DD's teacher wants her to transition to a cot and our of a crib. She will be 17 mo. Next week. The main reason is bc they will be short on cribs with new kids transitioning to her room. This seems early to me...
What age did your LO start using a cot at care?

My daughter isn't turning one until next week and this week at school she started sleeping on a mat on the floor. She is napping better than she ever has at school! I was very concerned but it's been great (only 4 days to observe so far, so take with a grain of salt).

My son's old school switched them to mats when they moved to the toddler room at 1. It went fine, though of course I was worried too. He slept in a crib at home until over 2.

LO switched to a cot over a crib at 14.5 months just before she switched to the toddler room at 15 months.

18 months, as soon as he started. No issues other than a few of the kids ran around at first because they were novel. We didn't switch to a real bed at home til 2.5.

I think it's common to switch around 12 months when they move up to the 1-2 year old room. I think that's how it was with DD; I know for sure she was on a cot when we switched to a new daycare at 14 months old.
It's not really analogous to the crib-to-bed transition at home, if that's your concern. Totally different ballgame. DD didn't switch to an open bed at home until 24 months when she started climbing out of the crib.

They started to transition her to a cot a little before her 1st birthday because that's what they use in the 1+ room

@winter_wonder: 14 months for the same reason. Actually slept better than when he was in the crib because the other kids were on cots and nap rolls so he was like a peer pressure thing!

I forget exactly but some point after a year, and like others have said she actually sleeps better on the mats.

Agree with most here - they transitioned her at 11 month's because it was required at 1 year. I was very apprehensive but she did great - no issues.

LO was 11 months, but daycare should have waited until 13 months when he began walking according to state guidelines. For a little while he rejected the crib at home. Then one night we just didn't give him the option.

@gingerbebe: I hadn't thought about the peer pressure thing to be like the older kids. That could totally work!

My son transitioned right around 13 months and similarly slept better than ever. He was never a good crib napper but similar to others I think the consistency with all kids napping helped him. The transition to one nap was forced and that was a big concern for me, we are now past it and he is napping so well on the cot. I would trust in the childcare providers.

Similar to PPs, mine started on a cot around 11 mos in preparation for moving to the toddler room. I know they had to sit with him and rub his back the first few times, but he got the hang of it quickly. He's still in the crib at home (at 23 mos) and we haven't had issues.

My kids aren't daycare regulars, but we we sent DD2 to back up care a handful of times from 12-24 months, and I was amazed at the teachers' ability to get 5-6 kids of that age sleeping on mats. Never in a million years would she have done it at home, but somehow they managed there like it was NBD!

Well my youngest started part time care but she naps there. She was 20 months when she started and had never slept in anything like it, but she napped quickly and easily on the cot. I got there early enough to see it once and it was so cute!!

I think in our area it's standard when they move into the toddler (one year old) room. At least where I worked that's what I was told...

The transition is done at 2yo and my guy sleeps waaayyy better at daycare than he does at home!

The daycare I worked at had a room for under 1, then 1-2, then 2s, then 3s, etc so it was done at 2.

It's pretty typical to switch around then or even before to cots at daycare. I have worked at places that had 13 month olds all on cots and they do really well. They're very low to the ground and we would just sit beside them and easily be able to either lie beside them with an arm on their back to rub their back or sit there and pat their back to sleep which wasn't really possible with them In a crib. It helped many sleep better!
Unfortunately or fortunately?!-daycare is a totally different world than home and things can be entirely opposite and work great!

Mine doesn't have cots - they have mats on the floor, but they transition around 15-18 months when they switch out of the infant room.

By law in our state they have to have an individual crib until age 1. But literally on her first birthday they moved her to a mat on the floor. She's been doing a 2 hour nap every day.

18 months, when he switched from the infant room to the toddler room. I was really worried about how it would go but it was fine, he adapted no problem. I think it helped that the teachers were really used to dealing with the transition and had no problem sitting by his cot and rubbing his back for a while until he got used to it.

DD started using one as soon as she was moved to the toddler room, around 15 months. Would have been sooner if there had been room when she turned a year old. It's not a big deal.

13 or 14 months? I was terrified (and so were her teachers!) but she immediately went from hardly napping at daycare to taking a good, solid nap. I almost bought a nap mat for home it was so miraculous

As others have said, in our state it was cribs until age 1 and then mats, so when she had her first birthday they told me they wanted to try it soon. I didn't believe them that she would do it and I was very resistant! I think she was 13 or 14 months when they finally went forward and tried it, ha, and she did fine
I actually think mats are a little easier for LOs that like to be soothed to sleep by an adult because it is easier for teachers to rub their backs.
