Carnival rides in general kind of scare me. To me they seem old, rusted, and hastily put together. My husband really wanted to take our daughter on Ferris wheel and said I was being neurotic. I was okay with her going on kiddie rides and the pretty tame adult rides like teacups. Curious what other people think of carnival rides?

Well, that's good for me to know. I do think that besides the rickety look of the thing, I was also scared about my daughter slipping out. She's a wiggly little two year old and fearless to boot.

I personally wouldn't, I don't trust carnival rides. But, having said that it is probably safer than some of the other options!

You didn't specify what age - I might not let LO on one until she's old enough that I could trust her not to wiggle out of the seat.

I wouldn't at this age, she can't sit still for the life of her. But when she's older, sure. I don't want her to develop a fear of rides because I am scared of her riding them.... Although I totally am scared of her riding them!

I don't like Ferris wheels because I'm afraid of heights and don't like how slow they go, so I would never go on it. I'm fine with roller coasters.
If my LOs wanted to go on one, I would see if DH would go with them.
I am a bit more on the cautious side when it comes to safety and taking risks but accidents can happen at big named amusement parks like Disney and Six Flags. I'm not going to prevent my kids from riding them. Yeah, the worry will come up while they are on the ride... But it will be the same worry that comes up as I board an airplane.
Oh, if the ride looks old, rusty and rickety, I might suggest another ride.

My son loves them. He always wants to go on them at the fairs in the summer. I hate them so he goes with his dad.

@78h2o: DD wasn't tall enough for the Ferris wheel at our fair this year at 2y4m and in the 90th height percentile. I would have gone on with her if she had been tall enough but she would generally sit still where I wouldn't worry about her falling out.

I think she's too young now, and I would be too worried about her falling out, but maybe when she is a bit older, like 4-5.

@birdofafeather: I didn't notice any height restrictions - I sort of wish they would have had them. However, my 2.5 yo is the size of a 4 yo (36#, 39") so she might have been allowed anyway. She probably would have been scared enough to sit still, buy it just made me nervous. I think this was maybe a sketchier looking one than is typical??

Ferris wheels are less concerning to me than some other fair rides (but I wouldn't disallow any of them).

I'd probably allow it. We've already taken lo on a Ferris wheel but not at a carnival.

I'd be pissed if my DH wouldn't "let me" take our child on a carnival ride. I don't think that's fair, you're basically saying you don't trust him to keep her safe/make good choices.
I'm not a huge fan of Ferris wheels but did do the one in Chicago with L when he was 1. Although I'm guessing that's not the kind you're describing since it's mostly enclosed.

@wonderstruck: In all fairness, I don't think it's about his ability to keep her safe. It's about the potential danger of the ride itself, which is beyond anyone's control. Everyone tolerates different levels of risk in their lives.

I'd allow it, but I would definitely keep a close eye on him at all times if he wanted to sit by himself vs in my lap.

Haha, no, I wouldn't allow it unless I rode it first, just to see if there is any kind of restraining system, unless it's one of those fully enclosed type "capsules."
I try to stay away from travelling carnivals though, because I don't trust the breakdown/set up of that equipment. Permanent installations are a different thing.

I tried to find a pic online of the ferris wheel, but all I could find was this cropped one from a local newspaper (Baltimore Sun).
I guess in looking at it, the bar is lower than it appeared from my viewpoint on the ground, which is good... it's probably unlikely she could have slipped out (though they didn't have seat belts). However, from the ground I could clearly see holes in the floor of some of the seat where they had rusted all the way through.
Who knows, maybe this is a little postpartum anxiety (younger daughter is 9w old)? I usually think I am careful but non overly paranoid. I plan to let her go on anything she wants to ride at theme parks as long as she's old enough. @wonderstruck: I see what you are saying and he was a little irritated with me! I didn't tell him he couldn't take her, but I did say that I didn't really want him to because it made me uncomfortable. I think it's fair to discuss things we're worried about and there have been times he's told me he's not comfortable with things I want to do.
