@NovBaby1112: S has the same kind of awake times. super awake in the morning and evening (right when it would be much easier for her to be asleep for breakfast and dinner, but babies just know, right?) and she's been having trouble settling at least once overnight too. she definitely needs to burp after feedings, but she takes a while to get there and can fuss around until it happens. i've been pulling her into bed so she'll settle faster because mama's tired!

@NovBaby1112: her awake time varies day to day. But before bed I try to keep her awake for an hour so she will sleep longer. So last night I had to strip her down so she wouldn't fall asleep before "bedtime" which I like to do between 11-12:30. We have an app which tracks diapers, feeding, and sleep so I know she is doing between 13-17 hours of sleeping per day. I assume extra sleep could be because they are working on going through a little growth spurt.

@Mrs. Pickle: we've been using tommee tippee and DD has taken them no problem. What's the issue for you guys?

  4. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@NovBaby1112: I try to have DD stay up for about 30-60 minutes after she eats throughout the day. Sometimes it doesn't work out (she is just too tired and goes back to sleep, or we are out and she goes back in the stroller which puts her to sleep right away). The one time she slept alll day long, she was up from 9-11:30pm and had trouble settling. Sometimes we have an issue with her settling down in MOTN, but she usually goes to sleep on the boob easily. The bigger issue is she is so loud!! Grunting and sighing and breathing so loudly!!

Ok sounds like I need to really try to keep him awake more after he eats! It's hard at times, he seems so sleepy, but I'd rather him sleep better at night!

@hilsy85: babies nap when they are in the mamaroo. At night, we put DD in the RnP and in a swaddle. DS we put in his crib. Laying flat helped his gas issue earlier. Oh, the white noise machine is on 24/7 in the nursery and we turn on the white noise on the mamaroo when we have to. A few days ago, we put DD in her crib. It was a great two night but the last two nights she's been fussing so we put her back into RnP. Oh, good news! They both slept 5-6 hours a few nights ago. I think it has happened twice so far. Woohoo! That's STTN, right? I know the twins are 2 months but they are 1 week adjusted... So this is good. I can never tell which milestones will be delayed because they were preemies.

Oh, as for DS painful painful gas problem, it went away when we switch to Enfacare which is made by enfamil. It is still the formula used on premature babies. Yeah, so DD uses Similac Neosure and DS is on Enfamil Enfacare. I got a great deal on Amazon, getting samples from the Enfamil rep and I'm buying samples online. Price wise, it's not so bad. I figure out it was $0.25 per once.
Oh, I still think DS has borderline collic. DS and DD are sometimes so different. She sleeps and he fusses. Though, switching her to the crib caused some fussing.

@Mrs. Pickle: yeah, babies are out of newborn clothes now. I was in a bit of denial and kept putting them in newborn clothes that didn't have footies so they still 'fit'. I finally admitted it and they are now in 0-3 and 3 months. I don't have many clothes in the 0-3m besides onesies but we prefer sleepers because it's cold in my house with DH being warmer than us. He always has the fan on and I'm always bundled up.
Oh, yay for going from tummy to back!

Oh, that reminds me, both babies are starting to smile with a purpose like when we kiss their cheeks. It was so random before and it's so great to see them react and respond.

@Charm54: going off your nap routine question... Do any of you have a nighttime routine? Ped mentioned it. We don't give baths every night so I was confused on what our routine would be. I know I give the babies a multi vitamin at night but they don't know that. We have started reading to them at night. I guess I'm just confused on how a nighttime routine is different from a day time routine. They wake every 3-4 hours so I'm not really doing anything different... Other than putting them in their crib instead of mamaroo during the day. Is that enough of a routine?

@hilsy85: I'm still wearing maternity pants. It feels better to be a bit loose over my c-section site. As for tops, I'm wearing looser pre pregnancy tops and most of my maternity tops. The one thing I do need to get is new underwear. My hips are bigger to fit into my pre pregnancy ones. I bought huge throw away ones for post partum bleeding. I do have two pairs of one sized underwear I got from a mommy convention which are super nice. Or I can stock up at Victoria's Secret for mid sized underwear. I guess I just don't know if my hips will stay this way for a while or not.

@Mrs. Goose: I have some Christmas but what I do have is a couple outfits for Thanksgiving. I have 2 outfits each for a one day holiday! Christmas is a holiday I see them wearing red and green clothes all month. So I should get a few more outfits... Or not because i do have enough 0-3 abd 3m clothes after going to a consignment sale a couple weeks ago.

