Soooo.... Xander has decided he likes to give Mommy a heart-attack and has been grabbing his swaddle blanket, squirming himself free from it, and bringing it over his head and wrapping it around his face!
These are pretty breathable, right??? Or should I stop even swaddling him in it since he likes to smother himself with it???

Omg!!! Scary! I don't have an answer. I was actually wondering the same thing since she's getting attached to her A+A blanket as a security blanket...

@sslm: Yeah, that's exactly how Xander is! He LOVES his A+A blanket and now has taken to pulling it over his head!!!! I don't know why he's doing that but it freaks me out!

If it freaks you out then don't give him the A+A Blanket. Yes, they're pretty breathable. I've been letting little man sleep with one since about 5 months and he's still living, breathing, running around and giving me heart attacks. But I also believe in bumpers on beds and other not so kosher things.
Little miss has been covered with a loose blanket from the start whenever not swaddled. About a week ago I found her in the morning with the blanket completely covering her head. She was on her tummy, blanket over her head, arms and legs kicking. And you know what? It did freak me out for a second - but I reasoned if she wasn't crying (she was actually cooing) and she was obviously still moving well, she was fine. Of course I took the blanket off her head but I didn't let it bother me. Sometimes she goes to sleep clutching her burp cloth and I'll switch it out for an A+A.
It's just whatever you're comfortable with hon. You know that.

Since LO is not always swaddled when she has a blanket around (like in her RnP, etc) I took my A&A blanket and pushed it up against my face to see how breathable it was. It is! That being said, like @NaturallyCathy: said, it's totally a comfort level thing. It still freaks me out when she manages to hook her hand on it and yank it over her face...

D also loves putting things over his face. What is it with these kids? I bought him an A&A lovey specifically because they're so thin - they might even be thinner than the blankets. I will go in and move it if I notice, but I don't worry so much about it.

Maybe try one of the small security A&A ones. Most likely the big one would be fine, but I know of a LO that got tangled rolling around with a swaddle blanket during a nap & died so that freaks me out.

I was wondering the same thing! C is a swaddle Houdini and sometimes she loosens the a and a blanket enough that its up near her face. It makes me so nervous- though at least she isn't putting it over her head!

my son was doing this too -- he loved to rub his face with the blanket - when we switched to a sleep sack in the crib I got him a small A+A Security Blanket - they're like 10 inch square blankies -and he loves it... and it's too small to be able to smother himself with!

I was going to say yes they're breathable, because I've done the oh-so-scientific test of putting the blanket against my face and I could still breathe...but I may buy a A&A sleeping bag now.

@Bookworm: I did the same thing. I covered my face with the blanket to see if I could breathe and I could. My babies love to sleep with their A&A blankets. They rub it on their face to help them fall asleep.

I stopped using one when she started pulling it towards her face. I'm pretty paranoid and even at 14 months, she only has a stuffed dog in her crib. I would go cold turkey on the swaddle or use one that isn't a blanket.

Thanks for the suggestions about the A&A security blankets!!! I'll have to get one of those and give it to him! I have no idea why he likes the blanket over his face, but he KEEPS DOING IT!!!! So far he hasn't died, so I'm guessing it's still breathable, haha. Babies are so strange.
