@Mae: Way it is raised yes.
I try not to get hung up on the living conditions of all the other meat I have no problem eating, it doesn't really make sense, but I got hung up on the veal thing as a kid and have just never had it and am not about to start now. I grew up with beef cattle that we didn't actually raise for beef, but have always tried to keep what farm connections I have to get local meat opposed to buying it at the grocery store, the veal thing on local farms bugs me, so I try to stick with what my bubble shows me and buy local when I can for the meat I do eat!

I also don't eat any "diet" foods, especially fake sweeteners. The taste of sucralose, saccharine, etc. is really gross to me. I think if I am going to enjoy an occasional soda I might as well go all in on the calories.

@Mae: I can't eat "body" parts of animals, I could say that's a personal thing because it reminds me I'm eating a living thing. But also it's just gross

There are plenty of things I don't like to eat (eggs!) but very few that I don't eat out of principle. Fake cheese stuff is maybe the closest I come? Although my grandma had a fantastic soup recipe that used a lot of velveeta.... I don't eat at Chik Fil A - does that count?

Oh maaaan.... I love a good cold Diet Coke with my lunch. Y'all are killing me here. I would really, really like to give it up, hopefully I will someday. I know all that artificial sweetener stuff is bad, bad, bad.
We have stopped drinking coffee creamer and just use milk or half & half now, so that's a step in the right direction! LOL

Any mac and cheese that comes out of a box; including Velveeta and other squeeze “cheese”. American cheese; except for like 2x a year when I get an insane craving for a sub with crappy American cheese.
I avoid most diet foods; especially those with artificial sweeteners. Never drink diet soda (rarely drink regular soda).
Factory farmed meat (though I’m sure I eat it via eating out), especially from any farm that has documented abuse (hi, Tyson brand and many suppliers of meat to WalMart!). Animal cruelty isn’t a price I’m willing to pay for cheap meat.
Peas and asparagus out of a can on the principal that those veggies canned are just f’ing nasty and don’t do justice to poor veggie!!!
I also won’t eat liver.
pomelo / 5509 posts
Anything with artificial sweeteners, because of the chemicals, but also because they leave a terrible taste in my mouth!
Also, fast food. Any type. I make a very rare exception (like once a year, max) for Wendy's fries.
ETA: Oh and I don't drink soda, except ginger ale if I am sick.

High fructose corn syrup. It was the one ingredient that I avoided at all cost years ago. It's in everything! I generally avoid a lot of the "bad" stuff like food coloring, artificial sweeteners, fake cheese, and icky preservatives. I limit canned goods unless I know that the cans are BPA free. Lately I've been really turned off by soy being in everything we eat. It's almost impossible to avoid.

Artificial sweeteners and diet foods. I'm also jumping off the "low fat" bandwagon. If it's low fat, they usually make up for flavor elsewhere, like sugar or sodium. Plus, full fat fills you up so you eat less of it. And I rarely drink soda. And I can't stomach veal. I used to eat it until I found out how they "raise" the calves. Since then, it turns my stomach.

I suck at this thread.... I eat artificial sweetener all the time! I love myself a splenda or some stevia...

@cheert16: Same. I tell DH that my autopsy would find that I was half artificial sweetner. Oops.

I have a lot of items I don't eat just because I'm super picky and don't like the taste, but I don't eat any meats beside chicken, turkey, beef, and pork. No duck, veal, deer, etc.
papaya / 10473 posts
No fake cheese stuff, no packaged baking mixes, no food coloring, no instant/convenience foods or frozen meals, no sugar free (unless its naturally sugar free) or fat free foods. Our rule is that if it wasn't available to our great great grandparents, or we can't recognize the ingredients, we don't eat it regularly. We make exceptions here and there, but try to eat 90% this way.

Meat is #1 on my list. I haven't had red meat since I was 13 & started eating chicken again when I was pregnant with Chloe. Now I only eat chicken if it's from the local farm (we only buy it from one place!) and I eat it maybe 5-6x a year. You'll never catch me ordering it out and I pick it off my food (like a pizza).
I won't buy it, touch it, or cook it.

We are pretty strict about the type of food we keep in our house - local, organic, minimally processed, full fat, etc.
But I will eat pretty much anything. When we go over to friends house, I eat what they serve, regardless if it processed, not organic, artificial sweeteners, etc. I'll eat fast food on occasion. We eat "junk" in moderation so I'm not worried about it at all.
I hate eating chicken wings because I hate the feeling of my teeth touching bone.

@twodoghouse: Do you just not like eggs? Or do you object to them for some reason? Also chick fil a counts! I won't eat there either and it has been soooo hard during pregnancy because there is one like 1 mile from our house and I have wanted it so bad. Why does hateful chicken taste so delicious?
@yin: what sorts of surprising things have soy in them? That isn't something i've noticed, but maybe I'm just not paying enough attention.
honeydew / 7917 posts
@Mae: So much! Pretty much anything you buy from the grocery store that is not fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. Actually some meats are injected with a soy water mixture to plump it up. Some items that come to mind include chicken broth, cookies, bread, crackers, spaghetti sauce, meatballs, cereal, frozen garlic, hummus, and vitamins.

Margarine. I prefer real butter. And Chick-fil-A and Papa John's. I'm sure I give money to companies whose beliefs and practices I don't agree with, but it really irritates me when they're vocal about it.
honeydew / 7230 posts
@Mae: I just don't like the way eggs taste or smell or look! I only eat them when they are hidden in baked goods!

I finally thought of one! Civet coffee - Those coffee beans that animals eat and poop out.

Any type of cod fish, salmon, scallops - I'm allergic and would literally die if I ate it unless I had an Epi-Pen on me. I also avoid artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup when I can.

meat/fish, artificial sweetener, hydrogenated fat.
But I drink flammable liquid all the time-booze!

Foie gras. I used to think black pudding was gross until I tried it and then it killed me to admit it but it was tasty.
grapefruit / 4731 posts
Tripe - animal stomach - it's always at dim sum... everyone seems to love it... but my parents never ordered it when I was growing up... and the first time I saw it was in college and all the other Asians thought I was weird for not liking it.

"diet" anything. Give me full sugar any day after having a close family friend die before she even reached 50 as a result of artificial sweetners causing heart complications.
I also won't eat red meat - I'm not a vegetarian. I still eat white meat. My body just won't tolerate red meat because I absorb too much iron.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@Mae: So no alcohol for you either? It's also flammable.
I won't eat potatoes from a box. Why do they exist? Potatoes are so easy to make!

@Grace: lol! good point. Although I'm not sure anything I drink is strong enough to hold a flame...

I don't eat blue food! Food should not be blue!! I guess the only really blue food is blueberries, and I don't like them, so that works out. Haha. But yeah, all candy and sweets that are blue raspberry or whatever blue flavor I won't eat!
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
I can't think of anything aside from our there things like eating bugs.
honeydew / 7589 posts
Never? Pork. Artificial Sweeteners.
Rarely? Meat. Dyes. Margarine. "Cheese Product".
pear / 1609 posts
@mrs. wagon: I don't know why "food should not be blue" made me LOL so much but it did. You have a good point though
Canned meat/fish is the only thing I can think of. It just weirds me out.
bananas / 9227 posts
Artificial sweeteners or diet food. Artificial strawberry flavor in desserts, baked desserts with preserved fruit/jam.
pomelo / 5720 posts
Red meat, fast food, and anything that I know, or can read the label and determine is super high in fat or calories. I also don't eat a lot of things mentioned here because I'm allergic to dairy. I eat more than my fair share of diet and artificial sweeteners though.