@NovBaby1112: I noticed that they are wide awake at 1-3am, too. I think because they have their night and days mixed up. I think my Ped said to start doing night and day stuff to get them used to it. We use blackout curtains at night. Although, I forget to open them during the day. Oops. I guess I keep remembering that my ped said they don't start remembering and developing habits until 2-3 month mark so that's why I don't think its a big deal. They are definitely changing and adapting so I should start being more consistent.

@hilsy85: I was wondering about when to wake them. They do seem to be super tired after they are fed and can get the longer stretches of sleep in when they are full. But I want to do tummy time, so I should wake them early before they feed... But then again I want them to sleep. Plus, I don't know if they are taking a 3 or a 5 hr nap. 5 hour naps are so nice. To wake or not wake a sleeping baby is the question...

@bluestriped bee: around 730 I start getting her ready for the night...I change her, swaddle tight, and go into her nursery with lights down and lullabies playing on my phone. I give her a bottle and then after 4oz she is drowsy enough that I can put her in her bassinet and she falls asleep for the night.

Naps are much more on the fly...either in the car seat if we're out and about or the mamaroo if we are home . Though she has napped in her bassinet really well all weekend (we are out of town visiting my ILs) so maybe that's something I'll want to try when we get home

    How is everyone doing??

We all survived the flight, they did way better than I had anticipated! DS is smiling up a storm lately, loving it! His witching hour here has been so brutal though- not sure if it's because he's in a new environment and overstimulated with everyone or what, but it's been so rough and long, like 3 hours every night. hopefully this doesn't last too long!

LO and I are doing well. Sorry I've been absent trying to get used to being on baby time! Munchkin is getting so big already and is a pretty even tempered baby, hopefully she stays that way.
Anyone else still spotting? I'm guessing no since I was at the end of the month but it's making me crazy. And I will be so excited to feel 100 percent down below, fingers crossed it's soon.

Hope everyone has wonderful Thanksgiving celebrations! We're braving going to mine and dh's family ones, they're Thursday and Friday so hopefully baby does ok

We're doing well. I have had visitors on days DH is working, so I haven't done double bedtime on my own more than once, which is good. I know the honeymoon period is coming to an end and we'll have to get back to real life soonish, but luckily we have the holidays that come with lots of activities and things to keep a toddler busy. 😃

Starting to try a bedtime with DD instead of just letting her sleep whenever. I put her in the rnp for overnight sleep because she really needs to burp which can take a while, especially in the MOTN and she was still spitting up/not settling in the cosleeper. She still wakes up the same amount(3-4 times), but goes back to sleep faster. I did get her back to sleep from 6-645 by just rocking her instead of feeding her, so I'll try that again tonight if it's been a short time between feedings.
DD1 is obsessed still, like she's a totally new thing every day, so we're working on being gentle and not bothering her when she's sleeping. Overall, it's been good and not the terrifying transition I was fearing. I know the really hard part will be when DD2 is older and has a set bedtime, naps, etc.
@MamaBear87: I'm barely spotting, but some days with more activity, I have more, so I am still wearing panty liners. Looking forward to being done!
Anyone else super leaky? I had this last time with DD1, but I always have a letdown on both sides, so I have to put a burp cloth in my bra on the side I'm not nursing on and constantly wear breast pads because I never know when I'm going to have a let down and soak through my bra/shirt. One super annoying part of BFing for me.

  22. Mrs. Pickle

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts

We're doing good! We were struggling with sleep for a little while, but things are so much better since we borrowed a RNP from friends. DD doesn't want to sleep flat at all so I was spending lots of night rocking her and eventually letting her fall asleep on my chest in bed. She goes down easily in the RNP and sleeps 3.5-4 hours before waking up to eat and then she goes back down easily. We are all much more rested. She's so smiley when she wakes up. I love it.

I'm going to take her grocery shopping by myself for the first time today. I've got a Lillebaby carrier that I'll put her in while I shop. She loves to be worn but I have a hard time getting her in when I'm alone.

She's not screaming in her carseat as much anymore. I'm so grateful for that!

@MamaBear87: I spotted until DD was over 5 weeks old.

@birdofafeather: I'm still leaking a lot. The other day I leaked through my breast pad, nursing tank, and shirt.

We're doing ok. Today is my first day back to work so now I will finally be able to catch up on this thread. DS is only sleeping at the most 2 hours at a time at night and then has a 1-2 period where I try to get him back to sleep, so overall we're both not getting too much sleep. We borrowed a RNP last night so I'm hoping he'll start sleeping a little longer. He napped in it for quite awhile yesterday so I know he likes it better than his crib.

@Mrs. Pickle: We've been having the same sleep issues as you and we actually just borrow a RNP last night. DS does not like sleeping in his crib at all and most nights I just rock in to sleep in our recliner and end up sleeping there. I tried the RNP last night a few times but I was just so exhausted I fell asleep in the recliner with him again.

