We currently live in the city and use a combination of public transit, Zipcar, and Lyft - no car. But with a baby on the way and Zipcar going downhill in our area, my husband would really like to buy a car. We both have easy commutes via public transit and will not use the car to commute or do daycare dropoffs, at least while at our current jobs. We want it mostly to get out of the city on the weekend and to drive to stuff like parks or doctors appointments that aren't well served by public transit.

Problem is, we have very different thoughts on what sort of car we would like. My husband started the conversation by saying he's always wanted a smart car (what, where am I supposed to sit?) and is insisting he wants the smallest possible car with a backseat. My ideal, on the other hand, would be something like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander (or even the Odyssey, but I won't push things that far :silly:). We don't know what the future holds but ideally would like to have a couple of kids (and haven't given up yet on the idea of three). Plus, it would be nice given what we want to use it for to have extra space for hauling gear or other friends/family. My husband says we can trade it in if we end up having more kids and not everyone will fit in a small car, but that sounds to me like a lot of extra hassle and expense.

Anyone else have a similar difference in preferences and find a good compromise car? Or want to convince me that I'm the crazy one
