There doesn't seem to be a consensus on when the second trimester starts (and I'd guess it's the same for the third). Some say 13 weeks, some say 14. So when did you actually call it, and why? I'm leaning towards 14, just because it seems like it divides up 40 weeks better, but I can't decide. I'm 13 weeks today, so I'm sort of there!

14. A trimester is 13 weeks because you finish the 13th week up. 40w/13=3 trimesters because the due date is exactly on week 40. That's my logic.

14. But I don't think anyone really cares what trimester anyone else is in, so go for it and call it now if you want to celebrate the milestone early!

It's so frustrating there's no consistency on this! I say 14 only because it seems the majority of sources say this. Most people it seems nowadays go by weeks rather than trimesters.

Once I had completed the 13th week, I considered myself in the 2nd trimester.

I think at week 13, but I was confused most of that week because half of the things I read said 1st trimester and half said second.
But I like @CupQuakeWalk's logic...that makes a lot of sense!

Development, Gestation, Conception. They give different dates for when the second trimester begins and for when the third trimester begins. Your health care provider might prefer to use the Development method, while another Midwife or Doctor may use the Gestation method.by Development:
This uses actual developmental stages to divide up a pregnancy. From LMP to 12 weeks the embryo develops all the major organs and becomes a fetus. In nursing school we learned the start of your 13th week is second trimester. Then again americanpregnancy.org says it's through the end of the 13th week. Who knows! I think it's more about developmental stages, if I remember correctly.

I told my MIL she couldn't tell anyone until after my first trimester is over, while I count as 13 FULL weeks - so I guess 14. In order to avoid confusion, I told MIL "at 14 weeks, on March 15th, is when my doctor advises its okay to tell people."
