I am trying to decide which flavor of cake I want to have for LO's first birthday party cake. I am getting her a smash cake and then doing cupcakes for other guests. I will probably do the same flavor for both, but not sure yet. LO1 had a funfetti smash cake and the cupcakes were the same. I'll also need a photo shoot smash cake so I'll need to figure out a flavor for that too. I'm guessing she won't care, they are all yummy

I home made the cake for both of my LOs, I just used my banana bread recipe and turned it into cupcakes with a little frosting.

Her smash cake was a low sugar banana cake with cream cheese frosting. Everyone else got really delicious super chocolatey cupcakes with swiss meringue buttercream :).

For L's cake I made her a banana applesauce cake with whipped cream frosting. She hadn't had any sugar yet, so I didn't want to overwhelm her with sweet.
For everyone else I got a vanilla cake with buttercream frosting from Costco

Ha, I went the easy route non-crunchy route and just used a white cake box mix. I divided it into bowls and added food dye.

The attached picture is the test cake I made a week ago. It was almost perfect--the only change I'll make is whipping the frosting a tiny bit more.

We ordered a chocolate cake with fresh strawberry filling for our guests. LO got a lemon smash cake for our photo shoot. Our photographer recommended a white cake, since red cakes look like blood and chocolate cakes look really messy (poopy?) on camera!

It was lemon and he was soooo not interested! (I thought I must've chosen poorly, but I made DH a chocolate birthday cake 2 months later, and he didn't really eat that one either!)

@Espion: For all of the cake smash shoots I've done, like maybe 1/3 of the kids are actually excited about the cake. Half of them cry. The rest are just bewildered about all the attention and suspicious of anything being suggested to them with so much spectacle

I made an applesauce cake & put greek yogurt icing on it haha. I didn't want to overload her with sweets since she had never had them before. For everyone else we had a big sheet cake that was yellow cake with buttercream.
