So the husband and i live in an upstairs apartment, we have an a/c unit in the living room, but that's the only room we are aloud to have one, i have a ceiling fan in the dining room and another fan that kinda helps a lil to the living room but does anyone have any tips as to keeping an upstairs apartment cool without using the a/c constantly? the back rooms get so hot because no ac is back there, one thing for sure heats does rise living upstairs! lol

We used to have this problem!! We lived in that kind of apt for 7 years! We got window fans that can go either direction (like you put it in your window and it can blow air into the room from outside or suck air out of the room to outside - I think of it as the fans pot smokers had in the college dorms, if that helps!). During the day we'd suck got air out of the room to hopefully pull cool air from the living room and at night we'd blow air in from outside (assuming it's cool enough at night, wherever you are!)
We also got blackout curtains because I started working nights, and that helped a lot too!! We just got cheapo, ugly white ones at bed bath and beyond, and hung with a tension rod (since we rented and can't put big holes in the walls). You can always hang other curtains in front of them if you want! They are awesome though!
ETA: oh, and we had the A/C and fans on high constantly through the whole summer. Our walls were brick and it would be a miracle if we could get the main area below 80 degrees in the heat of the summer! You can also buy a portable swamp cooler that you fill with water and plug in wherever you want to keep cool. They sell them at Home Depot but they are kinda expensive ($200ish). You could put that just in the bedroom. We did that when it was 100+ degrees somedays.

Use window fans in reverse to draw hot air out. Keep windows and such closed during the day and open at night. Is there any way to close off the living room for particularly hot days? At night open all windows and doors and have ceiling fans going.

@Emsmems: thanks a bunch i will give that a try! im not a big fan of the heat and my husband is in a hot factory all day so by the time he get off work he wants it to be cold up here!

@regberadaisy: thanks i am gonna try the window trick with the fan, sometimes i keep the bedroom and computer room doors shut because they seem to draw in most the the hot air cause no ac back there, it helps a bunch but man by the time u go to get to bed its hot back there! i always put fan in the window at night it works amazing but during the day its tough
