand, so we've been swaddling it up by her face and she sucks on it for comfort and puts herself to sleep for longer naps, PTL! we had an epic 2.5 hour nap yesterday! but THEN she's been waking up two times a night after being pretty consistent with one night waking for a couple weeks. i'm hoping it's just a schedule change that will fix itself after we've been home for a couple days because it looked like she was heading in the longer sleep direction and not less.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4007 posts
@allison: gassy cries are THE WORST. When it happens to J (thank goodness it's rare) he screams bloody murder ! It makes me cry !
GOLD / grapefruit / 4007 posts
Two nights ago we started leaving both arms out of the swaddle and he has done AWESOME ! I'm talking like 9-10 hr stretches ! Please please don't let this be a fluke !
grapefruit / 4923 posts
@coacheswife123: that's awesome!
@allison: around the 6-8 week mark LO had bad gas problems and those cries were horrible. i had forgotten about them until last week when he took in too much air with the bottle and i swear i could feel my brain shaking he was screaming so hard.
@birdofafeather: my LO went back and forth on nighttime feeds before hitting the current state of a nice long stretch, so hopefully her extra night waking was the exception rather than the new rule.
@swurlygurl: did things get better after that night? they certainly keep us on our toes, don't they.
honeydew / 7091 posts
@edelweiss: Thankfully (???) it was just a stomach bug. I got it from her the next day, so I'm pretty sure that's what it was, at least. No vomiting, just really bad stomach pain.
Coming up on 4 months though, getting nervous!! Haha. Lately she's been falling asleep SO hard at night though - like back to the newborn days of no chance of waking her up after she falls asleep. Makes me wonder if she's got some big growing coming up.
