Thank you everyone again! Charlie had a good night considering where he was yesterday. His blood pressures came up, glucose is near normal, and they have started to reduce his medications. His kidneys took a big hit and haven't made any urine since he crashed, but the doctors say they should come back with time. Here's hoping for a quiet day.

I feel like we are on the worst roller coaster ride here. Yesterday was quiet, but his kidneys are still not working, so he likely needs dialysis today or tomorrow. Then overnight the doctors noticed he was having seizures. An ultrasound suggests he has an infarction near the back of his brain, so he is getting an MRI now to find out the extent of it. After expecting to only have to worry about his heart at birth, to now have bowel, kidney, and brain problems is incredibly overwhelming. Thank you everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers. My little guy can really use them.

@MrsScallop: I can't even imagine what you are going through. I'll send more good thoughts. What is the underlying heart condition?

@Mrs. Jacks: he has a hypoplastic aortic arch and all four valves have some issues as well, whether they look small or thick, but they haven't said much more about those.

@MrsScallop: ugh, I'm so sorry! You are at a regional children's hospital? Wish I could run down to the CICU and give you a hug! Even though dialysis sucks, it may help Charlie feel a lot better.

@Mrs. Jacks: I am. The dialysis sounds scary as they describe it for such a small guy, but I know it will make him feel better. The brain damage is the scariest part right now. My husband and I think it is due to an air bubble we saw in his central line, but didn't catch in time to get the nurse to do something about it.

@MrsScallop: the air bubble would go to the body not the head (unless there are holes in the heart that would send the air bubble to the brain.)
There are so many complex things going on that I couldn't even begin to tell you what might be causing the seizures, but we often think about poor oxygenation, clots, toxins (build up due to poor liver or kidney function), underlying genetic disorders that are associated with the heart defect, metabolic disorders... The differential is long.
Maybe the imaging will give some clues?
In the meantime, I hope things stabilize and you are able to find a little peace amidst the uncertainty.
