I had some bp issues before pregnancy but was not on medication. My bp actually stayed at the high end of normal until the last few weeks of pregnancy when it increased. I was put on partial bed rest and told to drink a lot of fluid and monitor frequently. I was also advised to eat a lot of cucumbers which really does help!
