A friend of mine shared a horrific story about a fellow parishner's baby's death. The baby 13-14 months old and was in the basket portion of the shopping cart when he apparently stood up and title the cart backwards. He tilted the cart so much he fell out of it and died a day later in ICU.
How do you keep your immobile babies and mobile babies safe? Have you ever had a near accident?

I wear P and will continue to wear her as long as possible. With G he NEVER sat in the cart part and also sat buckled in the seat part until he preferred to walk on his own. He also has never been allowed to stand on the back end of the cart...... yep I'm the not fun mom but don't care b/c I've heard horror stories of injury & hate for something to happen that could've been prevented.

Strap him in - there are little straps in the basket area. And I never leave him out of my sight or go more than 2 feet away from him while in the stoor (he's mobile, but I don't think he could get out of the basket if he wanted to).

I always strap her in if she is sitting in the kiddo spot, and I usually keep a hand on her if my eyes are looking at the shelves.

That's horrible! The poor parents. I know i fell out of a cart when I was a baby-- my mom was putting the groceries on the belt and apparently I took the opportunity to reach for something and fell out. I don't think they always had buckles back then though. Luckily I was unhurt, just shaken up.

I have become more and more lax about shopping cart safety. We still use the carseat but I have put it on the top a few times now which I know you're not supposed to do, but especially on some smaller carts I just give in. I'll definitely be strapping LO in when she's big enough to sit in the cart itself... And watching closer!
ETA Still, sometimes it just happens. I hope I didn't come off as blaming them. I feel terrible for them, it could happen to anyone.

That is so sad. The poor baby and parents. My LO is immobile (2 months) and I wear him at the store.

Oh my, that is horrific. Thank you for sharing though, I always strap her in but I'm going to keep an extra close eye on my LO in shopping carts from now on.

That story about the grocery boy who bumped the cart when taking it out to the car and that made the 4 month old baby in the car seat fall out and land face down kills me. I hate stories like this.

There is a shopping cart strap you. Can buy for shopping carts that don't have straps. After reading this I think I might purchase them and keep them in my diaper bag

I see babies and children all the time in carts and thought maybe a bump or bruise, but not death. My friend showed me pics of the little boy and he was so cute. So sad for the family.

I keep him buckled in his car seat & in the basket portion. Or I carry him.

I buckle them in and never leave the cart. Typically I wear DD and DS sits in the cart if I'm alone.
Also, I've read some pretty terrible stories of babies who were in their car seats set on the basket of carts. I use to put DS there because I saw so many other moms do it, I figured it was okay. In actuality, it ruins the car seat, making it less effect when it latches into the base and can be pretty dangerous while in the cart too.

This is so sad! We have had a near accident. LO, at 8 months, turned around and stood up in the seat...and she was definitely strapped in. I don't know how she did it, and I only turned away for a second. Since then, I always make sure she's strapped in extra tight and I use the cart cover. For some reason, she's not as likely to try to escape with the cart cover.

Such a sad story. This reminded me of another story where a good friend of mine's friend had left her one year old with her father. He brought the baby to her room and left her on the bed and somehow the baby crawled out of her crib, onto the window and fell out. The baby passed in the NICU.
Even the parents with the best intention can never be too careful. it takes seconds for something unfortunate to happen when it comes to little ones, supervision is a must at all times.
I tell my husband to put our son's crib against a wall with no window for that reason.
