@delight: Thank you! So I pretty much followed this tutorial.
http://www.danslelakehouse.com/2013/04/my-diy-agate-art.html?m=1
Ok, this is going to be a bit rambly....
One difference from the tutorial is that the agate slices I bought didn't have the gold rim, so I had to add that with this pen from Michaels. I had to make quite a few changes to the frame and matting because I bought some frames with matted pictures in them and took them apart to salvage the frame and bought matting and craft paper to cover the backs. If I were to do it all over again, I would just buy the shadow type frames from Michaels or something that have the matting in them already so they are more secure. Let's just say, I hope we don't have an earthquake here.
When you are working with the epoxy, don't move the slices around too much. Know where you want them or you will see some shiny spots once it dries. I would start with the frames and then pick the agate sizes you want. Confession: I bought three sets of these agate slices from Amazon, picked through them and then returned the rest.

Let me know if you have any questions!

@Coral: pardon my ridiculously stupid question...did you replace the glass on top of the Agate? Or is the glass from the picture frame not used here? Its hard for me to tell! I LOVE how yours turned out and place to do this for our Master Bedroom ASAP!!!
clementine / 874 posts
@Mrs D: Not a stupid question at all! It's the same glass that came with it. So, essentially, I bought pictures like this and took them apart (although these would have been better for the project because they are meant for 3D objects and mine is a little wacky because it's meant for flat pictures ) but I got all 3 for 8 bucks, so I am happy.

We're painting a lot of our trim right now, and trying to get as much done before baby arrives as we can.
I also need to start on baby # 2's quilt. I made one for DD so I want to make one for this baby too, but other than ordering fabric, I haven't even started...and I'm 34 weeks!

@Coral: thanks for the links!!! I'm hoping to find ones that don't have the gold anyways! Just doesn't go with my decor. Thanks for the tips. I can't wait todo this project. We painted our dining room a deep blue and putting these in our living room will help tie it all together.
clementine / 874 posts
@delight: of course! The ones I used would be perfect then! I do recommend getting a few more slices than you need so you can pick through them since they vary so much. These are all the ones I ordered (so you get an idea if you get the Amazon one.)

@Coral: Good idea to order extras. I was hoping I'd just find coasters at Home Sense like the girl in your link found!! I'll try to remember to post my finished product here.

@Coral: I just ordered my slices today...similar to the set below but even more variation! Pretty decent price...I found some frames I love at Crate & Barrel - but hoping to find cheaper ones at TJs or JoAnns this week! I cant wait to get the pieces and get started!

@Mrs. Superhero: that is so beautiful!! I love it
@Coral: omg those are gorgeous and now I want to try too!!
I'm not currently DIYing anything but I have a long list of things I want to try haha. We just bought a house so my want list is endless.
I want to try and create an art piece similar to this for the large space above our mantel
A canvas the size I want from Joanns is about $50, but they always have their coupons. I've never tried something like this Haha. But it can't be too hard, right?!
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@Mrs. Pen: That's really cool! I would just do it with masking tape. Paint the whole canvas the gold color, tape off and paint over with your darker color. That's how we did E's nursery wall in a lattice pattern.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@Mrs. Pen: YES! I have done lots of different striped canvases before...its so "easy". Wait for the 50% off coupon...buy Frog Tape (good green painters tape)...spray the approx design with gold spray paint, and the edges. Then Tape the design (once the gold is completely dry), paint the whole thing black (make sure you tape the edges too...) - I'd use a roller....then just remove the tape!
I LOVE this...I totally may steal this idea!!!

@kiddosc: @Mrs D: awesome!! Thanks for the tips- super helpful.
Any idea what type of paint I should get? Spray paint? Acrylic?
clementine / 874 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Thank you! It was actually really easy once I got the inspiration to finish it!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I personally would spray paint - not sure what the brand is but I have gotten gold spray paint at JoAnns (kind of a tappered cap) and I have been impressed. I think I'd roll on the black paint to get a nice smooth finish! I'd probably get a sample of black from HD or something...Behr samples are only $2.99 I think and I think it would cover even a big canvas!

@Mrs D: I love that Etsy set you posted!!
@Coral: Now I can't decide if I want to do the blue agate like you did, or try the pink! That fuchsia color is my favorite ever and it'd be a beautiful color in our dining room... but that blue is gorgeous too.

@Mrs. Pen: What's the color scheme in your dining room
Eta-- these are gorgeous, too
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Coral: yes!! That fuchsia is gorgeous.
Right now we have no color scheme- we just moved in we have oak floors, a wood table, plain oak cabinets (we plan to do navy cabinets on bottom and white on top). Dining room feeds into family room where we have a charcoal couch, black/white striped pillows and pink/navy pillows. Gold accents.
So either the blue or the pink would be gorgeous

@Mrs. Pen: Definitely the fuchsia with gold trim! I love navy + fuchsia!

I am not currently working on anything, but we close on our new house tomorrow so I will have a lot of DIY projects to work on in the near future.
I am planning on painting a lot of the rooms, and refinishing an old table and china cabinet.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Coral: you convinced me- I'm going pink! It'll be the perfect way to incorporate my favorite color into my home without it being too girly.

I love all things Navy and Pink...great choice @Mrs. Pen: and great convincing @Coral: !!!

I just DIY a dinosaur tail. It took a long time!! I'm not naturally crafty but I was determined to make at least one costume for DD.

We're racing to get a lot done before baby #2 arrives at the end of the month. I'm currently finishing a baby quilt for him/her. We've also slowly been painting our ugly, dark trim white, and finished the entry hall, kitchen, DD's room, and the nursery in the past couple months. So sick of paint!

@LemonJack: oh, I've painted trim before and I know the hell that that is...its so worth it though!!!!!

Ladies!!!!! I am so beyond excited! Forever, well since it aired, I have been drooling over this master bedroom (pic 1) from Fixer Upper. Then this morning I found this gem (pic 2) on Craigslist...I cannot wait to get my hands on it!!!

@Mrs D: that's perfect for your inspiration! Can't wait to see what you do with it!
We're nesting around here, since I'm due with LO3 in a few weeks. We're staining a dresser for the nursery this week, and I'm working on another Bucilla felt stocking. I'm contemplating making this mobile too, though I'm a little burned out on felt/sewing with the stocking.

Just finished painting the edges of my agate...found $4 frames at Walmart today that I'm hoping look good!!!

@Mrs D: I want to see your completed after...the inspiration is gorg!
My outsourced DIY water table turned out to be a dud. My dad is correcting his mistakes. He was like I didn't think you would notice.
