If we move, she will go to public school. If we stay in our current home, she will go to private school.
I would love to get her into a magnet but, they are very hard to get into here.

Public all the way! Unless my MIL wants to pay for private school!

My DH and I have talked seriously about homeschooling our kids. As of right now that's what we are planning. If we decide against it they will go to public school. There is an excellent elementary school in our neighborhood.

Ours will go to a private school where I teach. Our tuition goes down 25% every year until we max out at 75% off the tuition. It's a good school.

Probably parochial school for part of their education, though we both believe part should also be public. I went to a terrible public school, and my husband went to a great public high school and a parochial elementary/middle school. I would have loved to have gone to a Catholic school, but on the other hand, cringe at the idea of paying for something we can get for free. But we both think it is important for the type of education we want to give our kid. It will mostly depend on where we are actually living when LO is old enough for school though.
Ironically, for my lobbying job I'm researching why things like school vouchers aren't good ideas. Mainly because we have strong public schools in our state and their aren't any improved outcomes for kids who go to private schools. So for us it's more of a cultural/faith thing than a public schools are bad thing.

@Leialou: Us too. I am looking into HSing for at least preschool, then taking it from there. Our public school system is by lottery, so we won't know where our LO will go to school until the spring of the year that she'll start. It drives me crazy.

Public school, but to a French immersion. The nice thing in my city is that there are no district restrictions.

Public. We chose our town for the amazing schools. We don't have a great option for a girls' private high school in the academic sense, but we do have a fantastic boys' private HS so if we have a son and he is interested, we would consider it.

public for us. We both went to public and thrived. UNless my kids have issues, then we will see.

Public.. I would only consider private if the school district was bad. Luckily our school district is fabulous one of the top in the state.

As long as we stay living abroad, they'll go to a private international school.

They are both going to private school. We have already started kinder apps for DD 1.

Public, we only have one private school in our town and it's catholic and only goes to 8th grade.

Private if we can afford it.
If not, homeschool for the first 5 or 6 years at least. Then revisit.

Public - we have an excellent, highly rated public schools here...

It will greatly depend on where we live. If we're back in our hometown, DS will go to public school. I hope he'll attend the same magnet high school that I attended.

In Sweden, both public and private are free. I think the only ones that aren't covered are boarding schools (and they only have a couple). But those are notoriously known for hazing and are generally considered for only the uber wealthy. DD would go to the public school by our house, it's next to a nature path, and it looks pretty big for a small town school. I'm looking forward to walking her each day.
If we moved to SD, I would be very picky about what school district she'd go to (where we'd move). But even so, I'd consider a top-rated private school if we can afford it.

We are hoping to go the "other" route if LO can get into the local option. We have a large state university in our city and through it there is an educational research school that is K-12 and has amazing resources. It's a lottery system for admission, based on the current demographics of the state but it's considered public (free) and isn't a magnet for any particular subject.
DH and I went to the same middle school (a public k-12 gifted magnet) and had an amazing experience. I left in HS to go to the big public option closer to home while he stayed and though it was a really good school I do have times when I wish I stayed back at the non-traditional option. It was a great learning opportunity in itself though to go to a school with 2500 kids however.

I think it will depend on certain circumstances but I am a huge proponent of public schools, so that is certainly my top choice.

Undecided. We have a good public school down the street so most likely shell go there, but there's still a chance she'll go to Jewish day school or an artsy fartsy charter school.

We have agreed on private school, if we can afford it or get scholarships. I'd love for her to go to the visual/performing arts Magnet school in the city.
DH was private school until 8th grade and I was public my entire education.

Public school for sure. Theres just as many"gifted" kids in public schools.

If we live here we will homeschool for a while, then private. We're actually planning on homeschooling for a few years anyway. If/when we move, they will go to public school.

Public - we live in an excellent school district and pay out the nose for it! We may consider private kindergarten at our current daycare though, because they offer an all day program while our district only does half-day kindergarten.

Public. One reason we bought a house in this neighborhood is because of the schools.
pomegranate / 3604 posts
there are four "public" school boards here...French Catholic, Catholic, French public, English public. French Catholic has the most money & since I have French language rights under our Charter, he'll be going to French Catholic.

Public- like others, the house we bought has good schools in the area, which is why we bought it.
Our kids will be raised Jewish, and the only private options in our area are catholic or a high school that costs more than a year at Stanford to attend. No, thank you, my kid will be just fine at public school.

We'd prefer Catholic/private schools, like the ones we went to, but I'm not sure we can afford it. Probably end up doing public school for the first few years, then switching to parochial schools.

Public. We live in an excellent school district. We'll be saving the money for college!

@blackbird: I agree on saving the money for college!
Public all the way!

Public bc private is expensive!! Plus, the public schools in our neighborhood are highly rated, so bonus!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Undecided - it all depends on where we are in life when the time comes. I could quite possibly be working, but if it's part-time I'm not opposed at all to home-schooling.
Otherwise we'll probably start with montessori and see where we go from there.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
We purposefully chose our suburb because of the excellent schools, so public it is!
persimmon / 1388 posts
Public.
My parents sent me to private Catholic schools through high school and forked out THOUSANDS. When I hit college, they contributed nada. I really wish they would have saved that $ they used for K-12 and sent me to public school so that I could have used that $ for college!!