    @MamaBear87: I think I stopped spotting at 4 weeks.

@NovBaby1112: glad you survived the flight!!! You are a rock star!

@birdofafeather: yep super leaky over here. I always am wearing breast pads! I think it stopped during the day around 15 weeks with LO1? Hoping it's the same this time! But I imagine I'll need them at night for a while.

@renee0106: I hope your first day is going well!

We are doing well. DD is doing really well sleep wise--we got an 8 hour stretch the other night! Otherwise, she usually goes 8:30-2:30/3, and then is up at 5:30/6, when I just pull her into bed. That last hour or so when I sleep with her is my favorite!! And I am sure I have now jinxed it by talking about good sleep.

Honestly our biggest issue have been with LO1, and dealing with a lot of anger and jealousy. We've been listening to Janet Lansbury podcasts, which have helped, and trying some new techniques and I think things are better. We leave go to out of town tomorrow and we will be hosting Thanksgiving this year--I hope it goes well!!

Other than that, my only other hang up is the fact that I am not dropping the pregnancy weight as fast as I had hoped I am still around 8-10lbs above pre preg weight, and my hips are still much wider, as is my ribcage. Which would be fine, except I have nothing to wear except leggings and nursing tanks. Kind of depressing to feel like I"m wearing pajamas all day long. I started working out last week so hopefully that will help jumpstart things.

@MamaBear87: not spotting anymore, but I actually already started my period! So unlucky! I thought last month I maybe started but wasn't sure, and sure enough I got my period again yesterday.

@birdofafeather: same with my LO, obsessed with her baby brother and won't leave him alone! Lol, sometimes I have to hide the baby while he's sleeping so she doesn't smother/wake him up

@renee0106: aww I hope your first day back goes well! And hope DS starts sleeping better, we love our RNP for night sleep.

I wanted to transition DS to crib but he hates being flat on back so we are still using RNP for night. He goes down around 7:30/8 and wakes at 2am and 5:30am for a bottle, but he takes awhile to burp and settle back to sleep.

@NovBaby1112: we are still dealin with the witching hour(s) too. I can't wait for her to grow out grow it - though the smiles help make up for it a bit!!

@birdofafeather: double bedtime isn't as scary as I thought it would be...the house isn't clean or anything, and DD1 might be up later than usual, but we all survive and both girls get down eventually luckily I don't have to do it too often, but when I do its a lot more manageable than I feared it would be

@Mrs. Pickle: I have a hard time with baby wearing too. I have a moby and find it hard to get her in in a comfortable position

@renee0106: hope you had a good first day back!

Things have been rough here. I've been in the ER 3 times in the past week with severe abdominal pain. Last night it was so bad I couldn't breathe, walk...I was crying and begging for drugs - it felt like labour!! They gave me some narcotics and I slept. I just had an ultrasound and now I'm here waiting to find out the results. Dr thinks maybe it's my gall bladder . I would hate to be recovering from surgery with an infant and toddler over the holdiays, but at this point I don't care - I just want to feel better.

Luckily Dd2 is a complete dream (except from 6pm-8pm but I can deal with that). She STTN 9:00pm-7:00am for the past 2 weeks and for that I am so so grateful.

I am also so incredibly grateful for amazing family close by...they have been such a huge help with the girls, especially this week as I've been in and out of the hospital. Hoping to get answers and some sort of treatment soon!

We're doing okay, just tired. She's not as good of a sleeper as her big sister was but she usually does 3-4 hours from 10-1/2 and then is up about every 2 hours from there. Our current plan is to move her into her room after Christmas when she (hopefully) is sleeping more predictably and for longer stretches.

@MamaBear87: I'm still spotting a little bit here and there. It's sporadic so maybe every couple of days? But it's been going on longer than I remember with LO1. I think I'm just having to be so active with LO1, though.

@birdofafeather: I was so leaky last time and this time I hardly ever leak. I think maybe it's because I'm pumping on more of a schedule though?

We're doing ok! I really dried up after having that cold, tried to pump more since my other (more serious) issues seem to be a bit better, but the past couple days, nada. I actually suddenly got a good 1.5 oz (more than usual) my second pump a couple days ago so I thought maybe itd pick up but nope. DH thinks I got that because lo "nursed" a little and slept on my boob (over clothes though) for a good while. I dont feel guilty but a little sad that maybe I would have been ok nursing and didn't, but oh well. I still don't see any signs of the PPD/PPA that I had last time so I'm really REALLY grateful for that. As for sleep we are still at 2-4 hour stretches overnight. DH takes the beginning of the night and I take the early morning hours and get up with my older child. We still have one side of the bassinet elevated because he is still spitting up when flat. I know a rnp would have been helpful but I'm afraid of getting too used to it. We do use the swing a bit though.

