I think babies 8 lbs and up qualify as big!

9 and up. Average birth weight in my city is in the high 7s.

9 and up. Maybe even 8 and up for certain people. I had a 6lb baby and would've had a hard time with anything bigger!

8 if its a small person. I was estimated to have a 6lb but had a 7.8lb. Everyone was shocked.
I know a girl who is 4'11" and like 80 lbs and she had a 8.3lb baby and I honestly couldn't believe it. -

@TurtleDoves: agree... for some people I think 8.5+ is big, but most of the time the latter end of 8lbs and 9+ is big to me.

My sister had a 9 lb 10 oz baby for #3 and she said it was HUGE.

C was just over 8 pounds and bigger than I expected, but she still didn't seem that big. But I'm not super small anyway-- if I'd been really petite I guess it would seem bigger.

8 and up. D's was 8 pounds 6 ounces and he didn't seem big to me in size when he was born but felt huge when I was pregnant BC I'm barely five feet tall. So he was def big for my body!!

8 and above. The textbook definition for large for gestational age for a term infant is 8.8 lbs.

9 and up but I think head pr shoulder size is more intimidating. Frankly I've seen babies that are six pounds or lighter cause problems because they have big ol heads and majority of my friends had smooth tear free deliveries with small ponity heades babies over 9.

@stargal: Tor was 8 pounds 7 oz and he was so teeny tiny! I was HUGE when I was pregnant with him now. Funny because I think we both, especially you, have strangely slender babies now.

i'd say 8 and a half and up!

I'd say 8.5+. E was 8lbs 12oz and they kept having to check his blood sugar because he was a "big baby".

I'd say 9 and up. DS was 9lbs 4oz and he looked a lot bigger than all the other babies we saw in the hospital.

I use to think 9+. Then I had a ten pounder. She was twice the size of the baby in the next room over. So ten. Ten is big.

my LO was 8 lbs 8 oz and no one thought he was a big baby! just below 75th percentile according to his well child book. I'm surprised so many here are saying over 8 is big!
ETA and i'm pretty short (barely 5' 3", weighed 130 lbs before getting pregnant)

I think of a baby that is 9 or higher as big.

C was 9lbs 1oz....I wasn't expecting that! I just feel like when someone says 8lbs plus x amount of ounces I think normal, but anything 9lbs+ said out loud I know I jump to "wow, big baby". C was a sumo baby, now she's a string bean

I'd say 8 and up... at least if you're small like me. I'm sure for larger, taller mamas, 8 lbs might not be such a huge deal.
