HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) AKA Tube flushing

I just scheduled my appt for next Thursday.
I heard it can be a bit painful but I'm hoping it's not too bad.
I'm actually excited about it because it increases my risk of pregnancy because it clears everything out.
Anyone have one done?
Anyone get pregnant from it?

Mine was not bad at all. I did take 2 Ibuprofen before hand. Sometimes inserting the catheter can be uncomfortable and the procedure feel a little weird and crampy, but my experience was totally tolerable.

@Mrs Green Grass: Yeah, the doctor told me to take some strong ibuprofen before the procedure. I heard the procedure can be quite painful if my tubes are blocked.

@bluestriped bee: Well hopefully they aren't! Some people experience it as very strong menstrual cramps even if their tubes are not blocked... I hope it goes smoothly for you!

It's kind of good an bad when everything turns out ok because you still don't really know where to go from there... have you done the SA yet?

@Mrs Green Grass: Yeah, the DH had a SA. It came back abnormal in morphology. The dr wanted to check my HSG. If my HSG comes back fine, then she said we could do a float test to get the better sperm and then an IUI.

Yes, it wasn't too bad. I took the Advil before and didn't have problems.

@bluestriped bee: We had low morph too (4%). My levels were pretty normal, but LH and AMH were slightly on the high side.

@Mrs Green Grass: My DH's morphology was 4%, too. I did do blood work in October and my AMH was kinda low for my age (1.35) but they told me it shouldn't affect getting pregnant. I'm really curious to know what my AMH level looks like now.

@bluestriped bee: I had mine back in March and they found a possible blocked right side. I'll be honest, it wasn't a very good experience for me pain-wise, but it was good to get the info and now it is in the past. Of course, I was hoping I would get pregnant right after, but that was not the case. We found out that DH has very low morphology around the same time as my HSG.
Hoping yours goes really well - pain-free and unblocked!

Mine wasn't too bad but I wasn't blocked or anything. I didn't get pregnant that cycle, but that did happen to my cousin's friend.

@bluestriped bee: I had one about a month ago and it was really painful for about 2 minutes. It felt like the strongest cramps I've ever had. It went away really quickly. I didn't have any blockages. Hopefully yours will be quick and painless!

Mine was quite painful, but once it was done I only had a small amount of minor cramping the rest of the day. I had either a spasm or I have a blocked left tube. We went on to do Superovulation IUI which is Clomid followed by Injectible drugs, trigger Shot than IUI. I got pregnant from the first IUI. I had one natural cycle between the HSG and the IUI . Scheduling issues.

@bluestriped bee: I'm actually going in next Thursday morning for an HSG too! I'm nervous about it being painful or that I will get some bad news but hopefully not. Good luck with yours! I hope we both get some good results out of it!

I had one...it's not too bad. I definitely had some uncomfortable cramping during it, but as soon as it was over, it was gone. Just make sure to have a pad with you because you'll most likely leak the dye for a bit.

It wasn't something I'd put under "Hobbies," but it wasn't that bad. It was uncomfortable, like some weird cramping...But nothing drastic. My dr said it increases your pg chances by over 30% in the several months following. I had it in October, got pg in Jan(cp), pg in Feb(cp), and then again in March with this baby that I'm now 14 weeks with....So I was pregnant in the 3rd cycle following the HSG...I'm not sure if the HSG had anything to do with it, but something opened up the floodgates bc we had bfns for 7 months and then bfps for 3 in a row. I STILL can't believe it!

I haven't but my good friend out here was conceived the cycle after her mom had HSG done. They had been trying for 4 years.
I don't know if it hurt.

I had one and it hurt quite bad but it literally lasted for 15 seconds. It's a quick pain. I was almost knocked out from the pain but absolutely felt no discomfort after. Also, did you doctor prescribe an antibiotic for you to take prior? That's the only medication I recall taking.

I've never had one, but I'm an xray tech and do them at work. It really is quite common for ppl to get pregnant soon after bc the contrast clears yours tubes out. So its a double whammy test- diagnostic and therapeutic

I'm sure you'll be fine. You live in the seattle area right? where are you getting yours done? If i don't get my BFP this cycle, i already have it prescheduled for next cycle...

Ok, I'm back. The procedure was really quick but the pain was intense!! It was really really bad cramps, well... cramp for me. (Never experience cramps this bad before. It was like one long (and intense) cramp! I was told that the procedure took 14 seconds but damn, it hurt! (And that was with 800 mg of ibuprofen!) I think I have a high threshold for pain, too. When I'm in pain, I don't scream. I was just really quiet. Didn't say anything. The doctor and the nurse said I did really well and it was really quick for me. They said my tubes looked fine and no blockage.
I've heard that contractions feel like really bad cramps. I seriously don't think I could deal with that pain or worse when I have kids. My plan to give birth without meds is changing. Ugh!
Anyway, they gave me a hospital grade maternity pad and told me that I might spot. (Oh, those maternity pads are nice and long.) TMI warning- I was spotting while getting dressed. Ewww!!!! Stupid me decided to wear white underwear and khaki's today. I don't think I'm leaking that much but I am a little worried and self-conscious, right now.
I'm fine now. I'm happy that my tubes aren't blocked. I certainly don't want to do procedure again. At least not anytime soon. Maybe in a few months when I forget how painful it was.
ETA: I'm having sporadic mild cramps here and there. It's not bad, though.

Yayyy, the bright side is that its all over now and everything looks good. I'm seriously looking forward to your BFP. *Happy Dance*
