DS turned a year yesterday. I am ready to wean but he definitely is not. He nurses 4-5 times per day. He can go to sleep without his bedtime nursing session when I am not home but he nurses to sleep for naps and I lay down with him while he naps. I've tried nap training and failed (though willing to try again to get him to nap in his crib).
I know the whole drop one feeding at a time. But I'm just not sure what I'm in for..... Any advice would be great!

Yes, I weaned LO starting at 14.5 months. She just turned 15 months and it has been a week now since she last BF (I caved once for a few minutes, but otherwise it has been almost 2 weeks). She still wants to nurse sometimes, and it's really hard to tell her no. But I really needed to be me again and to have my body back to myself.
I WOH full time, so we were down to just nursing morning and night. For the morning, I just didn't nurse her and had a bottle ready to go. That went pretty smoothly, although I did need DH to help a few times. For the night feed, over Thanksgiving, I had DH put her down for bed so that she wouldn't nurse . . . we did that for 3 days in a row (to establish the pattern). When I took her the next night (DH had to work late), she fussed a little, but went down without nursing. Now she still fusses a little every now and then, but nothing like it was before.

Have you started giving cows milk yet? Part of the process will be to figure out how to transition to a replacement.

@MsLipGloss: thanks! I have just been giving him a cup instead of a bottle because he never really liked bottles. Some of the hard part is that I stay at home. If we are out and about he never really wants to nurse because I never nursed in public. So maybe we just need to be out for a few days haha. DH is good about being able to get DS back to sleep when he goes in. It's just hard for me to get DH to help if it's truly MOTN. He sleeps like a rock. I'm sure he'd be willing to help if I put in the effort to wake him up!
@MamaMoose: we are doing hemp milk due to allergies but so far I've only introduced a cup at snack time. Today when I gave it to him he only wanted to nurse though. He has a cold so I'm thinking that may be the reason. Because most days he takes it fine.

@MamaJ: I'm sure it's tough with you being home. My LO is transitioned completely to whole milk at school. But at home on the weekends she still wants to nurse through out the day instead of just morning and night... We have a bunch of travel coming up with the holidays so it will be nice to be able to nurse her on the plane but once we are back I really want to get her down to morning and night only even on the weekends. I feel your pain.

I am in a similar situation, I sah with lo and he currently nurses 4x a day including before naps. I think I could drop the morning and night sessions, it's the pre nap ones I'm worried about...he also refuses cows milk so I can't replace it with anything either! I really need to nap train but just don't want to face it yet...

@hilsy85: Not that you asked, but, I got the morning and night nursing sessions squared away before I tried to tackle the nap nursing.

@hilsy85: yeah naps are a disaster here and I don't want to nap train. But I'm going to have to.

@hilsy85: Because her nighttime routine was so much more consistent than her nap routine. So, I felt like it was less chaotic to change one part of her normal dinner/bath/boob/bed routine that it was to change pretty much the only consistent part of her nap (the boob). If that makes sense . . .

@MsLipGloss: gotcha...for us, boob is pretty removed fr bed so I feel like if I stuff him at dinner for a few nights he won't miss it. But I could totally be wrong! I am trying to come up with a nap routine but it's pretty much book boob bed.

@MamaJ: I just picked a day and fed him a snack at the time we would've nursed (we were down to 4x a day). He does sign, and I was nervous he was going to "ask" but he didn't. So far so good!
@hilsy85: we dropped our first feed last week without replacing it with any milk, just a snack! we're at morning, before nap, and dinner. hoping to drop before nap by Christmas, we just started giving him a snack, then nursing, and it's (knock on wood) extended his nap by an hour (to 2 hours!).

We weaned at a year and it's hard to say whether or not my LO was 'ready' at that time but it was relatively easy. He never asked to nurse but as soon as he saw boob or I laid him on our nursing pillow he would go to town. I just decided one day to try 'don't offer, don't refuse' and we essentially weaned in 3-4 days. The only time he asked to nurse was when he saw my boob while I was trying on a bathing suit! 
Like @scg00387 suggested, you do not have to replace a nursing session with a drink. Consider them like any other meal/snack (calories are calories, right?) and you can offer food instead. We actually didn't replace any nursing session with a cup of milk but with a small snack instead. I just offered milk with meals.

@hilsy85: were only on one nap so I dropped the kid afternoon nursing by just giving him food instead. The only day nursing now is before his nap but after a snack. Sometimes he falls asleep sometimes not. I plan to keep giving more snack and easing off on nursing. Next week I'm only goin to do one side then hopefully the week after that, no nursing.