Ds is gaining and growing so fast. He's smiling and cooing and I am just so in love! I have to say this is SUCH a different experience than the first time around!

  30. 2littlepumpkins

@Charm54: Hope you get answers soon. I hate being in the ER. Last year I had a lot of stomach things that sent me there and to the doctors a lot. If you do need follow up for whatever it is I highly recommend using a specialist and not your regular doctor. I've found the experience is night and day.

@hilsy85: I've hit a lag in the weight loss too the past few weeks. The past couple days/week I've been eating healthier and drinking a lot of water and I still think I've gained a pound? I've got about 5 before ore pregnancy weight but really Id like to lose ten. Nervous to exercise much because I sometimes still get this weird pain..

@renee0106: Hope you get more sleep soon!

@MamaBear87: I STILL (lo born 10/4) spot a little sometimes. Only the past maybe four days have been pretty much spotting free. It was worse with dd though and I had clotting issues after this birth so I guess I'll take it.

@Mrs. Pickle: good luck with the shopping! I have a ring sling but can't seem to get the hang of it. or ds just doesn't like it? It went ok the very first time but I've tried a few times since and no luck. I'm gonna google that carrier. I guess I could also try the ergo with infant insert that I have from dd.

@NovBaby1112: We've been using the rnp at night since we came home from the hospital and DS sleeps at least 4-5 hour stretches in it. I'm starting too get nervous about transitioning him to laying flat in his crib, but i think it probably needs to happen sooner rather than later.

@Charm54: Good luck! I hope everything goes well and you have a smooth recovery.

DS has been an absolute dream baby. He's so smiley and happy and he has started cooing recently. Makes me melt! He's a great sleeper and is still nursing well too. We're really enjoying this sweet newborn stage and it has really made me realize we are definitely not done having babies. The only struggles we have had are with DS1. Lots of acting out and testing his limits. It has been SO frustrating and I've been relying way too much on TV to keep the tantrums and whining at bay. I'm trying so hard to be patient and understanding since his whole world has been turned upside down with his baby brother's arrival, but good lord he knows how to push every last button! I find myself counting down the minutes until DH comes home in the evenings.

I found some specks of blood in DSs poop today, ugh. No idea what it could be....his pedi said to keep eliminating dairy and soy, and I have probably slipped up while I've been here since I'm not at home to 100% monitor what I'm eating so I just need to be very vigilant.

Wow I missed a lot on this thread!

Question: for those with LOs doing long stretches at night, how much do they sleep during the day?? My little man is 7, almost 8 weeks and I was hoping he'd be doing a little better at night. He does 3 hours in the beginning, did 5 once, then still up after 2 hrs. He is 12 lbs and eats great, so he doesn't *need to be eating so often.

He sleeps two 3+ hour naps during the day. And then maybe a bit more. Is that my issue?

    @Charm54: I hope you're feeling OK!!!

@NovBaby1112: aww, if some dairy/soy snuck in maybe that caused it, sorry mama, I hope he's doing well otherwise on your trip!!!

@2littlepumpkins: @hilsy85: I too have weight to lose, I def feel like I lost it faster with my first. I admit to not eating great though. I was ravenous from nursing but that's starting to taper off, it's going to be impossible to be good At thanksgiving, so maybe after

@hilsy85: I can't believe your little one slept SO long! Wow, so jealous. We're your boobs aching?! Mine did 5 once and I was dying. Ha. Also, feeling like I'm mostly just yelling at big bro because he is not listening, so frustrating. He's doing slightly better though. But there is a clear difference in behavior when holding/feeding the baby vs not.

@BelugaBean: SAME with the nighttime sleep. A little longer to start, then up more often. How's the sleep during the day?? Grr. Ds1 was a better sleeper for me too.

Oh! And any tips for getting LO to nap during day NOT in car/car seat?! Sleep is not our thing obviously.

  40. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@hellobeeboston: so she didn't actually sleep 8 hours, but went 8 hours between feedings--I fed her at 7:30, and then we actually went out that night, she went to sleep at 8 and woke up at 8:45 for about an hour but wouldn't take a bottle. And then went back to sleep for my MIL and didn't wake up til 3:30. I was shocked I thought she'd be up at 1 or something for sure. I was definitely very full but not in too much pain. As for naps, she generally naps for 1.5 hours at a time, and I try to keep her up for an hour at a time (including eating). At home, she naps either in the swing, sometimes in the bassinet if LO1 isn't being too loud, or in the carrier if it's evening and she's fussy.
