We were kind of in a similar situation- our previous apartment fit a queen much better but we wanted a king down the line. We opted to get a fairly cheap queen, which became a guest bed when we moved and is now our toddlers bed. Then when we moved we splurged on our tempurpedic king size bed and it is amazing. They come with a split box spring which will help with moving. And you could wait on a headboard and frame and just get the box spring and mattress for now. But if it's going to make the bedroom really tight and hard to walk in I'd get a cheaper queen and get the king later.

I voted queen for now. We had a full size bed for four years, and then upgraded to a queen when I was pregnant with DD. It is an amazing change even with the small amount of difference in inches. We can actually sleep without touching each other (which is huge for me when I am pregnant). Our daughter can snuggle in with us and the dog does as well on occasion. Our room comfortably fits the queen bed, a dresser, a couple of bookshelves, and a chaise lounge that I will be using for breastfeeding baby #2. We will be able to fit a pack n play or co-sleeper as well, but wouldn't have room with a king. I would go nuts if my room was super cluttered with furniture or I didn't have everything I needed for night feeding. You can get comfortable, nice looking, and inexpensive temporary furniture at IKEA or something and then switch that bed into a guest room or a child's room down the road when you upgrade to a king.

@QBbride: totally agree. I wouldn't want to have to invest in a mattress twice in such a short period of time.

I wouldn't purchase an used mattress. Vote for king.

I'd just wait until you have moved.
There is zero market for used mattresses and who knows what size bed will fit in your next home.
Most king box springs are two pieces. Mattresses are one piece but can give and squish a bit around corners.

We were in a similar place a few years ago and ended up buying a cheap queen. It ended up being a good thing because when we bought our current house, we quickly discovered that the queen barely fit around the corner and up the stairs to our room, and a king never would have. Granted, we live in an area with very old homes, weird layouts, and small rooms. If you know for sure that you will move to a place that can fit a king, and it wouldn't be too horrible in your current place, I'd go for the king. But for us, I'm glad we went with the queen. As it is, we recently upgraded our mattress and bought a better queen, so even if we move to a bigger place eventually, we'll probably just keep our queen.

I would do queen now and then pass it along to your LO when you move and then upgrade to a King

Can you get a cheap twin set from Ikea or Costco and just stick it up against your existing bed and reuse it for a toddler bed later on? You can bungee the frames together and use one of those mattress gap wedges to unify the beds. Then throw out the full when you move and buy a King.

I would go Queen if space is tight. We have a queen in our guest bedroom and it's kind of tight. I would think for our guests its fine but if I had to navigate that room everyday and deal with a baby, it would drive me nuts.

You could use the queen for a future guest bedroom in the future so it's not a complete waste.

I love my king but we have the space for it. As for size, we had no issues getting it into our house. My BIL bought a king and they had a lot of trouble getting up the stairs and into the back backroom. They had to get a smaller mattress.
