If I'm by myself, always the left (fastest) lane. But I drive slower when I have the kids in the car and don't drive in the fast lane unless it's empty. I don't like cars pressuring me to drive faster or having them switch lanes to pass me!

I prefer the carpool (or HOV, everywhere else). I feel like there's less crazy lane switching.

Around here you can be ticketed (and it's considered in considerate) to drive in the left lane if you're not passing people on the right. I'm not usually in a hurry so I stay on the right or in the middle.

Middle lane if there are 3 lanes, If there are two I might drive in the right lane unless it's going really slow

@Dandelion: ditto; they can ticket you here for driving in the left lane if you are not passing someone (left is technically a "passing lane", not really a driving all the time lane) though I usually end up stay in the left all the time because I'm passing people all the time haha

Whichever lane seems to be moving at the speed I want to go at (usually 5-7 over the speed limit). I prefer the middle (or next closest to left) lane generally because I hate people speeding up and trying to get around me going 15 over. And also I think the left lane is cop-bait. But if cars in the middle lanes are going slow I'll do the left lane.

@Dandelion: ugh! People around here don't understand that the left lane is for passing. I wish there were signs and ticketing. It's a state law that is not well known. But cops are getting behind these slow drivers to get them to move to the right. Though, I don't think the drivers understood why the cop did it.
Because of the abundance of 'Sunday drivers', I actually prefer the right lane. It's usually the lane that is fastest. Sadly, I do pass on the right, which I never used to do when I lived back east. I have to do it now in Seattle just to get anywhere at a decent rate.
If I wanted to be that person, I would get this. But I won't.

@bluestriped bee: People in the middle lane going below the speed limit make me rage. It happens a lot here too. I also hate trucks in the center lane. You see it a ton on longer stretches of road (when I'm driving up to my parents house about 2 hrs away) where a truck wants to go like, 2mph faster than another truck so they get in the center lane and take like, TEN MINUTES to pass the truck they're trying to pass. Trucks should just hang in the right lane unless they get behind someone super slow. And then pass them quickly.

@Mae: Agh!!! Yes! A long stretch of the interstate was slow this morning because of a friggin semi in the fast lane!
I only get in the fast lane to pass. People here don't really seem to understand the concept of staying to the right & passing on the left.

I always understood that- left lane=passing lane, middle lane=travel lane, right lane=exit lane.
So I travel in the travel lane unless I need to pass the car in front of me or exit.

@bluestriped bee: yes!! I hate when people travel in the passing lane. Cops here will flash their lights to move you and/or ticket.
I also hate when people pass on the right, but sometimes it's necessary.
My high school didn't have drivers ed so my parents sent me to the Massachusetts State Police driving school, haha.. they were pretty serious about the rules of the road!

@rachiecakes: yeah, I think some people think it's okay to go the speed limit while in the passing lane. They think they are policing or slowing down the faster drivers. Uhh, doesn't work like that. It actually increases road rage.
It says in our state law that the left lane is reserved for people passing and going faster than the flow of traffic.
(2) Upon all roadways having two or more lanes for traffic moving in the same direction, all vehicles shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic, except (a) when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, (b) when traveling at a speed greater than the traffic flow, (c) when moving left to allow traffic to merge, or (d) when preparing for a left turn at an intersection, exit, or into a private road or driveway when such left turn is legally permitted. On any such roadway, a vehicle or combination over ten thousand pounds shall be driven only in the right-hand lane except under the conditions enumerated in (a) through (d) of this subsection.
Yup! It actually says its okay to be going faster than the flow of traffic.

To and from work, I always drive in the left lane because that's the only lane that's even remotely close to doing the speed limit. The other lanes are going toooooo slow!!
But if it's not rush hour, then I drive in the middle (if there's 3 lanes) or the right lane (if there are 2 lanes) unless passing.

The middle lane! Unless I'm driving a tricky length of freeway and then I stay I the right lane because I'm scared I'm going to miss my exit to the next freeway.

It drives me crazy when people are just cruising in the passing (left) lane. It also drives me crazy when people are driving slower than regular traffic in the carpool lane...

I pretty much always drive in the left lane. I tend to drive fast and Im' usually going sufficiently fast to stay in the left lane. Plus, there's so much traffic volume here, you can't just reserve the left lane for only passing. If someone wants to go faster than me, I generally move over. Though I do get a bit annoyed by an aggressive driver behind me when I'm already going 80 (speed limit 65).

I drive in the left lane, but I'm usually always passing people. If someone is coming fast behind me I get over though.

Well anymore I just drive in the right lane because I'm only on for an exit or two.
If I'm going more than 2 miles though, I mostly drive in the middle lane. I'm a left-lane convert, so sometimes I try to travel in the left lane, but then I have to remember the actual rules
