It started with the nurses at the hospital where DD was born, we keep getting asked this as well as "How did you choose that?" from so many people! Honestly, I don't have a good answer. I forget where/when I first heard Lorelei and as for why we chose it... because it fits our German/Czech heritage, but really mostly because we just like the sound of it! I think people are expecting to hear more of a story when they ask this lol.
What is your response to these questions when asked?

Honestly, we had a list of names we liked aesthetically. Many of our favorites were eliminated for various reasons (e.g., in some cases we didn't like the nickname). We got down to a short list of about 4 names, and then the one we chose happened to be the lead contender the week that I went into labor.
His middle name is a family name, so that's easier to explain.

A few people asked me what my LO's name meant and I just said "I don't know!". I remember looking it up once to check it wasn't anything weird, but that's it!

No one has phrased it quite like that but a few have asked if it's a family name. Perhaps their way of saying where did it come from? I tell them that we loved the name & its meaning.

You could always say it is from Gilmore Girls... We love the name for our son but found out that it was two (first and middle) of the main characters in Veronica Mars.
FYI I love the name and it is beautiful.

I've heard that question a couple times, and I just say the cutest little girl was running from her dad in Target when I was in college and he was yelling her name and it stuck with me and I loved it ever since I heard it!

No one asks. lol. Her name is pretty traditional. Some people have asked about her middle (June) and I just say it's DHs grandma's name, which it is.

I love her name!
We always get asked that too, and I don't have a cool story or anything. DH and I both saved it to our lists from a baby name app, discovered we had the name in common on both our lists, and that was that.

Not what you asked, but I love the name Lorelei We actually planned on naming our first daughter Lorelei, but decided on a family name instead. If we have another daughter, though, Lorelei is back on the table!

at least they don't ask you if you named her after gilmore girls! I hate that question "Oh, like princess fiona from shrek?" ummmmmmmmmm no. (I mean i guess yes, technically. but just no).
Those that don't ask that tend to say "Oh.. is that a family name?" and i just say nope!

We have had a lot of people ask if C's name is a family name. I guess because it's sort of old fashioned, but every time someone does I wonder if that's their nice way of asking "why would you name her THAT?" I just say, no we just loved the name.

I get that with DD's name, Quinn. I explain the long an painful process of how we got there. I try to make it just as painful for them as it is for me! Hahaha I always throw in a joke how I hope she's not like the Quinns on tv (glee and Daria)

I say "my husband's Indian" since really they are asking why my babies have non-white name. That wouldn't work in your case though!

We get that question...I think usually it means people don't like the name. I just say that we loved it, or sometimes that it's a family name (BUT more importantly, we love it!).

For what it's worth, I love the name Lorelei. My DS's name is Declan, and I get asked where it came from or if it's a family name. I never thought we picked a weird or unusual name, but I guess it's less common than I thought.

Nobody's really asked the question but it's not surprising since both boys have fairly common, classic, easy to pronounce & spell names.

I thought Lorelei was a pretty well known name! I would never ask where you got it from, any more than "john," that's a nice name! Where on earth did you come up with it!? You could just say, "it mans xyz in old German."

@mamimami: See this is what I thought too! I thought Lorelei was a relatively common and classic name... But not only do I keep getting asked about it, not many people can pronounce or spell it either lol. Maybe it's a regional thing.

My DS has a very unusual name but he shares it with a very famous singer. I hate it when people assume that he is named after him, but I knew what I was getting myself into when we chose the name!

DH and I hate when people ask us this. Our son has a very unusual name. We first heard it years ago, it was the name of the singer of a band we liked. The band came on shuffle while I was pregnant before we knew what we were having and we both said to each other, "that's actually a cool name!" But I don't want to tell people that every time, nor do we want people to think he's named after this person with the same name. Luckily LOs middle name is DHs grandfathers name.

I got that a lot too with my daughter's name (Luna). I usually took it as a polite way of asking "why did you choose that name over something more common"? or they want to know if we named her after one of many fictional characters I just told them our process. Her name seems to be gaining in popularity now, so I don't think I would hear it as much now!

Lorelei came from a Ramona book that Mr. T and Ellie were reading. It was a reject for Ramona and Beatrice's little sister's name. We had zero girl names for a host of reasons, and we just knew that was it. But no one can spell it. Ha ha. I also knew nothing about the Gilmore Girls.
