My 10 month old tried hummus tonight and he liked it. But it didn't like him. 
He broke out in a rash all around his mouth. We gave him Benadryl and it went away. Not sure what he's allergic to in it. Anyone else's little one have an allergic reaction to hummus?

Did it have pine nuts in it? That can be a common allergy...

@travellingbee: was it store bought? Flavored? What's on the ingredient list? Has he had chickpeas or olive oil before?
My first guess is lemon juice, because I read recently that citrus causes a rash reaction (around mouth and/or in diaper) in babies.
ETA when I make hummus at home for LO I leave out the lemon juice, and just do chickpeas, tahini, olive oil and a little salt.

DS had the same reaction around his mouth after eating hummus. I was freaked out that he was allergic to sesame seeds(the tahini). so I didn't give him any for a couple months and tried again. same thing. I mentioned it to his ped and she didn't seem concerned, and said it's probably just a little rash from the acid. I gave him some tonight and he had no red spots.

My friend is an allergist and I called her. She said it could be the sesame, the chickpeas (which are related to peanuts) or not a true reaction. Only way to know is to get tested. He has a few other issues- eczema and a possible milk sensitivity so I'm a bit worried. I'll call his dr. in the morning I guess.

@cmomma17: never had chick peas but yes olive oil. Never sesame. Nothing else on the ingredients besides garlic and lemon. -
@travellingbee: my guess is the lemon but of course I'm not a doctor or allergist. Do you think you'll get testing? My LO has only ever had one reaction, and it was to banana of all things! We probably won't do testing until after he's 1, we are just avoiding banana for now.

@travellingbee: yes. the only thing that ever gave him these red spots was the hummus.

@travellingbee: I should say, he also had sesame seeds/oil in other foods and never had a reaction. he has sensitive skin though

A child at my LO's preschool has a sesame allergy...hope it's a fluke!

I would definitely recommend testing. They can do a blood test to check for the common allergies. Many kids who have peanut allergies also have sesame and other legume allergies. Hope this isn't the case for your LO, though!

@travellingbee: Elliot got a rash from chickpeas, so it could definitely be that. He got a rash to lentils as well, so I'm paranoid now that he's going to be allergic to peanuts, since the only thing he has reacted to are legumes.

You know what? I gave my LO hummus one time, and I swear the next day he had dry red patches on his cheeks. It's been weeks and he has days on and off where his cheeks stay dry. It could have been something else, but I think it could have been the hummus. I haven't given him any more since.

I am interested to see what your allergist says too. DS loves hummus, its one of the few things he will consistently eat, and it never seemed to be a problem. Then one time I let him feed himself, so it ended up all over his face, and he got red welts anywhere that the hummus was on his skin. He eats it with no noticeable reaction, but has a skin reaction....not really sure what to make of that.
